Pre-race routine:

Got there early so Emmy and Fin could take part in Taff Kids, a splash and dash for the kids.
Separated into waves based on school year.
To say my kids are vertically challenged, much like I was at their age, would be an understatement. So, they were at a disadvantage from the start.
I'm proud of both of them. They both gave it their all, and I'm proud to say they bot DFL'd.
Poor Finley, they were announcing the last athlete in his wave crossing the line whilst he was still in the water :) He then had a 100 Metres run, where he kept falling over the sand every 5 Metres, before he reached the finish.

Comments:

This was a "just get it done" swim. Having completed this swim 12 months ago in a time of 1:18:??, and having only swam for 2 x 1 hour pool sessions, I wasn't holding out much hope of a quick time.
The bay was pancake flat, and the tide was in our favour. This was probably my saving grace.
1 st buoy reached at 15 minutes, same as last year. Bit of a conveyor of bobbling heads to get around, about 2 minutes in total, then a fast tide assisted long stretch across to buoy 2.
Turned at buoy 2 ok, then the last stretch into the sun back toward the turnaround.
Out of water and back in at 35 minutes, same as last year, and out to buoy 1 again at 50 minutes.
Long drag along the top again, feeling lonely at the back of the pack, to the final turn, last push, and out and running.
Crossed the line in 1:14:31. 4 minutes quicker than last year, and a new PB.
Okay, so this was massively due to the tide, judging by my position in the pack. Speaking to others, this swim was 10 minutes faster on average compared to other swims.
What would you do differently?:

Need to train, properly.
Need to get schooling/ coaching in swimming.
Most importantly, need to get to the swimming pool and get the lengths in.

A PR is a PR, don't discount it! Although more training never hurts

I'm with TJ on this, a PR is a PR no matter what.  There was no cheating involved so it's a good PR!

Great job by you and the kids!!

Way to go, Darren!  4 min. better is super, no matter how you slice it.  Love the pictures of your kids.  Those grins say it all:  "It was fun and that's all that matters!"
