What are everyone's experience with INFINIT on IM??  I used Perpeteum last year and it just flat out did not work for me and I had a terrible race and I used pre-mixed bottles which was probably a mistake as well.  Looking into different nutrition plans this year and I've been hearing some good things about INFINIT.  Anyone have any advice / recommendations.

I have used Inifinit for the past 2 races, but planning on switching to on course nutrition this year.

The key to Inifinit is to start using it well in advnace to practice with it. If the formula you got does not work, tweak it until you learn what ratios to carbs protein etc work for you. Infinit is tricky, but once you get it formulated to your preference it is a pretty good route.

I have been using Infinit for the past 2 years and I have had excellent results.  I would highly a personalized Infinit formula.

Best of Luck!

I believe Perpeteum did not work for me because I mixed my bottles at 4:30am and then had 2 spare bottles in my special needs bags with powder to mix with water once I needed them.  I got to teh bike at 8:30 am, meaning the Perpeteum had already been mixed for 4 hours and it was sunny that day and starting to heat up.  I have used Perpeteum in the past with good results in shorter races (even a marathon) but for some reason I did not care for the taste of the mixture on this day therefore stopped taking it about half way through the first lap on the bike (bad decision).  I was using water and gels and then started to cramp up midway on the 2nd lap.  By then my stomach was not happy with me and all I could muster was something that was ice cold (water and Perform).  I admit I didn't have the most solid nutrition plan going into the race but have used Perpeteum numerous times, even on my 80 to 100 miles rides.  For some reason, it didn't sit well with me.  If you talk to Hammer, they will tell you that it goes bad about 4 hrs after mixed in warmer temperatures.

I guess I am looking for something that doesn't get skunky right away.  I have also used Perpeteum solids on my longer runs with good results but the amount of them that you have to take to get enough calories is somewhat a pain in the butt.

I use Infinit. Used it in 2008 and now in 2012. I can stomach it HOT, so it's a winner. I live in Texas, and have ridden in 100+ degree heat and I could still drink it. I also like the fact I can make a 4-hour bottle and use it for the entire ride. Mind you, I also mix in solids, or I get light headed and hungry. Just liquid nutrition doesn't work for me.

It is the protein in the Perpeteum that can make it taste less palatable to some.  Infinit can probably have the same issue if you go with much protein in your mix.  You could try a drink without protein (Infinit or other).  But while your 'ad hoc' nutrition plan may not have helped your cause, the issues you describe don't sound like the effect of drinking warm Perpeteum (or not taking enough of it either).  Those sound more like typical pacing/fitness issues during an IM (again, perhaps compounded by poor nutrition--really hard to tell from the info you've provided).

Only reason IMO to use something like Infinit (which I do) is to pre mix, so you'd likely have the same result with any mix.

I used Infinit for at least some of my nutrition at the only IM I did. Two bottles on the bike, two bottles in special needs bags. I went through it pretty quick and then just took the stuff they had on the course for the rest of the ride-alternating water bottles and powerbar drink (I think?). I just bought the pre-packaged Infinit "bike" formula. I am just too much of a simpleton to mess with all of the different ratios...... I thought it worked fine but for my next one I am just going to use whatever I get from the aid stations + a gel flask for more condensed nutrition. Infinit wasn't so special that I feel like it was worth the effort of bringing it with me, mixing it, etc. It was very palatable but I am easy to please.

I like Infinit and have had success with it.  Used to use a CarboPro/Nuun combo, but was getting bloated from it, possible from the sweetener in the Nuun, added to my propensity to swallow air in the swim.

I would love to live off the IM course, and will need to learn to like the taste of Perform a little better to do so.  Happy that GU is the gel...that helps.  I do supplement my Infinit/sports drink with gels or blocks/chomps on the bike.

Run is not so much an issue...I just down whatever I can stomach by then.

I use Infinit for both bike and run and it works well for me.  This will be my first IM with it though.

I used it for the Goofy Challenge at Disney and it worked well.  I filled all four bottles of it and only used two for the first half of the marathon portion.  Once I kicked one I'd fill it with water...kick the second I'd fill it with on course nutrition (powerade).  Saved the last two for the last 13 miles and repeated filling with water and powerade for the other two.

x3. Used the standard bike and run formula on 2 IMs. No problems, and plan to use on my next one.

I'm not saying I wouldn't use the on course stuff...a little concerned about the sweetness of Perform all day...I'm actually training with it now..more concerned with the bike leg and was just looking for different opinions

I had issues with Perpetuem, too. Just never sat well on my stomach on race day for whatever reason. Switched to EFS products and haven't turned back. They're gluten-free and are super easy to digest. So far, so good. I've been training with two feed bottles on the bike. Just wanted something super simple for race day. Good luck finding something that works for you!

You likely wouldn't 'just' use Perform as you'd probably have to drink too much of it to get the calories (carbs) you are looking for.  But you could do Perform for some fluid and electrolyte replacement.  And then water and gels for the rest of your fluid and calorie needs.  Or you could look at something like Infinit that allows you to combine most of that (you'll still need water).  You do want something (or things) which you can stomach the taste/consistency over a long time period while exercising.  You need enough fluids and calories.  You should probably have some electrolytes.  Outside that, it becomes personal preference as much as anything (protein, caffeine, solids, etc.).  As others noted, finding a simple plan is usually the best.  And being able to rely on the course for at least some of your needs is likely to make your planning easier.  Good luck!

I used perpetuem for several races up to and including HIM's.  Never sat well with me.  Switched to infinit, and things work 100 times better.  Tweaking my IM bike distance formula now...  More calories, less protein.  Can't do that with other products, so it works for me.  Also, my stomach has issues with most products - no dyes here.

I have been using Infinit since 2009, works great for me, Ive used it in my Irnoman and several 1/2s as well. I find that I can not eat much when Im biking or running so Infinit is awesome for me. Did the entire Ironman on liquid, have another one coming up this year and plan to use it for the entire event as well. Right now I use it on all my workouts over 1.5 hours in length.

This is all the more reason IME to live off the course nutrition as they keep the drinks cool usually.

Pacing and fitness issues are much more likely culprits for cramps than most suspect.

Beat me to it. The only times I notice me cramping are either 1) not enough water (gels/infinit too thick in the stomach) or 2) Going too hard than I can handle.

Thanks for all of the replies.  I think I'm going to give the living on the course method a shot.  I think being able to have colder drinks is a plus for me, plus it will be easier to keep my nutrition plan organized and less things to remember to bring with me.  Thanks again.
