Total Time = 1h 32m 12s
Overall Rank = 130/233
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 7/11
Pre-race routine:

Banana, yogurt, fruit grain bar for breakfast - long drive to Loveland. Set up T1, found coredump, infosteward, bootygirl
Event warmup:

Quick swim in the cold, cold lake! Found Novo in the water!
Swim
  • 23m 3s
  • 750 meters
  • 03m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

My first OW swim, ever. I started fairly well, but I was NOT prepared for the cold water at all. I'm glad I didn't polar-bear it, although some guys did. I still need to build my swim base SO much. I got a little misoriented while doing the backstroke, and had to get back on track. Fortunately, it was only about 50 meters or so.
What would you do differently?:

MUCH more swim practice.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

One word for this T1 - PAM! I'm SO glad I used a liberal amount!
What would you do differently?:

N/A
Bike
  • 39m 4s
  • 14 miles
  • 21.50 mile/hr
Comments:

Some idiot tried to pass on the inside, while leaving the park - I was forced wide right and almost dumped my bike. I caught and passed him quickly, with a sneer, and made sure he only got to view my @$$ after that! Coming into the T2, the guy right in front of me stopped short, and my right leg got ripped open by my pedal.
What would you do differently?:

Compete a little more cut-throat. I should've kept my line on that left hand turn, and made that first guy slow down. My HR was fairly high, but I probably could've taken the hills a little harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

T2 went fairly smooth, except for the blood dripping down my leg...
What would you do differently?:

Not bleed!
Run
  • 27m 19s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

My toes had become numb on the bike ride, due to the cold water from the lake, and the wind over my feet. I didn't get feeling back for a mile or so. The last mile was definitely my best, but I need to have my normal speed within the first 1/2 mile or so.
What would you do differently?:

Ride my bike during the run portion?
Post race
Warm down:

Went to the transition area to try to clean the dried blood off my leg. Grabbed a powerade, banana, and clif brownie.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inability to swim, and running off the bike.

Photos in the album section, under Fall Chill.

Event comments:

A few errors prevent me from knowing my times/rankings. I forgot to set my stopwatch before my wave started, so I couldn't really track my time. My wave was supposed to start at 9:15, and I was walking in the post-race area at 10:46, so I'm guestimating 1:30 for my time. I have to wait until Tuesday to get my actual times.

The volunteer that wrote my number on me, wrote the wrong number - Racer #44 will have like double his actual time, while I have no time, until they figure out everything. Here I was shooting for a PB, and a place in the top 3 in the Clydes, but I have no idea if I beat that 1:27 mark or not.

OK, so now I have my time 1:32:12 128/231 overall (splits won't be available until Thursday). I'm REALLY bummed now. I so wanted a top-5 in my group (since I knew I didn't get a top-3 placing). It'll be some good fuel for when I get training again, but right now it burns. All I can say is this has been quite the learning season; I'll be a lot better next season.

10/1 - just got my split times. My transition times are fine, and my bike split was very good for only having a week to practice on my new bike. I'm very happy that my run was so much better than my first tri, but I still need to pick up the pace here (more intervals and hills!) My swim sucked, but I don't think I could've done much better without any OW preparatory work. I don't know where the other 2 people came in, but I got bumped back in the standings of my division! THIS really makes me mad. I had heard grumblings about the way they timed previous races out there, and now I'm starting to understand. For instance, there's a person ranked 125 overall - ALL of my splits are faster than him, but his overall time is faster, how the heck does that happen? By my count, I beat this guy by over a full minute!

Kept HR above 155 - which was my goal. However, I still need more speed coming off the bike. OK, this surprised me. I didn't think I kept that fast of a pace. I did wear my HRM for this, so I was ablt to push myself somewhat.

dude - you are in MY top 3......

Great to finally meet you- your posts and PMs and inspirations have really helped motivate and amuse me! I remember back to the first contact - right after my cortisone injection..... ouch! You scared me into swimming the next day!

Let's get a ride or something in sometime before waiting for the gravel pit to open again. Did you keep my cell from a PM?
Did Lynn run that 1/2mar? Let us know how she did!

Wow!!! You did it!!

I'll bet you were thanking the high heavens for your wetsuit...sounds like the water was freezing...did they tell you the temperature???

It is enormously frustrating when cyclists get in your way and ruin your plan...I had some bozos doing stupid things during the K-Town tri bike course (blocking, not cycling in a straight line) and I lost time

Thanks for the album pictures...they're great

Way to sacrifice the body, Joe! You're a beast!

It was great to meet you and I'm sorry I didn't have the opportunity to get lubed up by you. ;-) So, when's our CO BT get-together?

Congrats on your race.  Don't worry about your number.  Your timing chip will have your final results.  It was fun to see all of the racers on such a fantastic day in Colorado.  I will race next year.  Way to go.

It's not a good race unless blood is spilled!

I've managed some type of injury at every race so far. Heh. Mostly minor bruises, or slight blisters on the feet, never had blood running down my leg though.

If you hit 1:30 that's awsome!

That sucks about the mixup with you race number It's annoying to try to make a specific time goal and then have them mess up with the timing. I'm sure you did great though - you probably smoked everyone on the bike.

It was great to hang out with you guys, and thanks for buttering us all up with the Pam!

Actually, I gave up drinking a long time ago (had a little issue with it - got drunk and got married.)  Now I'm single and sober!

However, I do feel like a seasoned veteran now that I've sacrificed some blood on the course!  I took it in stride (HA HA!  The pedal gouged my leg at the T2 dismount, so I really did take it in stride!)  And I ran, with blood dripping down my leg!

Great race Joe, and with that blood running down your leg, you must have looked like a grizzled ironman veteran!  Well, despite the timing mixups, it still sounds like ya had fun!

Joe,

You mean the only way I'm going to get you to marry me is if I slip you a vodka tonic?

Great race Joe you rock. It was so good to meet you. I'm so proud of you. Next year. It's Oly's all the way! Me and you and Mary. Woo Hoo. Kickin' butt and taking names.

Hey Joe,
Great race, horriable timing system. I came in 4th in the CA division. For some reason they forgot to put me in the class even though I signed up that way?? It wouild be nice to meet some of you next season, I look forward to the Spring Chill, if it happens?
Cheers,
Ryan
