I was wondering about the big hill on the RUN COURSE heading back up to Squaw. Wondering how many will actually try and run that on the out and backs as opposed to a power walk. It was fine for a 20 mile run from Tahoma, but gotta wonder how rough that will be late in the day of the race? |

Last year the bike tweaked so many muscle groups I was walking after mile 3 even though I had pleanty in the tank. Those running will probably run the hills, those run/walking will probably walk the hillls. No crawling allowed until the last mile. Do watch your step on the railroad ties on the run. Do bring a headlamp/light unless you usually do the Bike portion of the IM in 5 hours or less. We are loosing dailight every week and the mountains and trees make the sunset functionally much eariler. Also remember that you can't leave anything in the special needs bags, they got thrown out after the race. And the temperature drops fast at dusk I will be bringing a windbreaker for the run. I would hope that the road construction in Northstar will be done by the time we get there. When I was there 2 weeks ago, they had it one lane just past the roundabout heading towards the village. A tip for the headlights-get one of the el cheapo's from Walmart that you can attach to your visor. Wearing that strap around my head would get irritating after a while. I would hope to be done before it is pitch black out, but this is Ironman, and anything can happen. The temp dropped from mid 70's to lower 50's by 745pm. The shady section from Tahoe City to Alpine Meadows can(approx 4 miles), and likely will be a bit brisk in the shade. I intend to have a cheap long sleeve tech shirt and some yard gloves in my special needs bag. |

Last year I had the strap around your head one and it gave me a headache after a while. Most folks found IMLT to be 2 ish hours slower than flatter IMs like CDA and Vineman. Dark is probably 6:30 to 7pm, so if you do IMs at 11 ish hours you might be ok, but if slower than that, there may be some dark in the race. I found the bike really slowed me down on the run. But then I am a sucky hill climber. Last year the daytime high was probably 45-50 and temps dropped to low 40s high 30s by the end of the race. However it could be a totally nice day, we will just have to wait and see. I am hoping for no frost on the bike seats in the morning and a tent big enough to change in this year. Last year it was standing room only in the T1 tent with T1 times around 30 minutes. I ended up just sitting on the ground outside. So bring all your warm cloths and then just see what the weather brings 8). |

Vineman "flat"?! Vineman Full is the clearest definition of "rolling course" out there. It has sizeable hills including "Chalk Hill", which comes at mile 44 and then again at mile 100. Chalk Hill is brutal. Westside road is no joke either. No, Maryland is flat, Florida is flat, Arizona is flat (mostly), Vineman is most definitely not flat. |

My Tahoe bike time last year was 2 hours slower than Vineman and CDA. This year it is.... maybe 10-15 minutes faster than last year. The average bike time last year was 8 hours which is the bike cutoff time. |

Looks like water temps are good for sleeveless wetsuits, no caps or booties. Of course, watching the daily air temp profiles, coming out of the water is going to fun. I switched down to the 70.3 because I couldn't get enough long training back in July early August. It was a tough thing to do, but I like being realistic. But now there's only about 50 guys in my age group. Should be competitive! |

I am sure that some of us will be wishing we were in the HIM on the 2nd loop of the bike....... Lake temps are likely to drop, I would bring the booties just in case it snows the night before... |

I was having a hard time reconciling the extra course for the 112 miles vs 56 miles, but then realized the start and end are at different locations so you need the extra bit to get to 112. Good luck! Texas finally got a cold front, headed out for a comparable temperature ride this morning. Funny how 50's see so cold when you're used to 90's, then by spring your ok in summer gear in that temperature. |

The King Fire near Pollock pines blew up to 8500 acres last night. The smoke tends to blow out in the am, through the day, and then sink back in around 1700 or so. Then again, this is Ironman! |

At some points there was light ash falling and visibility was +/-200m. Looking up at the smoke it looked like a mushroom cloud, or a huge thunder cloud billowing up over the mountains to the south west. The air quality (particulate matter) was in the "Very Unhealthy" level in Tahoe City this evening. My eyes were itchy and watery, sneezing, difficultly breathing. It is like sitting next to a smoky camp fire. Another concern is the highway 28 from Squaw Valley to Tahoe City. It is a disaster. There are huge chunks of concrete missing at the drainage catch basins along the side of the road and they are covered with huge steel plates. And the sections that are replaced are just stuffed with tar and not even anywhere level with the existing road. They are doing the repairs at night (after 4:00pm) so the road is down to a single lane (alternating one direction then the other) and it takes a fair bit of time to get from Squaw to Lake Tahoe. But, on the bright side the temperatures are looking good. Mid 40s overnight, low to mid 70s for the high. Dwayne |

I guess Ironman is just going to pocket my $700. They are not answering the phone or emails so I could be done with the brand if they don't respond in any way over the next couple weeks. Customer service is soooooo bad I hate to support that type of behavior. The DMV is much more responsive, nice and understanding. |

It's hard to imagine paying the registration, training for am IM, arranging leave from work, traveling to the race site, then not being able to race. Race day conditions are always unpredictable, that is certain. And I'm sure they made the right decision under the circumstances. I was curious about what Ironman decided to do. Is their consolation to allow athletes to register for next year for $100? BTW - You all posted some awesome photos. |

I couldn't wait for any of the other option 1 options to open 2 to 6 hours later as I was at work and the page would timeout long before the 6 hours was up. Even if you don't pick an option the linc goes dead once you follow it, so impossible to actually pick anything. The whole thing was not thought through very well if they actually wanted to not miff people off. Now IM does not answer the phone or respond to emails or respond to phone messages. |

But most people plan and register for their big races a year ahead of time, including vacation from work, like you did, so I can see how it would be hard to utilize some of those options. I suppose Ironman was left with a lot of unsold finisher gear and merchandise. |
