I've had some time to reflct on my Oly on Sunday and I'm so glad my wife and kids were there as my "race team". My fondest memories of the day come from them. Here are few precious quotes:

"Dad, I'll point your sneakers in the right direction to save you some time." (1/4 mi uphill to T1)

"How come everybody runs into the water and you walk?"

"Dad, What happened to you on the bike" ( Guess they saw how many people passed me too!)

Me: "Thanks for coming guys. will you come again next year?"
8 yr old: "Can we jump on the hotel beds again?" (ahhh, keeping it all in perspective!)

and finally my wife: "If your gonna keep doing these things, you might as well get areal bike.'
I certainly won't let her forget that one!!!!

Have a great day, Mark

Kids are great - so honest, though sometimes painfully honest.  Your children had some funny things to say!

Cool quotes!
My daughter asked me to take her swimming. I told her I wasn't in the mood. she then replied "we can bike and run after if you want to"
I had to take her swimming

Autumn,
2 boys 8 and 10. My friend at the gym reminded about some of the lessons they hopefully learned w/o me actually saying it:
1) fitness is important
2) how to set goals and achieve them
3) winning isn't everything! seems especially pertinant now w/ the Olympics on.

Forgot above as I got to the finish chute, they were encouraging me by saying "c'mon dad we'll race you to the finish"
at one point I honestly didn't think I could catch'em but somehow managed to summon the energy. On second thought I know how, it was because of them.

my pleasure to share, thanks for the kind words.

Mark,

Great insights - kids add alot to the whole racing experience.

During first race my two oldest (8 and 5) made huge signs that read: "Swim Daddy Swim;" Pedal Daddy Pedal" and; "Run Daddy Run," which they held up fer me before each leg. To me it was awesome.

One more: During day camp this summer my 5 year old had a chance to get his face painted. He asked the counselor to paint numbers on his biceps instead. That's my boy.

Mark,

What a great family you have. That's so awesome. I'm tearing up. (Boy I'm a sap for kids). And Autumn, wow, your little 3-year-old is already ahead of her peers in the fitness goals department. Way to go all you triathlon parents. You have my respect and admiration. I find it difficult to fit in training in between happy hour and doing my yard. But with kids....wow. You guys rock!

too cool. my tri swimming coach has 4 kids and has done some tris as a team with her two oldest girls. i hope i can do that some day if my girls are interested. my 3 year old isn't going to do a kid tri yet - she's still learning to swim and is afraid of riding her new bike - but she loves running. she's doing her first kids fun run in about a month. she'll be doing a 1k on the same day i'm doing a 5k trail run.

My 12 year old neice went to the talk by Sally Edwards with me before the Danskin. She appeared to be playing games on her cell phone through the whole talk.
WE then drove out to the course and I looked at the hills on the bike course and said "Oh my god - look at this hill!!! - I didn't train for hills!"

She told "the monkey of fear and the monkey of doubt are on your shoulders having a discussion. You should just give them to me."

I guess she did pay attention better than I did.....

Kids DO make it a lot of fun. All three of mine (12, 12, and 9) trained for the kids triathlon that was associated w/my last Oly (my first tri) so it was a family affair. The older girls think they're super athletes so it was hard to get them to train but we had a blast riding, running andswimming together (I teach teen spin and they took that too).

My 9 year old trained the hardest though...asked me every day what we were going to do. Then broke her arm 2 days before the race. She still had to attend, we didn't have care for her. Poor kid cried through the whole thing I felt so bad. So next year we are doing Chicago together.

My race was the day after the girls (the older girls had a blast). I told them they didn't have to come to mine..up early and a lot of waiting around. But they said "No, you cheered us on now we get to cheer you on".

Prior to the race they kept asking me things like "Mom, are you sure you have your HammerGel?" and "don't forget to put your socks inside your shoes". They wanted to make sure I had enough water bottles, I think they each snuck an extra into my bag (I wondered why it was so dang heavy....) During t1 my husband and one 12 yo were outside transition. My daughter was yelling "Mom, go THAT way!" and oinjting to tthe bike out. During t2 the other 12 year old was doing the same thing, along with yelling "hurry up mom!" . (The 9 year old dozed ont he beach).

Somehow for me this wouldn't be the same if my family weren't supportive. And the beautiful thing is that we really ARE teaching them good habits this way!
