My wife taught a local kid that served for a few years. He came back and they did a something similar for his younger sister who is only in 1st grade. If watching total strangers breaks you down you should have seen my wife when she knew someone who had a similar situation. She also teared up at these, as did I.

That never get's old.

However, my local news tried to pull that off and it kind of failed.  I cringed a bit...

what do most of you cry more at? The children running to their dads saying they missed him or the mothers crying when they see their grown sons returning?

For me I can't hold back when seeing a mother crying when seeing her "baby" returning safely and unharmed (at least physically)...

I"m really moved by the teenagers that are still crying and jumping into their daddy's arms, especially since its not cool at that age.

I also though agree that a mother getting her son/daughter back has got to be huge!

What happened?

Well, from my interpretation, they hyped up the return of a little girl's daddy who was about two or three.  I'm guessing he served his 1-2 years so really, the girl didn't know him (again, I'm guessing) other than maybe Skype because he left when she was one or younger.

They shot it at the airport and got the girl really worked up and saying "guess who it is!"  and "run and give them a hug!"...  Little girl takes off because she is so worked up by everyone, camera tracks the big moment and basically ran by/dodged the "stranger in fatigues" to get to someone/something else.  Daddy had to reach out, grab her arm, and intercept her as she tried to avoid him.  You could sort of make out the confusion in the girls face about some random person picking her up and never really was happy - sort of scared look.  I think they must have shot a bunch of footage and with some editing and splicing, they were able to sort of piece a happy reunion together, but you can see some discomfort in the actual "reunion" moment they couldn't avoid not showing.

It was a good thought, but I was a little uncomfortable since it didn't work out as well as it could have and seeing it.  However, maybe I was watching closer than  your average viewer and most just looked at it as a touching moment.

It was still a happy moment, but felt for the guy a little bit that his own daughter didn't recognize him (not to blame her, she was so young).  But it also goes to show what a sacrifice our service people make by leaving their family.  So kidos to them.

The one with the little blond girl in a blue and green dress, I'm guessing about 3 or 4, comes into the room and is basically laughing while saying "daddy" and then says "I missed  you".  She is so darn cute.  Gets me every time and I've probably seen it at least a dozen times.
