I decided to play around and tried to do some aquajogging for my cool down yesterday and realized 2 things.  First, you need something on your feet - scuffed mine up pretty good.

Second?  It's a hell of a workout.

What's the technique?  Is it a minute to minute equivalent to real running?  Or is it more intense?  I felt like I need way more leg strength, but maybe I was doing it wrong - sort of stayed low and pushed, not stand up straight and actually run.

Any good resources?  Good to maybe put one workout in a week even if not recovering from an injury?  Swap out a short run or swim for aquajogging?

I only do deep water with the belt as I use it for injury recovery. Haven't heard much about using the shallow water/ground and it's advantages/disadvantages/techniques.

Can you touch the bottom?

I keep picturing in my head the NFL players looking like they are tyring to spring in the pool, or doing  high knees and such.

I did it fronwards and backwards and sort of leaned into it.  Especially when going backwards - sort of like if I put my back up against a car and tried to push it - if that paints a picture of what I was doing.

Ditto what Lisa said, only deep water for me.  I've tried with and without the float belt.

Yes, it can be a hard workout but you won't get your HR up as much as real running.

x2 on deepwater, although I've seen people doing it when touching the bottom.  I think that touching the bottom would be quite a bit different from not (edit: once talked with a guy who was doing it touching the bottom, and he said he was working on strengthening his knees prior to going in for surgery).  Deep water is a great way to rehab from most any run injury.  When I've done it, I just used a couple of swim noodles under the arms, and that worked perfectly fine for my needs.  Probably never did more than 45 minutes at a time, although I'm sure you'll find somebody on here who has done ultra aquajogging in the pool.  You can mix it up with intervals to alleviate the boredom.  I am always outdoors in the pool, so at least I have mountains, trees, birds, and bugs to entertain me while doing circles in the deep end.

I don't get it.  So you float, cant touch the bottom, and just move your feet around like what?  A bicyle motion? is it really "jogging" or just float and move your feet in cirlcles?

I guess I always thought it was like the NFL guys running from one end of the pool to the other during rehab.  Goes to show you what I know about it.

You float, and only move your arms with enough motion to either 1) help you stay floating if you're not wearing a belt, or 2) keep balanced in the water.

You make a running motion with your legs, almost like running on an invisible treadmill.  So your "footstrike" won't be very far in front of you, and you'll use your legs to push your foot backwards.  Lift your foot (and I find you will exaggerate the recovery motion here, pulling your foot a little higher almost like doing knee raises) and repeat.  You'll get some resistance on the recovery, too, which seems a little awkward at first.

You should move forward in the water while you are vertical.  Once you dial in the motion, the balancing will be easier and you'll be able to go faster/harder.

this should give you a sense of how it's usually done - I'm looking at probably a good three months of it in the hopes the time off will help cure my plantar faciitis ... ugh ...

I have a number of aquajogging links on my computer at home, but this is the one that made me decide I wanted to try aquajogging initially (followed by a knee injury solidifying my decision): http://www.active.com/triathlon/Articles/A-New-Kind-of-Brick_-Try-Aquajogging-to-Boost-Your-Run.htm

They describe the deep water aquajoggin technique in there.  I can post the other links when I get home if you're interested.

Doing some internet searching.  I guess I was thinking "pool running" not aquajogging.  Sometimes the name is interchangable, but runner's world mag has pool running in the shallow end with shoes for more traction, and official aquajogging is the stuff you guys are talking about - off the deep end!

lol, I was thinking of that...

I'm not a 65 yr old lady - but a 6'7" dude with some MMA training.  Plus I know pool etiquite to not get in the way of swimmers.  I'm thinking it wouldn't escalate to somethign like that.

There is an anecdote in the Chi Running book about a guy that ran a marathon with only Pool Jogging for training.  The exception I'm sure, but I guess it has benefits.

did deep water aqua running witha belt for 3 months recovering from achilles injury. Not awesome by any means but it helped me maintain some fitness.

I have aquajogged quite a bit in the past to maintain fitness while injured. I use AQX shoes. They have vents and fins that increase resistance.  I believe they are about $70 and available on Amazon.
