Overall Rank = /

Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4am and had instant oats and a banana plus coffee. Went back to bed until 5:45 then got the shuttle bus to the race start. Had a gel 15mins before the start.
Event warmup:

No warm up, just chatted with people
Run
  • 3h 52m 30s
  • 42.16 kms
  • 05m 31s  min/km
Comments:

I met an English guy at the start and we ran together for the first 5k which was fun but meant I was a bit slow, after that I tried to pick up the pace then relax for the first 16k and then focussed hard on maintaining the pace up to 32k .
At 34k the whole atmosphere changed, people were collapsing, the road got blocked by an ambulance and runners were cramping or walking all of a sudden. My legs were really tight and my gait got bad and I started to get ITB pain in my right knee which really slowed me down.
I just wanted to finish at that point but managed to push hard and had a great final 1k with amazing crowd support and a wall of sound in the finishing area!
What would you do differently?:

I think a few long runs up to 38km would help if I'd had a longer training time but otherwise it all went well.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched, ate bananas and oranges and drank some sport drink and a bottle of water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

If the race had finished at 32km I'd have been fine but that last 10k really tested me. I think more long runs would have helped.

Event comments:

This was a great first marathon, thanks to everyone in the MG for your support!
If I do another one I'd love to know how to conquer that last 10k!

Great job!  It's always that last 10K that is the true test of your training.  Way to gut it out!

Great you got through the tough parts! They say the marathon is "20 miles of hope followed by 6 miles of truth" - guess you can relate to that! Cool Good time for a first up go at the marathon distance. Well done!!

Wasn't the wx a cracker given all the rain in the days leading up to Sunday! Are you up for another go next year?

(I had a shocker  - see my report for more...)
