Veteran  406  Salt Lake City |  Subject: GeocachingAnybody here doing this? I just signed up on geocaching.com, it sounds like fun. I thought it was mainly rural and mountain areas that had caches, but there are three within a mile of my house in the middle of the city! |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Geocaching Dang, stole my idea! When GPS first started to get popular, I wanted to send Lat/long to people for a party in the middle of nowhere. No cheating and looking it up on a map, just go till you get to the spot. Mostly thinking it would be a spot in the rockies.
So looked into it a bit. Plugged in my zip and found dozens and dozens right next to me - is there really log books hidden everywhere? Do you find them or only do the adventurous ones? |

I am amazed at where some are hidden--and if you don't know to go looking, you would never know they are there! |

Me and my fam do the easier ones...we don't have the fanciest GPS. Typically, we'll either find little plastic tubes or flat boxes, etc. that have a water-tight tube housing the list of finders. Sometimes folks leave trinkets. We place trinkets in to replace the ones we get. (that's a small % of the finds) We enjoy the ones with riddle-like clues. |

Some of these are hidden in VERY difficult to get to areas. Geocaching has an iPhone app that is superb. Uses the built in GPS on the phone so you can find the caches, then actually FIND them, and log the find all from your phone. |

She says this is a great way to get her boys outside and exercising. I have yet to tried it, perhaps I need to give it a try. |

| Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Geocaching Cool things about it are: geocaches are practically everywhere, it takes you to places you may have never gone to if not for searching for a cache, it gets people outside and at least somewhat active. I like the ones where people put a little thought behind the hide or the container, make ya think a bit. The easy guardrail ones and whatnot are fun to make a big numbers day but get a bit dull otherwise. |

The "urban" caches are interesting for a while, but usually there's only so many places you can find in a city setting. Best places for caching are typically large city / suburban parks (with trails) and hiking areas. Agree with the point above about how caching takes you place you never knew existed -- even right in your neighborhood There's also a category called "Earth Cache" which gives you the coordinates for an interesting geological / natural formation -- we had a fascinating time in Maui just going from Earth Cache to Earth Cache. Kids love the treasure hunting aspect once they're old enough (3+) |

Pro 5755 | Subject: RE: Geocaching Did it a lot with the kids when they were younger and it was a blast. Definitely had the feel of finding 'pirates treasure' for them. I just looked, living in Center City Philly there are over a dozen within half a mile of my house. Apparently there is one at the end of my block! |
