Age Group Rank = 80/89
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30. Had a peanut butter and jelly whole wheat bagle, 3/4 cup of coffee, water. Got the family up and drove to the race. Arrived a little after 6:00. (next time be EARLIER. Huge crowds already.)
Event warmup:

Biked for about 10 minutes. Would have gone longer but was having issues with shifting. Took it to the Bicycle Village tent and they fixed me up in a jiffy. Ran about 1/2 mile. By this time it was 7:05 (my wave went off at 7:30). Had to pee but the lines at the porta potty were WAY too long. Put my wet suit on and swam about 10-12 minutes.
Swim
  • 19m 2s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

That was the most exciting part! Started in the back on the left, but still got swam into and did some swimming into! On the first leg out, I thought I was going slow, but breathing was labored and had to slow down and calm down.
What would you do differently?:

I was very happy with my time and pace. That time includes a pretty long run up to transition. My watch time for the swim was 17:30. I didn't run all the way to transition ( I was tired!), but I will run next time.
Transition 1
  • 04m 8s
Comments:

Wasn't really rushing. Was glad to be done with the swim and was just EXCITED!!
What would you do differently?:

Had to pee. That took 2 minutes. I need to make sure I pee RIGHT before the race. Put on my jersey in T1. I think I should get a tri top to save some time. Hard to put on a jersey over a wet body. Also, took my watch off to get the wetsuit off, then forgot to put it back on.
Bike
  • 54m 50s
  • 17 miles
  • 18.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Very pleased with my time. When I train up here in the mountains, I can barely get 15 mph. I was close to 19 mph which was great for me! Everything I do up here is mountains, so I wasn't sure how I'd do on a semi flat course.
What would you do differently?:

I lost my only gel packet that I was planning on consuming before the run. Maybe take 2?
Transition 2
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

Wasn't too bad. Had to put my watch back on. I put my race belt on upside down and had to re-do it.
What would you do differently?:

Know how to put my race belt on properly the first time.
Run
  • 29m 53s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Happy with the pace. Got passed by a LOT of people! Had a small water bottle with me so I didn't have to stop at the aid stations. That's about the only place I passed people.
What would you do differently?:

Eat a gel beforehand.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked and stetched.

Event comments:

Had a great race! Looking forward to doing it again!!

Nice job with your race - sounds like you're happy with how everything went down (except the bathrooms). I agree, once you get out of the water, the last thing you're wanting to do is run up a hill to the transition area. It jacks up the heart rate pretty good.

Great race and sounds like you had a great time!

Next time just pee in your wetsuit - (most) everyone else does!

Great race!!  I agree with Alex - that's what "warming up" in the water means

Glad you had a fun race - nice job

LOL, I was thinking, heck just pee in the wetsuit!  Funny on the "warm up" thought from Julia!  Great race!

There are 2 kinds of triathletes: Those who pee in their wetsuits and those who lie about it. Time to join the club - whichever one you want!!

Sounds like you had a great time out there! Nice job

I freely admit I'm a wetsuit pee-er and it has made life way easier since I became one. You race more comfortably because you don't need to go anymore and/or you save lots of time not having to stop off for one.

Great race!!!

I tried to pee in my wetsuit but I just couldn't make it happen ... I guess it takes practice!  Sounds like you had a great race and a good time.  Me too.

Great race.  I'm with you, when I got out of the swim, I didn't feel like running up to T1 either.   I agree with everyone else, let it go in the wetsuit.
