Pre-race routine:

This is what the race was going to be--a preparation running event (of 4) for the Bali Marathon in June.

And this is what it became. :)

I'd come in from Jakarta late last night, and as I was boarding the plane I heard "Yanti"--there's Andreas Kansil, my Bali Tri partner in crime and a dearly beloved friend. And, of course, a prime piglet. :)

He was blown out from a very successful weekend at Indonesia's new Sungailiat Triathlon (our boys and girls DOMINATED!) and I was blown out from Jakarta, but we were both eager to do this event, knew it would make us feel better, and promised to see each other at 6am! And here we are!

I couldn't believe how many people showed up at the buttcrack of dawn for this event.

Event warmup:

There was actually a really fun/funny group warm-up led by the 3V Fitness instructors (event organizer/sponsor) ... not exactly how I'd warm up for a run (I didn't do it) but it was perfect for a participation event and to get people moving and have fun doing it.

Then it was time for a group picture, so we headed to the temple monument in the middle of the big park we were in for the background.

They'd also handed out yellow ribbons for Boston and held a beautiful moment of peace in remembrance.

Folks gather for the group shot as the sun comes up.

The stairs part of the group shot. There were a lot of people!

Comments:

Oh hey! There's a run here? ;) It was choose-your-own-laps, so I figured 7 (which is technically 9.8km ... but ...) the track was really crowded, Indonesian-style (it's open to the public and there were a lot of us, too) ... kids on bikes going across, down, diagonal every which way, vendors set up on the track, people wandering 4 across, then one of them would stop, etc.

I noticed the really fast runners were amazing at navigating this seemingly without breaking a rhythm or a sweat, for that matter. The track also (inexplicably) has a bunch of stairs here and there, and they just loped along like antelopes, zooming over, across, around and through the crowds and obstacles. Joy to watch.

I just stumbled along in my usual death-zombie-shuffle but to my astonishment I didn't slam into anyone or anyone into me, either. It's like traffic here--you learn how to get through despite that there are no seeming rules or directions.

I came across these guys (who were part of our run--no, they don't just show up in Angry Birds costumes early in the morning on Sundays randomly, although hey, they might ;) ):

There were all sorts of things going on in the park--3V Fitness was doing Parkour demonstrations (Google it if you don't know--it's incredible), Falun Gong practitioners, kids' soccer teams practicing, badminton, etc. There was even a political rally. Massive group exercise:

I think there were some fun awards, maybe even some fastest-lap or most-laps (that would be me, except I'm really slow and still running WAY after everyone else :) ), but it was just a really great participation event and celebration of life and running. Here's a bunch of the runners having a blast dancing afterward:

What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a training run for me and considering that, and that I was taking pictures and essentially navigating an adventure obstacle course, this is actually a 10K PR for me! Woohoo!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around talking to people, and then walked back to my car. Thank God I remembered where I parked it--I'd driven there in the dark.

Event comments:

Super thanks to Franck Girardot and the 3V Fitness team for putting on a fantastic event, and the remembrance of Boston was especially touching.

Congrats! Love the count your own laps and the stairs in the middle. Sounds like some of my crazy runs around Lumpini Park in Bangkok. Missed you for the tris. Hope we can work it out someday.

Just me, or do those Angry Birds not look so angry? This sounds about right for some true Yanti "relaxing" time, aka get up and MOVE! Laughing  Glad you could get away for a few days.

Those Angry Birds were actually Three Little Piglets.

It was great "relaxing" and also, I slept all day today. With snack breaks, of course!

Wow, that looks like a very fun event/day with all those exciting activities going on in the park!  Your pictures, as always are great and help tell the story.  The Angry Birds are great!  Nice color-coordination and choices with your running garb, love the bright green and grey/black!

You definitely attract fun and adventure! That temple is AMAZING! And then there's just a track around it? With stairs? Indonesia sounds like a wild and awesome place.  Must visit!!
