So my goal this year is pretty simple. I usually make 20 or 30 resolutions and forget half of them by the 2nd. This year, I'm focusing on consistency. To that end. 1 year, 1000 miles running. Which is 2.74 miles per day, every day. So here we go. If you want to hop on board, feel free - just bring your running shoes. 1 year, 1000 miles.

January 1, 2013 - 3 miles. 997 to go.

I'm in.  I had the same goal - first 1000 mile running year. I'll get that ball rolling Wednesday.

I'd like to get in.  995.5 to go.  How are we going to be held accountable to the group?  Monthly or weekly checkins?

I'm in. I also have a modest goal of 1013 miles on the bike, excluding trainer time. So 2013 miles total.

I think I'll join in for this.  I do reserve the right to remove myself from this challenge at any time though.  I got in 930 miles for 2012.  So far for 2013 I have 10 miles logged.

Well, this might be a bit of a stretch for me, since I only ran just over 500miles this year...but I'd like to try.  I have been dealing with an achilles issue of late, but hope to be back building next week.  What I would really like is to try and get out running 5x a week, so I should be able to translate that into close to 1000.

Set your goals where ever you need to. For me it's 1,000 miles. That's enough that if I don't keep up on it I'll fall really far behind really fast - but not so much that it takes forever. I'm pretty slow, but even for me three miles is less than an hour a day. So depending on how you want to break it down:

1,000 miles a year

83.333 miles a month

19.23 miles a week

2.74 miles a day

If you run 3 miles a day instead of 2.74, you can miss almost 32 days and still meet the goal. So there is some flex room. Just depends on what works for you.

I'd say we should check in with the group at least weekly, any less often and it's too easy to get left behind. Also, if someone wants to join in the middle, I'm cool with that. We can either prorate miles, or your year can start whenever you do.

Good Luck!

Hey good luck guys. I have made mileage goals for the last three years and I personally think they are the way to go. You can use the BT Goals app to help keep track. I put both a daily and a weekly goal last year. So I could always see on my training log how many kms I averaged a day up to that point. It really helped me with motivation.

Take a look at the sidebar on my log to see if you want. I am going for a bit more than 1000 miles but the concept is the same.

Have a great year in here!

Good job so far everyone!

I need a judgment from the panel.  I have been dealing with an Achilles tendinopathy for the past month-ish.  Have been doing PT, and it has been going well, I started run/walks just before Christmas.  Then I got sick, didn't do anything for a week.  On Jan 1, I went for a 6km walk with no issues.  Last night, I did 4.5km run/walk and my Achilles was 'niggly' during the run.  This morning I have crepitus and PT says no running or doing my Achilles exercises until that is settled down.  I am *hoping* that this is a minor setback and I will be back at it (albeit slowly) next week.  In the meantime, I am ok to do aquajogging.  Since I can't calculate distance 'run' in the pool, I am wondering what everyone thinks about this: my recent run/walks have been about 8min/km.  Would everyone be alright if I counted 1km for each 10min of aquajogging?

I realize that probably no one cares but me, but I would like to keep the integrity of the challenge intact.  And I don't want to drop out of the challenge either!  I await the ruling Laughing

Looking back a couple of posts - it started with this

Set your goals where ever you need to.

If you are going to be on the shelf (or in the water) for a while, maybe calculate how much time you project 1000 miles would take you and make it a time goal for the year instead.  (i.e.   I average 8:40 miles which is 6.9 mph thus 1000 miles would take me just over 144 hours)

I think I have blocked out how aqua jogging compared.  Last July I majorly pulled a calf muscle.  I was already way behind on half mary training for a race Aug 11.  I didn't run all month but did manage to get 5 aqua jogging sessions.  I really believe it helped.  I generally did 24-30 minutes and it seemed comparable to a 5k training effort for me.

First step in challenges - stay healthy and train accordingly so that you can finish stronger than you started.

Second step in challenges - push yourself but not to the point of injury

Final Step in Challenges - Be safe and get healthy and when the PT says you can run again start slow and build back up - you have 12 months to finish this one so a sub 85 mile month (what you need to average a month to break 1000 miles) can be made up over time at the end of the year when you are fully recovered and healthy!

Final Point - we are all in this together so we all care - but in the end you have to make the final call - the bad thing about virtual challenges - kind of hard for us to come and give you an in person intervention if required to keep you motivated

Thank you, I was trying to say this as well, but couldn't get the words out. You said this much better than I could. So...ditto!

I think Peto's got it right. It's like you were thinking -- count the time you think a mile would take you. (Did I say that right?  You know what I mean!)

Well, despite waking up 3 hours late I still managed to get my run in. 3 more down. 988 to go.

So many people jumping on board - awesome, I'll put together a list for everyone in the next few days so we can link to everyone's board.

Have fun and happy running!
