Greenwood, South Carolina
United States
set-up.inc
Total Time = 5h 43m 32s
Overall Rank = 170/500
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5am and hearded the kids and wife into the van for the trek out to Lake Greenwood.
Event warmup:

None really, I didn't feel like climbing into the water and then getting out into the cold air.
Swim
  • 38m 28s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

The buoys were hard to see, and there was a chop due to the wind. I also thought that the swim was a bit long since I am normally 33-34ish in a HIM swim.
What would you do differently?:

Go to the pool and train. I have swam twice since Louisville.
Transition 1
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

I didn't like the fact that our spots were not numbered, but rather a free for all on each rack. I had a guy with a mountain bike next to me and his junk was spread out everywhere.
Bike
  • 2h 53m 58s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.31 mile/hr
Comments:

My hip flexor, knee and ITBS has prevented me from training as much as I would have liked for this race. I have ridden my bike 3 or 4 times since Louisville, so I wasn't at 100% for this race by any means. I borrowed a disk wheel from a friend of mine which was great until the wind got strong and almost blew me across the road. Effort was good, although I had to remind myself a few times that I was here to "participate" and not race. It was a good course, and I would definitely do this race again next year.
What would you do differently?:

Prepare a little better for the race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

T2 was good.
Run
  • 2h 08m 12s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I liked this run alot. I went out at a 7:45 pace, but again had to remind myself that I was just "participating" and not racing. Knee was sore pretty much right off the bat, but it wasn't too terribly bad. I really enjoyed getting to see all of the NAMC folks on the course.
What would you do differently?:

Not be injured?
Post race
Warm down:

The hill at the finish line was just wrong. I had a gatorade and some water, and a beer at the NAMC tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injury, lack of focused training. The interesting thing is that I was right on my Ironman pace the entire day, so my training in that respect was spot on. My lack of speed was a result of not training in the higher substrates that I usually race in for the HIM distance.

Event comments:

I really liked this course and I plan to do it again next year. I didn't like the fact that they didn't have enough port-o-potties or food and water available for spectators.

I think the mountain bike next to you was "Big Blue"... John just put it there to mess with you .  He's like that, you know...

Nice job out there yesterday.  Congratulations on your "not racing" race time!!!

Awesome job!! We need to have a BT sign at these races so I can start putting faces to names

I know this mountain bike. He passed me at about mile 41. UGHHH. I didn't have a disc wheel and was getting pushed around by the wind.

You did so great though to just come out and wing it and still finish in 5:45. Someday I'll get there...
