View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Farkfort, Michigan
United States
World triathlon corp
69F / 21C
Total Time = 7h 10m 21s
Overall Rank = 1043/1446
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 87/104
Pre-race routine:

Shave/shower. Cinnamon Raisin bagel oj and coffee. Arrived at transition around 7. Loaded up my nutrition and fluids. I made sure my bike was good and tires inflated. Chatted up a few neighbors. Put on my wetsuit, found a bench and relaxed for about 20 minutes.
Event warmup:

I took a shower and sat on a bench
  • 51m 46s
  • 2110 yards
  • 02m 27s / 100 yards

Good swim. I have 1swim speed and I don't how far I'm swimming. High gear is the same as low and always the swimming equivalent of walking.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster,
Transition 1
  • 07m 31s

Good transition had a honey stinger gel. Everything went smooth. Michelle said my transitions were fast
  • 3h 12m 59s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.41 mile/hr

Good ride I pushed hard into the headwind and paid on the run. I don't know if I would change it.
What would you do differently?:

I had a good ride. A little slower than I wanted, but I'm happy with the effort. I really didn't answer the question.
Transition 2
  • 05m 12s

Good transition
  • 2h 52m 58s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 12s  min/mile

good run. I gassed a little and did a walk/run. Started just walking aid stations, but ended up walking more than that
What would you do differently?:

I'm a little disappointed in myself, I didn't make any friends on the run. I need to work on that
Post race
Warm down:

Space blanket and a much needed shower. I slept all the way home (3 hour) drive

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I pushed a little too much in the headwind and paid for it on the run. I should probably use base salts

Event comments:

Great race, fantastic venue. I love the bike course. Swim is easy in protected Bay. A must do

Great job Jim!

Hard to know what the weather is going to do in Michigan at that time of year!

I too have one speed on the swim. It always makes me laugh to myself when a swim workout has "speed work"!

I'm happy you had such a good time with this race!  I'm also glad to see you didn't have any mechanical issues, or over heating issues, no post-race med tent etc.  You were certainly overdue for a smooth race.

Your warm-up looks a lot like the kind I do I always find it interesting when people talk about making friends on the run - I never do. I think I am stuck in the pain cave too much to want or be able to make friends. Or maybe I'm just too anti-social!

I enjoyed reading your race thoughts and analysis, especially the comment about not making friends on the run.  Friends on the run can be key.    Nice work out there!
