Sunny
Total Time = 2h 39m 27s
Overall Rank = 369/871
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 70/116
Pre-race routine:

Met some of the BT group at Big River grill the night before for a few laughs and some good eats. Went home went to bed about 1030. Got up a bunch to pee during the night, ended up getting up at 430. Had some oatmeal and got ready to got to the race site.
Event warmup:

no warmup, Set up Transition area and then we road a bus to the swim site (since we swam down river), did some swim specific stretching and hung out with Lane, RRizzo, Cbost, and Andy (from my tri club).
Swim
  • 26m 7s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt good during swim, tried to focus on high elbows during pull and keeping my hands pointed toward the bottom of the river. Also tried 4 beat kick, trying to get heels to touch surface. I tried to stay as close to the middle of the river as I could because that was where the fastest current was. Was a little crappy in beginning sighting, I guess because I didnt do it as much. Sighting got better the more I looked. People getting us out of the river, dropped me, took longer to get me out. Time to beat 31:28
What would you do differently?:

Still working on my swim, I was a little happier with it this time. although my arms got a little tired during the last portion of the swim. I was very relaxed the first half of the swim, so that was good.
Transition 1
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

Well we had to run up these steps out of the water (waterfront steps the big ones). Then run to T1 so it was kind of far away. Plus I waited 10 seconds running up the wrong rack isle... doh... But still got in and out pretty fast. Time to beat 2:49
What would you do differently?:

Not go up the wrong isle, pretty much happy with everything else.
Bike
  • 1h 09m 21s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.50 mile/hr
Comments:

Had my watch set to beep every 15 minutes. My thought was to go out hard on bike and see what happened on run. I really enjoyed the bike, felt like I went hard and felt like I was really moving; past a ton of people (that beat me in the swim) and only got passed maybe 6 times. Had to go around some barrels a few times, and it got congested on 2nd loop. Lost water bottle early on mile 5 but had a back up. Used water bottle that gave to dump a lot over my head to cool me off. Time to beat 1:10.53
What would you do differently?:

nothing, maybe go a little harder... It was hillier than MIM so the fact I only beat my time by a minute is good considering the hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Going into T2 was a little congested, so couldnt do running dismount. Racked bike then it fell over, picked it back up. Very happy with T2...
Time to beat 2:11
What would you do differently?:

Rack bike good the first time...
Run
  • 1h 01m 17s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

All I can say is HOT HOT HOT!!! Damn it was hot on the run. Once I got off the bike, we had to go up some stairs and then up a huge hill (I walked) from that point it was on the the river walk path. Pretty much at this point I was happy with my time and just wanted to do damage control so I didnt loose a bunch of time on the run. By mile 3 it got super hot, I was hitting every aid station and pouring water on me and drinking a lot. I walked a little more than I wanted to in between mile 3-4 but at this point I was burning up. I never really felt good on the run like I did my last sprint. So I kind of plodded a long... Mile 6 was up hills and down stairs again...
Time to beat 1:05.58
What would you do differently?:

I need to get faster coming off the bike in my OLY runs... 10 min miles just do not cut it... So I will work on some good tempo runs after some good bike rides.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat around and wated for Lane, RRizzo, Cbost to finsh and drank 6 beers...
By then it was damn hot, got in car and came the 2 hours home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Maybe the heat on the run, but I am super happy with my time. I wanted to beat 2:53 and I killed it....

Way to beat your target split times in the HEAT!  Nicely done ...

Careful on the dropped water bottle thing - outside of losing valuable hydration (and in some cases nutrition) the USAT officials are supposed to penalize you for "abandoned equipment". I've always thought it to be a pretty dumb rule as no one drops a water bottle on purpose (littering, though, is a different issue.)

The focus on the form during your swim paid dividends - beating your time by 5:xx minutes is huge!  Sounds like your work in the pool is paying off.

Congrats on a well done race.

Great weekend!!!  Glad you guys could make it.

You killed that bike course.  Way to make up the time I got on you on the swim.  Looks like our run times were fairly close.  Maybe next time you will wait on me a bit from the bike!  great race, Chris!
