Subject: Ironman bad dream

I'm training for my first ironman and last night, I had a pretty bad dream.  This dream was very real.  I remember waking up the morning of the race in the hotel later than I wanted to and had to rush over to the race start.  When I got there, everyone had the suits on and were getting into the water to race.  I wasn't even registered or numbered or anything.  I gave my bike and bags to someone, not even sure who and started putting on my wetsuit when I heard the gun go off.  By the time I got into the water, all the swimmers were out of site.  I remember jumping in the water and started swimming.  I swam and swam and eventually couldn't see anyone.  I ended up getting lost in the lake.  I was in the middle of the lake treading water and couldn't see any boueys, people, nothing.  I guess it was foggy out.. I started to panic and got really short of breath.  I ended up swimming towards the noise of the crowd.  I remember making it back to the swim start and was told that I was disqualified.  It was an terrible feeling.  Thanks god I woke up this morning!  I was so relieved.

This dream was so lifelike that I had to tell someone.  My wife thinks i'm nuts and i'm starting to believe her.  Please tell me this has happened to someone else out there....

Yes --- Had a few bad dreams before my first ironman distance race. One of them I finished the swim but could not find my bike. know one knew where it was I just kept running around looking for it.Did fine at the race and had no problems finding my bike --- most likely because I was one of the last out of the water

Your not nutts, It is totally normal. Not knowing what to fully expect can make the dreams worse. I recommend, if at all possible, to preride, preswim and prerun the course. It will greatly reduce any anxiety and help with your overall confidence on race morning! I did this before my 1st ironman and slept like a rock the night before my race, felt great race morning!

I had nightmares like that all the time before IM. I still made it to the real race on time. Maybe your body is training you even in your sleep to be thorough. Set 2 alarms and triple check your gear!

I disagree, we're not a normal species, we all must be nuts to put our selves through what we do, even though we wouldn't have it any other way. Does a psychopath stop being a psychopath when he sleeps, of course not, they're still nuts, as are we.

Something that dominates your waking hours is sure to have a profound effect on your sleep. I too have had the dream about turning up late. I think the question is, what does this dream mean. Any dream specialists out there?

Awful dream.........I am also preparing for my first IM. I had a dream that the I was on the course and started drinking the IM perform....everytime I did I started to throw up. Like your dream it felt very real and I woke up feeling sick to my stomach.

I have never even tried the IM perform....not sure where the dream came from. I will be ordering some if they continue to be the IM race sponsor.

In my most memorable IM dream it was taking me FOREVER in t1 because I was dressing up with moon boots, full snowmobile suit, gloves, hats, facemask, etc AND pulling a huge cooler behind my bike.  By the time I got all ready to go the bike course was closed and I was a DNF.

weird huh?

First Ironman I had two weird dreams...

1. Came out Transition and found my bike gone. I freaked out and stole a kids Big-wheel and did the bike on that....

2. I was late to the start and slide down a water slide to go flying into the water to bridge to the leaders...

Oh yes I have had weird dreams - got in to warm up for the swim, talked to everyone and them for  some reason got out and missed the swim start I kept saying "But I was in the water see I am wet."  Before  my first Ironman I had the same dream about 3 times in the week prior. I saw myself swimming along, feeling good, and enjoying the day. It really calmed me down, and gave me confidence that I could do the race.

Yep.

Strangest one I had, I was sat on the sand dunes watching the swim start in waves. Instead of the swimmers being in the water or standing on the beach waiting for the gun, they were all layed on their front, lined up like a racing car grid start, staggered one behind the other. They were waiting for the tide to come in and wash them out to sea.

I casualy went back to the car, put on my wetsuit and layed down on the beach in my grid position, waiting for the tide to take me out.

Quite an interesting yet slow way to begin an IM.

I hope my family can put up with me till September, it'll all be over then..........well......

I had a very vivid dream last night that my bike was stolen before the start of a race while I was checking in.  Went through great sense of loss and realized how special my bike is to me and would not be so easy to replace.  It took months to find just the right saddle, just the right aerobars, just the right wheels, cassette, even my carbon fiber water bottle holders.  Scary how much we put into all this.

hahahaa! That's so weird! I remember back when I first got into triathlon I had a really funky dream where one of my friends (who is NOT athletic at all) ended up wearing my running shoes out of T1 (apparently this was a swim-run triathlon, or something) so I had to wear like a size 16 shoe that I just found lying there to do my run in. There was more to it than that but it was messed up for sure, and very stressful! Thankfully I've never had any major issues in any of the races I've done. racechecklist.com is one of my good friends to make sure it stays that way.

I had tons of bad dreams before the IM. Believe in yourself and you'll be fine come race day, quitting becomes much easier once you start doubting yourself.

I've had lots of bad ones, too, but the one I had last night was beyond weird:

In mine, Lionel Ritchie (from 1984) was a serial killer who killed spectators.  He was waiting at the top of each hill and (no kidding) said, "Hello, is it me you're waiting for?" and then killed the spectators.  He was wearing a lavender jumpsuit with turquoise accents and a weird collar.  At one point, I was on the run portion of the IM and Lionel Hello-ed me and I told him (typical IM dark place crankiness) "Don't even think of trying to kill me.  I'm too busy for the shi!".  Also, as if that wasn't weird enough, the race directors made all the athletes catch fish during the swim. The fish we caught were the only things we were allowed to eat for the rest of the race. Weird.

Haven't run an Ironman and don't intend to run one in the near future (just a HIM) but have had an Ironman dream after watching Kona--hard to say if good or bad. Dreamed I ran Chrissie Wellington down after the bike (yeah, right--she'd be done with the whole thing before I ever got off the bike!) and got the lead at Kona. Flying along like the marathon was totally effortless--lots of detail as I've seen the entire course.  Then suddenly there were no more spectators, or mile marks, or officials. I thought I must have taken a wrong turn, and then recognized a landmark from a favorite run on Oahu, where I lived for two years. Oops--wrong island. But still had my race number, body marking, and everything. Weird!
