Hello!
I have not yet done a short tri this early in the season and am wondering if I need a wetsuit. Looking at the transition times from last years race, it does not appear that many people had wetsuits. Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks!

I don't think examining transition times is a good way to determine if you need a wetsuit. A better way would be to go look at the race nexus on this site, and read people's race reports.

I took a look, and the water temp was around 64 last year.

I don't know about you, but I'd sure as hell want a wetsuit.

Hi. I would definately wear a wetsuit. The last few years the air temp was pretty cold too (and rainy).

In fact for the Kinetic 1/2 the day before a wetsuit is required to race.

PLEASE WEAR A WETSUIT!

This race has been very cold the last 2 years.  T1 times aren't going to reflect whether or not someone is wearing a wetsuit...  it shouldn't add more than 10-15 seconds max to your time.

They have delayed the start until 10am this year which might help with the air temp, but the water will still likely be cold.  Don't expect it to be above mid-60s, which isn't bad for an air temperature but it is cold for a water temperature.

Maybe I'll rent a wet suit then. Does anyone know if the Bonzai rentals are ok, or shall I find something here in D.C. or borrow one?
Thanks

The Bonzai rentals are fine. My friend rented one last year. Water temp will be really cold as it just snowed a few weeks ago. It takes me a lot longer than 10-15 seconds to get my wetsuit off. I still prefer to swim w/out one but with temps this cold I will have mine on.

Yeah, a bunch of us are practicing open water swimming at the location the race Saturday (April14th). Picking up our wetsuits tomorrow night at Bonzai.
Water will be COLD I'm sure. Stupid weather. Where's my Spring?

What is the transition area like? Is it asphalt or grass or something else? I assume that you run across a beach from the water to the bike...but, any guidance is welcome.

just wondering how the swim start is organized---is it a mass start with everyone at the same time, or are there waves? and do you start in the water, or do you run (or, if you're me, walk) into the water at the start?

glad to see the temps expected to be rising this week up to a forecast of sunny with a high temp of 70 on sunday. that should help the water temp get a couple of degrees warmer than 53.

Hey all, to answer the last two posts, the transition area is set up in a grass field a little ways up from the beach.  The past two years, with the weather being rather soggy, the field has been pretty torn up by Sunday morning (as there is a HIM on Saturday).  The swim start is in waves, I think a total of 5.  It should be marked in the race instructions, which you can find probably find on the website.  The start is from the shore, and then at the swim finish there is about a 50-100 yard run up a paved trail to the transition area.  Hope that helps.  Good luck!

Looking good!  Hopefully all this wind has dried things out a bit as well.

Can we get a roll call? Who's racing the sprint?

Dave - you might recognize me by my:
- Orange tri top and black shorts
- Blue trek road bike
- Confused look

This will be my first!

I might be hanging out in the Revolution Cycles tent at some point. Come by and taunt the new guy (me)!

Weather looks about as good as it can get, well compared to all of this weird stuff we've had recently. Water, still cold so I'm so glad I've got my wet suit.

This will be my first tri also (my first post too)! I apologize ahead of time to anyone if I use your zipper line as a tow during the swim I'll be the guy in the black wetsuit . . . errr, the Auburn Tigers jersey.

As for the weather - it looks like it should be fairly nice (once we get out of the water). As long as it doesn't snow I'll be happy.

Good luck to Dave and David - first race is always exciting/scary! I'll be the one taking forever in T1 to dry off and get warm. Maybe even have a hot cocoa before I get on the bike (jk - sorta)

Good luck to everyone! If this is your first enjoy it! I am doing the sprint and will be the guy out in front on the swim and then getting passed by everyone on the bike. I have a yellow softride so try not to laugh to hard if you see you me struggling on the bike.

Hey all.  Unlike Doc, I'll be the guy in the back of the swim trying to catch everyone on the bike.  I'll be in my BT tri top riding a Black and Red Elite.  Oh, and I've got the sleeveless power ranger sliver and blue QR wetsuit, so I should be easy to spot before the swim also!

AUTiger2000 - 2007-04-18 11:48 AM Temperature and fishing report: http://www.annapoint.com/fishing.htm

I think the last update on that was a few weeks ago... not that I think it would be much warmer, but a few days of 60s and sun will certainly help!  It was only about 58-59 in 2005, and yeah, that is COLD water.

I just called the Marina and they were not sure what the current temperature was however she did say "57 sounds right" without a lot of confidence.

this just in...    53 degrees.  They shortened the swim for the HIM on Saturday and are requiring wetsuits.  The sprint is unchanged and they are "highly recommending" wetsuits.  I highly recommend that someone gets their head checked if they plan to swim in that water without a wetsuit.
