No guns, no politics, just some teenage boys doing something really nice for someone else; three Homecoming King nominees decided no matter who won they'd give the crown to a fellow student who has a neurological disorder. I needed to read this, and I think COJ needs it too.

Story here

This is the stuff that needs to be front-page national news.

Gives me hope that there may be another "greatest generation" coming...

That made me cry.  I have a son with a shunt and CP.  I worry all the time that kids are going to make fun of him b/c of his differences (he walks and moves so differently than other kids his age).  I pray there are kids with this kind of integrity around him as he goes through school.

I think that is a great story and mad props to those three kids... they are well on their way to being outstanding men.

That said, I truly long that I see the day when this boy doesn't have to be "given" someone else's title.  Again, not taking away from what the boys did, but from the article it sounds like this kid was popular and loved by the entire school.  Why wasn't he nominated for the crown in the first place?

As the father of a 15 year old special needs son, this is a very touching and warming link.  Thank you for sharing.  It is really good to see members of this age group try to be accepting of others who are different.  One hopes this lesson can be shared.  Not those of the kids on the school bus verbally abusing and bullying the elderly woman monitor like was in the media this spring.

As a parent, one of our bigger fears is how our son is treated by other children.  He would be easy to make fun of and tease.  He has a very warm heart and means well by people.  At some previous schools, he's been known as "the Little Mayor" because he's always saying hello to people walking down the halls and the like.  But he is unquestionably different and not socially adept.  This story gives some hope.

My thoughts too. Whenever I see these type of acts, well intentioned and heartwarming that they are, it always strikes me as more pity than celebration.

It would have been better had the 3 finalists and the principal conspired in secret to plot this.  Someone else already said that there's an air of condescension... true dat.  I'm not trying to rain on the parade, but

"I've been blessed with so many things," Cooper told ABC News' Nashville affiliate WKRN-TV. "I just wanted Scotty to experience something great in his high school days."

That's backhanded.  Like throwing a handful of quarters at a homeless guy and feeling like you did him a big favor while you smile as he crawls on the ground trying to pick up the contents of your pocket.

Tear into me if I'm being a cynic.

I think this is a great story.  It would be different if they had been treating him like crap his whole life, then 'gave him' the crown.  Sounds to me like he is well loved and this was a way to show it.  Also, I am from Canada--is the homecoming king usually a Senior?  Because the story says that this boy is a Junior, so maybe that is why he wasn't nominated.  We need to celebrate stories like these.  At least I will; it's better than the lead story on my local news tonight in which a 19 year old was swarmed and killed by 10 men.

Regardless, it's nice to hear there are still some good kids out there.

He is a teenager, doing a media interview. I wouldnt be so hard on him about his choice of words. Besides, I don't think that quote was in the video piece, just the written one. You don't know what liberties the editor took -- they could have omitted a few sentences in between the two that got published as one quote. Scotty is beyond excited, the community was proud, and the story is putting smile on millions of people's faces. It's all good.

I'm as cynical as the next guy, but it is surprising to me that anyone would be anything but warmed by the humanity shown by these teenage boys.

What great young men!  At least we know that there are 3 young stud jocks out there that have a great caring personality.  A few pros should read this and learn.
