Fernandina Beach, Florida

DRC sports
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 31m
Overall Rank = 154/256
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 6/8
Pre-race routine:

Only 3 hours sleep. Got up at 4AM to pack stuff in the truck, breakfast, gentle pre-stretch.
Event warmup:

Light jogging, more stretching, prepping transition area.
Swim
  • 09m 42s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 12s / 100 yards
Comments:

A little choppy and much more of a washing machine than the last race. More elbows.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Did my best. Just wasn't feeling it today.
Transition 1
  • 00m 59s
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Had the best transition time in my age group.
Bike
  • 50m 18s
  • 16 miles
  • 19.09 mile/hr
Comments:

This was my downfall today. My rear brake was rubbing the whole way, sapping my energy. I could barely maintain 18 or so in many of the areas that I should've been going faster. Sooooo many people passed me! I actually had to get off my bike at the halfway mark and try to fix it, but I don't know how much good it did. I was already fried from biking the first 8 miles w/ the added resistance so the second half wasn't any better.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure the brakes are proper!
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Exhausted from the bike ride from hell, but still had the second-fastest T2 time in my age group.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 28m 33s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Started the run tired from the awful bike ride. I had to dig really deep and fight just to refuse to let myself walk.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Turns out my run was slightly faster than the last one in this race series. I'm proud that I was able to push my way through the run without walking.
Post race
Warm down:

Jumped back in the ocean for a light cool-down swim. Felt GREAT! Also walkking and stretching before my shower.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike, of course!

Event comments:

Dropped the bike off on the way home at the LBS to get a FULL tuneup, especially the rear brake! (Also had them put on some new cool-looking handlebar tape!)

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.
