Subject: Goggles - tinted or clear ?
My TYR goggles broke at the beach this weekend....

I went to their web site and they have some smoked ones I like a lot.

I plan on doing some OWS's soon but am mostly in the pool for now, with an occassional swim at the lake.

Are the tinted/smoked goggles too dark for pool ? I assume not.

My eyes are pretty sensitive with regards to light, koreso than most.

Thanks for any feedback.

I had the same question some time ago and read somewhere that it is recommended to use clear goggles because a lot of OWS are a little murkey AND you may be sighting a small or far away object to keep your course. The clear goggles make that easier.

I'm sure there are opinions to the contrary, if the OWS is clear and it is very sunny out, they may say go smoked.

SO - I have both, and bring both to the race (it's good to bring a spare anyway). BUT, I chose to only use clear in every instance and never had a problem.

BTW - I have a sensitivity to light as well and I'm almost always squinting.....

Good luck and let us know what you chose!

Probably should go in the Gear section, but the answer is..... it depends on the time of year, conditions, etc.

If it's overcast, I go clear.  If it's sunny, I use tinted.

If it's winter, I use clear at 6:30 masters cuz it's dark.  Summer I use clear.

I have one of each. It really makes a difference, having tinted goggles on a sunny day -- 8 AM swim start means you're occasionally sighting DIRECTLY into the sun.

I've got the tinted and the blue Tyr Technoflex 2.0s:

I have both the blue and the smoke X-Sight from TYR.  I've always used the blue indoors and have used the smoke for outside.  The blue are fantastic!  Great vision and very comfortable.

I've never been able to get the smoke ones to seal properly though.  I can't understand why.  One time they did eventually seal, but that was after several hundred aggravating yards in La Jolla Cove.  Because of this, I've stopped using the smoked ones all together.

I have smoke-tinted Speedo optical goggles and they are great in the pool. Definitely not too dark or anything.

What he said !!

I've found that swimming during daylight hours I am invariably sighting into the sun. I finally bought a tinted set of Aquasphere Kaiman goggles yesterday and can't wait to use them in the pool and the reservoirs where I swim.

Btw, I swim in two reservoirs with very clean water, but can't see a damn thing under me!

I have both, plus blue. I have the Tyr Socket Rockets in smoke and they're not too dark. Actually, at one of my races when it was clear and sunny, I was wishing I had something darker. As someone mentioned, it's hard to sight when the sun is directly in your face. I like the blue ones too but they are hard to use while sighting if the buoys in a race are yellow. (this happened to me) I use all of them at the indoor pool, depends what I feel like wearing. Plus, my socket rockets were only $6 so I can afford to have many pairs in different colors.

I love my goggles by Element. First picked them up at St. Anthony's tri expo in April - they come in different lens colors, for low light, bright light, etc. They are my new favorite ones. Check em out!

I keep a range of goggles on hand, clear, smoke, orange, and blue.

For races, I usually use my Speedo Vanquisher (blue) goggles.  They're dark enough to knock out lots of direct sun, but not too bad in murky water.  Some say that yellow/orange bouys are hard to see with blue lenses, but I haven't noticed a problem.  The orange goggles work pretty well on overcast days with murky water.  (Might have something to do with evening out the intensity between in/out of the water.)  I use clear and smoke lenses in the pool primarily, where the water is clear and lighting somewhat controlled.

I have clear, blue and smoked Tyr goggles and always wind up wearing the smoked one.  They just seem better for some reason especially during open water swims.

Clear for OWS.  Too hard to see if not.  Don't worry about the sun, you won't spend much time facing it.

If you want practice pair, smoke for pool.  Just cooler anyway.

I have had blue for awhile and just bought clear a few days before my race last weekend(ows).  It was kind of cloudy, but I didn't want to "try anything new on race day", so I went with blue.  Mistake!  I now am a firm believer in:  tinted if it's sunny, clear if anything but.

I always use tinted because I am more or less blind if there is anything more than a little bit of light. I always have to squint if it is sunny outside and don't have sunglasses on so I really have sensitive eyes.

I have Tyr X-sight in smoke and mirrored.  I use the smoke ones for everything except racing on sunny days.  Sunny days I use the mirrored and love them, especially on the lake with the glare.

I have one of each.  I love blue goggles for indoors, but they don't work for me in murky open water.  There wasn't enough contrast between them and the buoys in a race and that made sighting very difficult.  I use either clear or smoke depending on how sunny it is that day.  Both work very well for me.
