Panama City Beach, Florida
United States
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 7h 32m 40s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Under 40 clyde
Age Group Rank = 25/32
Pre-race routine:

Woke up and saw the moon over the ocean it was pretty cool. Took a quick shower to wake up and headed over to the race site.
Event warmup:

Nothing to much. Got in the water and then streched out.
Swim
  • 49m 8s
  • 2078 yards
  • 02m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Still really learning how to swim efficently. I felt good coming out of the water though. Not much contact after the first 200 yards.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder
Transition 1
  • 03m 53s
Comments:

I decided to put on my shoes in transition rather than on the bike. I wanted to make sure there wasn't any problems show wise I would have to deal with on the bike. Also the transition area was bumpy and I didn't want to have my shoes come off again like at St. Ants.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really
Bike
  • 3h 11m 31s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good on the first half. Taking in some nutrition and kept at the same pace. Around mile 30 my back started aching and I could feel that it would start to spasm soon. I had to get off my bike and really strech it out. I had to get off and stectch 4 different times to keep my back from going into spasm. The part that was frustrating was I kept passing the same people again and again and then I would have to stop and strech out then I would pass them again. Unfortunatly this was the start of my body acting up today.
What would you do differently?:

Bike fit and more training.
Transition 2
  • 04m 4s
Comments:

The normal problem of racking bike when there are other bikes around. The bike and seat are too tall and I have to turn it sideways to get it under the bar. I then had to stop once more and strech out my back. Grabbed sunscreen (very good choice) gels and tiny thing of glide and left.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Run
  • 3h 24m 5s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 15m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew I had lost a little time on the bike course but I felt pretty good and knew my goal or between 6 and 6:15 was still very much in reach. The first mile I had my normal rubberlegs and it was a slow 12:07. Then the next was 10:18, 10:04, 10:15, 10:30. Then the wheels came off. Between mile 5 and 6 I started cramping up very badly. I was absolutly covered in salt and my black trisuit was white in most places. I think I just lost to much salt/endorolites. From that point it went from competing to a struggle to finish. I would trot a little ways, strech out my legs. Trot some more then walk. It was miserable. lot of walking. I managed to semi-jog the last half mile but it was just bad. Body just shut it down and kept cramping up.
What would you do differently?:

Start trying electrolyte / salt tablets for longer races. Also could have trained harder but the last 6 weeks of work has been insane 7 days a week.
Post race
Warm down:

The photo from when I crossed the finish line will probably be funny. I am very very pissed off. I went to the tent and grabbed a couple beers and waited for more pizza to get there and then I ate and drank said pizza and beer. Then went back to hotel, fought urge to nap. Headed down to the pool to enjoy the redneck rivera scene and I was not disapointed. Calling Panama City Beach redneck is like calling Mt. Everest kind of hilly. It was glorious redneckocity. I got a beer and smoked the cigar I had brought from home for after the race. Then I jumped in the ocean to strech out some. Swam around and then went and sat on the sandbar and streched out my legs in the water. Went to the party which was nice talked to brett (rocketman) and Jenelle (runnergirl29) and her boyfriend then I went home and went to bed. Up early and was craving lots of food before I hit the road. Saw Waffle House and said "When in Rome" Got an All Star; over easy, pecans on the waffle, smothered and covered.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Body issues. Back, cramping. Maybe an I.V. in my pocket would have helped.

Event comments:

The race itself was great. It was very organized and well run.
I was just very mad at myself for not training harder the last 4 weeks and cramping up and everything that went wrong with the race. On the upside this is only my 4th race two sprints last fall and St. Ants so I guess I have no where to go but up as far as long course goes.

It's just a dress rehearsal for your IM, baby!

Impressive bike time considering you STOPPED & DISMOUNTED 4 times! Great job on the swim - you are making great strides on your swim. Looks like your run got off to a great start; sorry to hear it was so painful!

So proud of you, Rich! Congratulations!!!

(Funny race report, too.)

Great race and nice meeting you. This is a tough race and competing it as only your 4th try is very impressive.

Congrats on your first IM!!! Let's talk nutrition. Try Infinit. I WAS a cramper too until I found this stuff. http://www.infinitnutrition.com

I get my formulation with tons of sodium so that Inever get low on the bike. Then I take endurolytes on the run. Do you use those? You gotta get this worked out, and you will. It's just going to be trial and error.

Either way, you did your first HIM and you did awesome. A huge congrats to you!

Rich!  Awesome dude!!  You stuck it out, I'm so proud of ya!  It's hard...there's no "easy" to a half IM.  Well maybe if you do this day in and day out, but we are just normal people and the fact that you finished means that you rocked.  Imagine all the improvement you're gonna have before we do IMAZ.

I can't wait to do my half IM this season...seeing your race report is an inspiration.  I know there will be pain.  But I'll get thru it.  You experienced pain, dealt with it, and at the end of the day, you triumphed over it.  You did an awesome job man, congrats on a great race and I'm soooooo lookin' forward to racing with you next April!!

Rich -

Way to stick it out on a rough run.  Seems like you had a great race otherwise and you identified what kept you from finishing stronger.  Live and learn, right?

It was great meeting you....  maybe we'll see you next year!

You finished two positions ahead of me in  the Clyds division.  I had the same salt issue.  Only it was the blisters that I got that kept me from running.  Good race anyway and way to ahng in there.

I hear you on the cramping issues...had the same problem at Ironman last year.  I gotta work on the Endurolyte amounts and see if it helps.  Still you had a great race, and it's always good to take valuable lessons from it too!

"glorious redneckocity"...I say my droogie could you be a "Clockwork Orange" fan. If not you've got the vernacular down.
Great effort in toughing it out. There's no training for that Rich, it's just gut determination and buddy you've got it. I salute your effort. Get that bike fit/position checked and get the hell back out there and get ready for another. Congratulations on a tremendous effort.

Rich:

Great meeting you just prior to the swim ... your calmness and humor was a great relief.

You did great! I too thought that @#$%^& run was never going to end.  The park is what purgatory must be like ... but even then, the 'heaven' of the finish line was miles away!

Having survived this, though, you are so much more prepared for what to expect for IMFL - and what to expect out of your training.
