Subject: Costumes
Costumes have really invaded a lot of 5K (and longer) races these days, for better or worse. For the most part, it seems that triathlons have remained much more serious than the standard running races, at least those that I have been in/around.

Have any of you seen any participants donning anything really funny or interesting or cool or even what you would consider stupid for any portion of a race? I recall that in the mid 90s, my high school swim coach, who happened to be a Jimmy Buffett Parrothead, had some fins that he had attached to his bike helmet. They didn't change functionality and certainly didn't add speed (they were cloth), but it was definitely unique.

A small part of me wants to get a Batman oval on a tri shirt and then don a Batman mask with a cape for the run portion of some random triathlon, but since I am a BOP runner, I'm sure it would be a bad idea, beyond the added heat . I just think it would be pretty funny, but at the same time, a large part of me thinks it would be somehow disrespectful to the sport. I'm sure this will wind up getting me some flames, but such is life.

This sport actually requires some training and commitment plus the entry is far too expensive to go out there and screw around.

If you check here enough a pic will pop up in the header featuring the BT superheroes from a local race in Ohio.  The only section where you could even tell we were dressed up was on the run.  Only 2 of us had capes.  Most of the costuming was tweaks to regular workout gear-- nothing fancy.

I'll tell you what-- I talked to more people that day than ever before, and BT was discussed in every conversation!

--Drat.  I need to take a class in how to get pictures on here.--

Oh, I did the Kansas 70.3 dressed as Dorothy (on the run portion) for 3 years straight. Complete with a basket and little stuffed Toto and sparkly red running shoes.  I'm BOP, so a little levity made the race WAY more fun for me.  Costumes are quite unusual at tris, but not unheard of.  Lisac from BT got in the act with me the 2nd year (they had a costume contest inspired by my dressing up the first year--only Lisa and I participated--LOL), dressing as Glinda the Good Witch, which I believe she has done 4 times now.

And how would doing anything like I said preclude commitment or training in the slightest?  I work my butt off all year round to get better, and I very well know the amount of money I spend on the sport.

I have been searching for flesh colored shorts to wear for my local sprint series and we can race w/no shirt, I think it would get alot of looks.

That's what is important to you. The OP may want to have some fun.

I love costumed running.  I have seen an occasional costumed triathlete.  To me, there is just so much space in transition and additional stuff is not necessary so if I can't get my stuff in that tiny space I will not do a tri in costume.  Plus....you really only get to wear it to run unless you can manage it on the bike.  We have a sponsor for local events with a cockroach costume available that can be worn bike/ run.  I wouldn't want the added warmth of a big costume like that.

My plan for next year's 10K costume contest is a cowbell.  We all need more cowbell.

As long as your costume doesn't adversely affect other "serious" competitors, I don't see any problem with it.   Not to diminish the effort and commitment that goes into training, but for the majority of us this is a recreational activity or hobby, which is supposed to be fun at the end of the day.  If someone wants to pony up the entry fee and then wear a goofy costume, then that's their choice.

In fact, I'm all in favor of the other guys in my AG  wearing heavy, restrictive, hot costumes.  Especially on the run...

Haha..Like I said, I was only thinking of having the yellow Batman logo silkscreened on a tri shirt or singlet, and then donning a mask for the run.  Nothing heavy!  It actually wouldn't even really slow me down because I could hopefully put the mask on as I run out of T2, which is when I am usually putting on my 2XU visor or Zoot Icefil hat anyways.

I've also dressed up for a 44-mile relay - twice

The year we were a 70s basketball team:

I actually ran with that afro wig. I do races to have fun!

My wife and I did a sprint triathlon on Halloween a few years ago dressed as the incredibles.   Both of us did the whole race (yes, including the swim) in full costume.

Ummm, are you the one dressed up as Silk Sceptre (which is awesome and hot by the way)?  If so, how much of that 44 miles did you contribute in those boots.

The boots were just for the photo. I actually put on pants and running shoes to run. Still in character though

Ditching the boots is understandable.  But you should have kept the stockings/suspenders clipped to the running shorts.  Great combination of sexy and athletic.  Alright, I'm done sounding like a creepy internet perv now.

The Incredibles wins everything - great costumes!

I have a hard enough time getting the running gears going as it is...I can't see myself handicapping...myself.  Not just yet, anyway.  I guess if it were warm enough at Halloween around here to do one then I might consider it.

This couple was at my last Tri here in Utah. They were actually getting married that day so they were justified. Someone had a sign at the end that said "You did it, now you get to do it"

I see a lot of people with that on their shirts, but I don't understand why you would use that at a triathlon. I guess it's because I kept reading it as "Du or Du not, there is no Tri."

We saw a decent number of silly hats, bunny ears, and a couple red capes at IMLP on Sunday. On the drive home we were discussing what would be fun to put in the special needs bag next year.

Whoever posted that it's expensive and a major commitment (or whatever they exactly said) is right, which is exactly WHY you need reminders that this is supposed to be fun.
