Oceanside, California
United States
World Triathlon Corporation
Total Time = 5h 35m 38s
Overall Rank = 695/2903
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 89/249
Pre-race routine:

Ate a bagel and nutella, drank a bottle of powerade, and ate a caffeine Gu right before the swim.
Event warmup:

No warm up, oops.
Swim
  • 38m 35s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Garmin calls it 1.4 miles, which is a 1:33/100y pace. That's how fast it felt like I was going, so I don't know if the course was long.
The turnaround was CHOPPY and that was a new thing for me, fighting the big waves. I never got into a good draft. That was disappointing.

Transition 1
  • 05m 12s
Comments:

Long-ass run from the lake to my bike and out of T1. That had to be a quarter-mile of running.
Bike
  • 2h 55m 14s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.17 mile/hr
Comments:

I tried not to push the effort on the bike, to save legs for the run. Especially on hills, I avoided standing and never got to a full huff. That seems to have paid off.
Being the last wave to start, I had to ride around a LOT of older more lady-like racers. I felt like Elliot, surrounded by course clutter. I was vexed by the amount of blocking that goes on. Some folks just weave side to side, making passing them a challenge. It was frustrating.
Camp Pendleton is beautiful. TANK CROSSING signs on the road cracked me up. A military base looks just like a college campus with obstacle courses.

What would you do differently?:

I had a lot of lower back pain. I should stretch my hamstrings more. I think that's my problem.
Transition 2
  • 04m 55s
Comments:

What a fucking nightmare transition. I grabbed someone else's bag and put his socks AND shoes on before I realized how wrong I was. Then I took it all off and started over. I re packed his bag because I'm not a dick, and I resigned myself to taking a long T2. I'm not sure where my brain was.
What would you do differently?:

don't be retarded?
Run
  • 1h 51m 42s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Last week I wanted to break 2 hours on this run. I've never come close to that on a 70.3, so this was a huge success.
First 3 miles I tried to get into a comfortable pace without worry about what the Garmin said. I was pleased with the mile splits. I kept that effort level until halfway through when it became hard to maintain the pace. Every mile it was harder to keep the same pace, so I pushed to get through it. I ran a bit with Fitzy and Todd. It was nice to see some friendly faces. A travel race can be a lonely day.
This really was the best executed run I've ever had. I was able to run strong, with extreme consistency the entire course.

13 splits:
8:22
8:39
8:38
8:46
8:36
8:32
8:48
8:44
8:27
8:41
8:25
8:16
7:56
What would you do differently?:

I could have pushed a bit harder starting at mile 4 instead of mile 7....but it's hard to fault anything on this run. I'm just going to enjoy it.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked a few miles with my bike, to the hotel for a restful afternoon chasing toddlers around.

Nice job Chad. I think you hit all the achievements you wanted at Oceanside. You looked so comfortable on the bike and run. Your fitness and endurance is getting very good and I loved seeing you on the course. You've always been someone I've looked up to in this sport and I was glad to see that you had a good day. Congratulations.

1. I think you grabbed on to a motorboat halfway through the swim... 37.9 mph? Wow.

2. Run of a lifetime for sure. Those hard/easy intervals that you were doing paid off.

3. Welcome to the course clutter club.

Great race Chad.

Awesome race Chad - so sorry I did not see you out there anywhere this past weekend.  T2 story is hilarious - what I remember most from T2 was that my toes were absolutely frozen and I had a hard time running with my bike.  It took about a mile on the run to get them thawed out a bit.

You hammered the bike - 2:55 is incredible considering the hills we had to endure.
