Subject: BTers doing Marine Corps Marathon this year?
Since NYC is not a possibility for me as I have other obligations that weekend, I'm thinking about doing the Marine Corps Marathon (registration opens on Wednesday).  I just need a slight push to convince me to register for the race.  What other BTers are planning on doing the Marine Corps Marathon this year?

Yes, I am already registered for this year, thanks to the early registration for active duty military.

Come join in on the fun!  It was a blast last year!

This Coastie is doing the MCM.  This'll be my first ever marathon, and from what I've heard, it is extremely well run.  Then again, if the Marines are doing it, you know it'll be done right.  Hope to see you added to the list of participants.  I'm already registered, but that's cause I'm active duty.

Go For It!

I'm registered (deferred from last year).

But my participation depends on how quickly I bounce back from knee surgery (and how soon I can get the surgery done).

It's a great race.  You'll love it!  GO FOR IT!  SIGN UP!

I'm going to do it again as part of the "2nd Anniversary Team Chippy Assault Crew" (trademark pending

But, I do hope to stay somewhere downtown this year.  Commuting back and forth to Columbia sucked last year after the race.

I'm thinking seriously about it. I want to. A race by the monuments and all that sounds really cool-and the support along the course sounds like it's great! Just a little nervous about the crowds. I ran in a race this weekend with 10,000+ people and it was ALOT-but well organized, so it went okay. How do you ever meet up with the folks that are spectating after the race? Run with a cell phone?

Where would you all suggest we stay that's close to the race? I read race reports that talked about a 2 mile walk to the start...

Thanks!!!

I'm registered - deferred from last year also.

However, I'm also in the NYC lottery and that's my first preference since it doesn't require travel and, well, it's NYC.

Either way one of these w/b my first!

I was planning on doing it, and I even changed my homepage to the registration page so I wouldn't forget.

But...according to marathonguide.com, there have been real organizational problems in the past, and the seeding is all screwed up. One runner said 16,000 people put 4:08 pace or better on their applications to get into a certain wave, but only 5,500 actually finished within that time frame. So, either there's a problem with lying on race applications, or the race is too crowded to move people along. Either way, I decided to save my money. I'm sure it's fun if you don't care about how fast you go, though.

That was one of the problems I read about. Apparently there is a family meeting area that's on a bridge or something, but some people thought it was too crowded to do any good. If I were you, I would run with a cell phone. Alternatively, you could designate a relatively deserted landmark as the meeting place.

But, I do hope to stay somewhere downtown this year.  Commuting back and forth to Columbia sucked last year after the race.

Dear CFG,

I promise to not become a psycho b-tch again at mile 19.

I'm in.  I'm using this as my back to back marathon with the NYC marathon  to qualify for the Marathon Maniacs.

If you take the Metro to the Pentagon station (nearest point to the start, it's roughly a 1 mile walk to the staging area where they have the UPS gear bag trucks.  To arrange a meeting place before the start, tell all your friends to meet at a certain UPS truck.  Usually the best strategy is to pick the one on either the far left or right of the line, since there are 2-3 dozen trucks lined up.

From the staging area, there is about a 1/3 mile walk to the start line.

The finish line is on the hill right below the Iwo Jima monument.  Proceed past that to the area where the rock bands will be playing and there will be a line at the top of the hill where they have the letters of the alphabet fastened to poles.  Pick a letter and meet your friends there at a predetermined time.

From the finish point, the closest Metro station is Arlington and it's about a 1/2 mile walk.

If you want to beat the crowds at registration packet pick-up, plan to do that chore on Friday instead of Saturday.  In 2006 we walked right in on Friday, no hassles.  On Saturday there is a "Disney World" type line to get into the building.  It took over an hour to get through the line and finally get into packet pickup.  Fair warning!

You make that promise NOW.  Let's see if you can keep it when you are out on Hains Point.

I think I'll be in again this year. I thought it was a great race and the kids had a great weekend in DC so why not.

I've done it twice and haven't had any issues with the course being too crowded. Once was in 2004 when it was capped at around 17,000 and last year there were 25K+.

Getting back to the hotel afterwards was a little rough but with 25,000 runners and all the spectators I don't know that you could expect anything else.

Being a former Marine it's the one race I HAVE to do each year

I'll probably do the Philly Marathon also.
