Age Group Rank = 18/78
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:50 usual 1/2 pbj and started sipping on water. drove to a club members house and headed out to the race
Event warmup:

none other than walking back to the car because i forgot my bike bottle that and the 10 min of putting on the wet suit
Swim
  • 34m 12s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

little contact but not much more than any other wave start. quickly found open water and swam free till i started getting in to other groups. lots of people from previous waves swimming slow or floating to avoid. but mostly a basic decent swim. Big bouys at the turns great to sight off of
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

good transition.
Bike
  • 2h 29m 18s
  • 56 miles
  • 22.51 mile/hr
Comments:

lots of turns and uturns to get that course in the town of tempe. but was a decent ride. the road has some sections that are really bumpy but the majority of the race was smooth. The turn on college was the only really tight one. Biggest problem with the turns are the cyclists that do not know how to handle their bikes well and do not keep their line cuz they get scared of people behind them

What would you do differently?:

ride just a bit harder
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

first race i used socks... difficult to get on in T2. may try my next half with no socks
Run
  • 1h 59m 28s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

great flat course with ample aid stations. lots of kids helping out was great to see. all stations had music tons to eat and drink as well as ICE
What would you do differently?:

LEARN TO RUN.... seriously i really suck. This was a 1/2 marathon PR for me but really... off the bike in 6th in my age group only to fall to 18th over all with a run that i felt was decent for me
Post race
Warm down:

iced towels are the best... lots of water and walking around. then 4 peaks for pumpkin porter and a bite to eat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my run just plain sucks badly

Event comments:

This was my first 1/2 in 5 years since a broken ankle at a race. I went in to it with a stretch goal of 5:20 and ended up 5:05:44 so to say i am happy with the race is an understatement. previous half was 6:02:45 so i am ecstatic about the result.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
