Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My husband and I are looking to get away for a little while in July or August and I'm looking for recommendations. The original plan this year was to go to Lake Tahoe, but we have travel for a lot of weddings this year and it's a busy work year -- so now we're looking to stay within driving distance of Washington, DC (say, 10 hours max). We want a mountain vacation where we can rent a cabin, basically. I have a strong preference for easy access to open water swimming. We want relatively quiet -- doesn't need to be isolated, but a crowded resort is not my thing. We just want to hang out, read outdoors, swim, enjoy beautiful views, and maybe do some hiking or mountain biking. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My sister owns an town home in Mt. Snow, VT that they use a bunch & also rent out. It's not crowded in the summer (or very crowded in the winter, either!) OWS at Somerset or Harriman Reservoir, MTB at Mt Snow, lots of trails around for running and MTBing too, and some SERIOUS hills if you want to road bike It is gorgeous up there. |

I wonder what it looks like sober... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We did Greenville, SC and Asheville, NC last year. Both were real pretty areas. For peace quiet, you may want to try Pigeon Forge, under an hour from Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mnts, so there is a bit of stuff to do as well. |

Not an uber-development. MTB lift rides if that's your thing. The Vermont Country Store is there. Great Deli jus off of exit 2 of I-91. Bennington VT is a college town. Lazy enough, but enough to do. |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() I could suggest TONS of great mountain getaway's, but it get's really limited when you also want outdoor swimming. Usually mountains and OWS don't go together. Especially at that time of year. I was just in Estes Colorado over the winter and they have a large lake as well. Plenty of cabins to rent as well. I would worry about water temp at that time of year though.
I missed the part of it being driving distance. I'm punching out. I got nothing... Edited by Kido 2014-03-06 5:47 PM |

We stopped in Gatlinburg this summer for 2 days on our drive home from Florida; I had heard really good things about it and was looking forward to it. To be honest I was really disappointed. The national park is nice, but the town is one giant tourist trap; I felt like I was on a bad boardwalk without the benefit of being at the beach (and I actually love most beach boardwalks). About a month ago there was a comedian on the radio and one of his jokes was "Gatlinburg, an old Indian word that means people in airbrush t-shirts watching through the window of the candy shop as taffy is made". I found that pretty accurate! Sorry to be a total downer, but I didn't want you to be disappointed...I would definitely recommend something like Estes Park, CO instead (there are some shops and stuff but it doesn't scream tacky tourist trap to me like Gatlinburg did). |

Yeah, if you come from a city of larger than 50,000 or so, Gatlinburg is probably not going to be your thing! :^) I was going to suggest a houseboat on Dale Hollow Lake, in TN. It would be right on the edge of your drive radius though. With a houseboat, you get to change your scenery every day, and there's definitely open water available. :^) |

Stay out of Bennington and Rutland unless you really need some heroin. I mean... It's OK, but go there for Wal Mart, Home Depot, or groceries and that is it. Manchester/Stratton/Weston/Dorset might be your thing though. Full disclosure: This area is exactly where I live in VT. Msg me if you decide to choose VT and I'll give you some great ideas on hotels, B and Bs, recreation, SBR, and hiking too. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The mountain reservoir lakes in Tennessee and North Carolina would be within your driving radius. We have a cabin on Norris Lake. It is a solid 10 hour drive from DC. I have done that drive many times. The drive down I-81 across the mountains is worth the trip. At Norris, the water is very clean. I swim in our cove in the mornings. There are lots of cabin rentals. There is some particularly good mountain biking around Norris. If you want to ride your road bike, put on the biggest cassette your have. There will be hills. Not long like Colorado, but quite steep. If you want to ride your tri bike, I can give you directions to some flatter roads where you can lay out and crank it. You would be driving maybe 30 minutes to get to flatter roads depending on where you are staying. Same thing if you run, you have to change your running style to adapt to the constant up and down. http://www.norrislake.com/index.php You can check similar listings for Cherokee, Douglas, Fontana, and Watauga Lakes. These are all decent size lakes and would have some restaurants choices and things to do, but I don't know much about the them. We used to have a cabin on Smith Mountain Lake near Roanoke which would be even closer to DC. It is nice but has built up considerably. The Tennessee lakes have more land in state and national parks around them so they are less crowded. The last time we were there we didn't even try to waterski. I can tell you more about Norris or Smith Mountain if you are interested. If you come to Norris, I will take you skiing.

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Awesome suggestions! I have been to Hocking Hills several times (I went to college in Ohio and my little sister went to Ohio University which is right there). Norris Lake was my original thought and is a strong contender -- grew up going there every year since friends had a house there. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Small world. Come back. It is just as good as ever. Where was the house you visited? Our cabin is in South Ohio or so it seems by the license plates. The general area is called Big Creek near La Follette. We may have seen you and not known it. I have three daughters about your age. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How bout you travel to Mont Tremblant in August, Volunteer for the race on race day and sign up the next day to race in 2015??? On a serious note. Mont Tremblant is a gorgeous place and My wife and I went up last year to volunteer (racing this year) and stayed in a nice condo on the side of a mountain. We were able to swim, walk around town and there is plenty of outdoor things to do while out there. You are about an hour to 1.5hr outside on Montreal if you want to take a day trip to the city. The pedestrian Village is really cool and the vibe around town during IM week is amazing. Lots of options for housing close and far away from the race. We found it to be a very peaceful mini vacation. Our favorite thing was sitting on our balcony and reading while overlooking the mountains and then when it got chilly, going to the hot tub that was right around the corner. We are in Baltimore and it was about a 10.5-11hr drive but pretty much only like 5 roads to get there. On a closer note- Shennendoah Valley, VA; Harpers Ferry, WV; Gettysburg, PA; Deep Creek Lake, MD |

I am from there so I am slightly biased. LOTS of beaches etc and you can bike there too. OR you could do something in Vermont at Lake winipassakee Vermont would be a lot chillier than the Cape. It is the off season in the mountains of VT and NH. Many of the ski resorts run the ski lifts so you can bring your mountain bike UP the hill then ride down. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I second the recomendation for Asheville. The mountain biking in Pisgah and Tsali is pretty epic. I know there are lakes in the area so I assume there is OWS. White water rafting is pretty close also. |
