Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:45, left for the res at 5. Parking was a mess so waited in traffic to park, then walked bike a mile to the race course. Race was delayed an hour, so spent another two hours waiting for my wave to start.
Event warmup:

None really, except for the walk from parking. I know - I slacked on this...
Swim
  • 16m 32s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 12s / 100 meters
Comments:

I swear I swim faster than this!! The swim felt good - I was actually unpleasantly surprised when I got my time. Swim to first 2 buoys went really well. After the 2nd, I swam to the right to escape a girl who was attacking me (seriously - I have bruises) and felt totally off course for the rest of the swim. Stroke felt decent though.
What would you do differently?:

Work more on navigation. Get out of the water faster.
Transition 1
  • 05m 3s
Comments:

Had to run pretty far to my bike - transition area was huge. Threw on shoes and helmet pretty quickly and jogged bike to start. Was a little slow getting started - couldn't get my shoes into the toe clips!
Bike
  • 50m 40s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 14.68 mile/hr
Comments:

I was SOOOOO unprepared for this. I expected the area around Aurora Res to be flat, and the course was actually full of hills. I think I only rode the bike 3-4 times in training, figuring I could just power through it. Bad assumption. I did OK, but wore myself out before the run. Also feel pretty strongly that I could have done much better on this leg had I adequately trained.
What would you do differently?:

Train more seriously for the bike leg of the race, and be more prepared for hills.
Transition 2
  • 03m 1s
Comments:

Most of this was just the time required to get the bike to the rack, and get back to the run start.
Run
  • 32m 56s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Being unprepared for the bike just left me with NO energy for the run. My legs actually felt okay, so I ran the first two miles at what felt like an agonizingly slow pace. After the turnaround, I got a side cramp and spent the last mile walking up the hills, then running down. Was pretty disappointed that I didn't run the whole run, but my time was actually faster than I thought it was...
What would you do differently?:

Prepare better for the bike so I'd have more energy left for the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked bike 1 mile back to car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Didn't train enough on the bike!!!!!

Event comments:

This was my first tri so I can't compare, but I did have a great time! The parking situation was a mess, and late start was a pain, but it was worth it for the atmosphere of the event. It was fun to race with so many positive, encouraging women - took away the intimidation of my first tri...

Awsome job on your first Tri! 15mph isn't bad for not having trained the bike at all.

My parents live in Centennial, wish I'd told them about this, so they could go see what I'm all on about. :D

Keep it up!

Stace,

You rock girl! I'm so bummed I missed meeting you but the place was a mad house. You did great on the bike for no training! I'm pretty impressed. You're my hero for actually running on the run course! Good job and can't wait until next year.

Ovetta.

Nice race! So what do you think the deal was with the other girl on the swim? Was she panicking or something? What a bizarre experience! Anyway....Way to go!

Nice first Triathlon! You did it! Don't be discouraged about the Transition area and the distance to the actual event, most are not like that. I went to watch some friends, it was the first time I had watched a race and not participated, it was a blast watching you gals give it your all!

Go Fast

Thanks guys! I'l definately have to try and meet up with some of you CO people at Chatfield open water swimming or one of the tris this fall

The girl who bruised me on the swim was in my wave, and swimming the same pace as me, but she had a really strong kick and pull and kept running into me and not backing off. She kicked me so hard one time that I have a bruise on my ankle in the shape of her timing chip, and it was bleeding all over my foot when I put my shoes on for the bike. Apparently swimming is a full contact sport!!!

Yeah - I figured the gigantic run through the transition area would be unique to this event. It wasn't bad - just time consuming!
