Ok..here's the first of what will be many silly questions! (Thank God for the anonymity of cyber-space). Since I have to do my swim training in a pool, does anyone have any advice, or gadgets, on how to keep track of laps? I swam today for 17.5 minutes but lost track of how many laps I did.

Thanks!

If you search the previous threads you'll find lots of suggestions. I prefer to do math to remember. Let's say for example I have swam 450 yards. To remember it, I factor 45 as many ways I can: 1x45, 3x15, 5x9, etc. This way the distance you did is uniquely defined many times over, making it difficult to make a mistake.

Also, after 500 yards I usually take a lap on my watch and then start the count over.

the floatie things on lane markers.  Usually there is some slack letting you slide them back and forth.

I do the multiplication thing too.  For instance, for 5 laps, I count to 2, then after lap 3 I count backward from 2.  So it goes lap 1, lap 2, lap 3, 2 left, 1 left, done.  If I'm doing 10 laps, I do this twice.  If i'm doing 20 laps, I do it 10, 10.  Everything is broken down into 5's.

I'm guessing its the plastic cicles that make up the lane dividers.  Slide one down just like you were counting on an abacus.

Me, I use the lap button on my watch and count that way if I'm doing something continuous or intervals, or whatever.  Take very early this morning...I'm doing a steady 30 min swim, my steady pace is right around 1:35 per 100 and was planning on hitting my lap button every 100y.   My splits were 3:08, 3.16, 1.36, 1.27, 1.37, 1.40, 1.40, 2.14, .48, 1.36, 3.13, 2.22, 0.48, 1.33, 1.33, 1.34, 0.47.

I think I need a new brain or need to do all my swimming after a cup of coffee.

I actually count using my fingers. Left hand is "tens", right hand is "ones". I count every other lap (i.e. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, etc.). On my long days I will swim 3000y (120 laps). I don't lose count very often, and when I do, I'm only usually off by 2 laps.

Hope that helps.

I just keep repeating the lap in my head. I believe I've lost count before but I was off by maybe 2 laps. I also haven't gone longer than 1500m in the swim.

I bought a little wrist band to keep track, but have found that using the rings on the lane dividers works much better.  I suppose when I get a HRM with multiple lap function that will work as well.

Another vote for the ringy things. I am fairly new to swimming and saw someone doing that a few weeks ago and ask them stupidly. Now I am hooked What an Invention!!!

Gummy bears. Line them up on the end of a lane and everytime you get there, eat one.

And yea, do a search...definitely there are many good suggestions out there which probably haven't been discussed here yet.

HEY!!! I like that gummy bear idea!

Seriously though, I always struggle with keeping count. I will say the lap count over and over while I'm swimming along or look at my watch to see how the time is because I am not very fast and can figure where I should be. Any time I've lost count, I'll try figure out where I lost it but in the end, I may be off a couple of laps but if I've been in the water 40 mins or so, I figure I've done a pretty good job of working my body anyhow.

Where did you get the wrist band? I could use this for running as well - I have a loop around my neighborhood that's almost .5 miles and for some reason I find it harder to keep track of these running laps than swimming.

I do a predetermined workout. I wrap it in plastic, or put it in a baggie and then just go. There are swim SETS in the workout... I usually only have to worry about counting to 500 yards, as that's as long as the longest SET usually is... and then I break it down into 5 100's in my head... but I still lose count sometimes.

Look at my logs there are many many many examples of workouts you can use. Just cut and paste them. I've been logging swim workouts since last November.... maybe longer!

I just count.  I rarely lose my count.  But I'm a software developer, so maybe my brain just works weird.

There's also some new fangled lap counting gadget you can buy that fits on the end of your index finger...all you do is hit the "lap" button each time you complete one.

I second the plastic baggied workout - my coach sets it up for me, and usually the longest continual set I have is 500-600 yards or so out of a 3500 workout.

One of the women at our masters club uses her water bottle to count laps. Everytime she completes one, she moves the bottle by one tile on the pool deck.

The unfortunate flaw with methods using objects like water bottles or ring things is that they don't work if you do flip turns.

I have an electronic lap counter that fits on my finger.  I've used that when I was doing a long, continuous workout.

These days, I try to go in with a planned workout.  As someone else mentioned, it's much easier to keep track when you are doing planned sets and intervals.

Um, count in your head and remember the distance you've gone. It's easy to keep track per 100 meters.

Or you should be able to look at your time and know how far you've gone.

And as others have said, have a planned workout. You shouldn't be doing straight swims all the time. You need to do intervals at different intensities, drills, etc

I just try to remember the lap number in my head. I sometimes forget but I have this mean trick I play on myself that if I'm not sure if I've done 34 or 36, I have to assume it's 34. That way the only risk is doing too many laps, never too few. Arrrrghhhhhhhh.

I like the gummy bear idea but I'd need to use M&Ms. Not great on a hot day but that might make me swim faster to get them before they melt!!

I don't know why i though i was the onlyone with this problem. The button doesn't work so smoothly on my timex. I usually get off by only a couple laps so i take the smaller number. it helps me to pay attention. I also think on a regular basis, time is more important than counting laps. If you know how many laps you can do in a certain time period, seems like it would be about the same next time. you could occasionally take someone with you to count the laps. good luck finding someone.

I have a ironman timex watch and hit the lap function every 100 yds. I figure I cant forgot count on 4 lenghts of the pool at a time. After the workout I use the REVIEW function and count how many 100yd sets I did.
