crowny2 - How old is this law?  Just curious.

I think it's from 2006, but I'm not positive.
It's relatively new. Not an old one on the books as far as I know.

tealeaf - 2013-01-10 2:10 PM You go into Macy's downtown and buy a set of steak knives, and then exit the store.

This is more confusing than the law.  Who in their right mind, in the age of free delivery, would actually go to a store?

And pay retail??????

I wanted to go down there to buy knives for when I take my kids fishing in the Wissyhickie, or whatever that was. I'm teaching them to get a fish by throwing knives into the water and spear them, somewhat like harpooning them. I figure that's better than buying them a fish.

For fun, researched silly laws in Penn and got (from the dozen I found):

Any motorist driving along a country road at night must stop every mile and send up a rocket signal, wait 10 minutes for the road to be cleared of livestock, and continue.

And

Any motorist who sights a team of horses coming toward him must pull well off the road, cover his car with a blanket or canvas that blends with the countryside, and let the horses pass.

So everyone should be packing rocket signals and blankets/canvas the blends with the countryside?  We should really be worried about every law?

for me the issue is that a law like this was ever passed in the first place.

I'm sure there was a very valid reason.  And they meant well.

Yep, and it never gets removed since it doesn't come up to be an issue.

I just had a chuckle at www.dumblaws.com.  There are tons of them and at the time probably served a valid purpose.

I find the morality laws funny.  Like oral sex is illegal.  I wonder how many times THAT law gets broken and do you think anyone is going to get arrested/fined for it?

You better confirm that spearfishing is legal and that you have the appropriate licenses or permits.

Right. Thanks... after all, I'm already committing one crime by walking around with the Martha Stewart knife set (complete with wood block). Two convictions would be one too many.

tealeaf - 2013-01-10 2:40 PM . . . with the Martha Stewart knife set (complete with wood block).

Do you have ANY idea how nasty those wood blocks are?  Even if you are meticulous about cleaning your knives, food particles remain and build up and up and up.  So, after a few years, you're shoving your knives down into a bin full of rotten food, filth and germs.  No, no, no.  Get a proper wall magnet to store your knives.  Be sure to get a good steel as well.

Would love to see the history and reasoning behind it.  Let's see.  1968.  Maybe knife fights (ala West Side Story) were epidemic back then?

spudone - If it's in a bag attached to your bike, is it "on your person"?

The law says that you may not "possess" it.
So you can't have it in your bag.

(2) Prohibited Conduct. No person shall use or possess any cutting weapon upon the public streets or upon any public property at any time.

How do they define "cutting weapon"? It would seem to me that a reasonable person would not consider a penknife to be a weapon.

According to the website for dumb laws for VA.  I see nothing about knives or spear fishing.  I think you are good.  Now some of the other?  Well, that's up to you to determine!

  • Not only is it illegal to have sex with the lights on, one may not have sex in any position other than missionary.
  • There is a state law prohibiting “corrupt practices of bribery by any person other than candidates.
  • You may not engage in business on Sundays, with the exception of almost every industry.
  • If one is not married, it is illegal for him to have sexual relations.
  • You may not have oral or anal sex.
  • Police radar detectors are illegal.
  • Citizens must honk their horn while passing other cars.
  • Children are not to go trick-or-treating on Halloween.
  • It is illegal to tickle women.
  • No animal may be hunted for on Sunday with the exception of raccoons, which may be hunted until 2:00 AM.

Sounds like one of those old laws on the books. In Tucson it is illegal for donkeys to sleep in a bathtub and only 2 dildoes per household. My donkey will continue to sleep in my bathtub!!!!! They can arrest me!

Only 2?  But there are three orifices.  Complete over-site, IMO.

There's a law in Philadelphia that makes it illegal to have a knife on your person on the street or public property.

That means any knife or instrument similar to a knife, for example a swiss army knife or multi-tool.

The only persons who may have them are those in a trade, profession, or calling
and then only if they're actually engaged in that trade, profession, or calling at the moment.

So if you're a cyclist riding in Philadelphia and you're carrying a multi-tool with a knife blade in it,
you're breaking the law if you are cycling for recreation.

So for those who now ride in Philadelphia, or who might ever consider riding in Philadelphia,
will you follow the law?

The penalty if convicted is not less than $300 and at least ninety days in jail.

What kind of bike do you have Don? I don't see a single tool on there that I'd use to fix a bike.
