Less than 4 weeks to go! This will be my first half - I am shooting for finishing, no real time goals. I am feeling better after my 12 mile run & 50 mile bike (not together) this week. How is everyone else's training going?

Training has been going pretty well for me. This will be my 2nd 1/2 IM race ever and my first tri of this season. Minus a cpl minor aches and pains, I feel good. I haven't had enough long rides in aero, but besides that I am happy. I'm training for IM CdA, so I've been in full swing since the beginning of Nov. Getting a little antsy!

Me too!  I think there are a bunch of us that are using this as a tune-up for CdA.  Within the past 10 days, I rode a century, ran a marathon, and swam for 90 minutes straight.  So, I guess I am ready to actually do a race.

Compared to y'all I think I am behind the 8-ball in training for the half. Oh well, I hope to limp through the event anyway. Training for IronmanUk in August, but wanted to see if my winter work has paid off. Not going for any records, but would like to finish with a smile on my face

I just read your Smithfield race report - I wouldn't call it limping through when you are running a sub 6 min. mile! Great first race!

Looking forward to this race, especially since it is my first race of the year!

We rode the course 2 weekends ago and it is really pretty with lots of crossings over the lake. We rode most of the course - we did get lost Thats what happens when you don't check the map

This race comes at the beginning of my buildup for IMLP. I will have no trouble with the bike - but I am not sure how many runs over 12 miles I will get in prior to this race.

shelly123...

can you give us any insight regarding the course? It is mostly rolling hills? small hills, big hills, long hills, etc??? Would you consider it a fast course? How about the run?

Thanks,
-tim

Here is some from what I wrote the day I rode the course:

I really enjoyed the Lake Anna course. It was not that difficult, and seemed more downhill than uphill. Plenty of little rollers and 4 crossings of the Lake which meant a big downhill then a uphill on the other side. None of the hills were very steep or difficult. Hardly any of the course was completely flat which makes things interesting. This area of Virginia isnt all that nice to bikers, we had plenty of trucks that gave us little or no clearance. A little scary in that one road had a speedlimit of 55 and hardly any shoulder. We also had a few run-ins with some scary dogs that came sprinting at us and a pesky little pug that though he/she could chase us down and bite us (come-on, a Pug isn't that scary!).

Unfortunately we only did 80% of the course so I can't really speak for the whole thing. I would consider the course fast especially if it is not a windy day. The day we rode we averaged around 17mph but had some TERRIBLE headwinds on about half of the course. The part where we would get the tailwind was much more covered by trees so we didn't get the full tailwind benefit.

The run is entirely in the park which is pretty much lots of trees but mostly flat. There is one section where you back towards the lake around some cabins and that had some downhill/up hill to it and pretty much the steepest hill on the entire course is the one leaving the lake in the park.

Hope this helps.

A friend showed me a news article that says DC Mayor Fenty is doing this race. I went to the setup website and there is an A. Fenty from Washington DC entered. Thats kinda cool. I think he is doing Eagleman too.

I'm freaking out - with less than 2 weeks to go I've pulled a muscle in my upper back (right between my shoulder blades) and am laid up. If I have to I'll skip Angel's Race this weekend to rest up for Kinetic I guess I'm lucky that this is my first injury in almost 4 years of training/racing but THIS SUCKS!!

RE: Pulled Back Muscle. Give acupuncture a try. I've been amazed at the positive results that it has generated for a wide range of problems. Sorry to hear about your setback, but keep your spirits up, all of that training will help tide you through recovery.

Question for any veterans: Can you tell me about the swim start? (The Kinetic Half is my third race.) Does everyone start at once? Do people go in waves by age group? If in waves, how much time between waves? Do you start from the beach, from standing in the water or from deep water?

I did the quarter there last year (they don't have that this year) and it was my first ever Tri. It was very nice except that it rained.

The swim start was waves, grouped by expected finish time for the swim (if I recall right) you started from the beach and ran into the water. The water was lovely and calm.

Looks like we will have rain now, same as last year - oh well fingers crossed let's see what happens.

See you all there.

weds19 - 2007-04-05 12:47 PM NOTE: there is an Open Water Swim session on 4/14. see thread

Saw this on dctriclub website:

Open Water Swim and Ride has been postponed to Saturday, April 28 - 10 AM.

Water temperatures are currently at 53 degrees out at the Lake Anna State Park. I just came from there, walked through the water, and if I was a man I would be singing in high soprano!

That and the potential for rain, and air temperatures in the high 40's to
maybe mid 50's by the time we get off the bikes makes it a training day to get sick.

As a coach and athlete, I can't in good conscience promote this event.

Good news is that in two weeks we should be at least 7 degrees warmer
(water), plus the air temps should be a bit more enjoyable. I will also be
able to get the Coast Guard involved so that we can have a slightly larger swim course.

Again, I hope that this doesn't screw up your schedules!

Thanks!

the water warmed up nicely last year 66F, I wore a full wetsuit and I was very comfortable.
I then rode in Tri Shorts and a sleeveless top, again very comfortable. It rained cats and dogs. The rain stopped for the run.

they shortened the swim to 1500 meters for the 1/2 this weekend. they also added an option for a du.

i like that they gave people an out with the du, but why take a few meters off the swim? they should either leave it alone or cut the significantly. i don't see how 431 meters will make a difference.

I agree. I hope most end up swimming. A du kind of sucks.

I am going to swim, what is everybody else thinking?
