Well hopefully.  Don't post her much, but just felt like writing.

I've dipped consistantly for 17 years and over the past few years have progressed to going through 4 cans a day.  That's not a typo or missed key, yes 4 cans a day at $5.00-5.50 a can.  If you ever seen that comedian's ( I can't remember his name) bit about how much dope he smoked and how much he loved it, well that's me just with chewing tobacco.  I really love to dip, I mean I REALLY love to dip.  About a month ago I kinda started thinking maybe I need to quit, this was starting to get a little out of hand.  I literally plan my day and workouts on when around when I will be able to get the next wad of sweet delicious dirt in my mouth.

It was probably my 3.5 year old daughter asking me what it was that set my into this downward spiral of deciding to quit, also have another one due in February.  Then last weekend I went to a football game with a friend of mine that basicly had been dipping as long as I have.  On the way he told me about a new medication he was taking and had not dipped in 8 weeks, completely cut his urges after getting on the medicine for 10 days.  Something that sounded Celtic or reminded me of sitting around a fire, I had a few cool pops and couldn't remember.  Finally figured out it was called Chantix and called my doctor a week ago today to get a script.  You take the medication for a week (little white pills), gradually increasing the dose until the 8th day and then you quit.  I have taken my first week's worth and now I get to take a little blue pill from Pfizer twice a day for the next 3 months.  Not exactly what I thought my first experience with their little blue pill would be, but thems the breaks I guess.

Where am I going with this? I really don't know.  Hopefully the delicious brown nectar that I have in my mouth right now will be the last time I EVER put cancer dirt into my mouth again.  I just needed to write and put things down for me but in a semi public way and have some accountability for myself. I know it sounds wierd, but I'm wierd and from Alabama, so I've got that going for me.

To paraphrase Dr. King, "Tomorrow I quit. Tomorrow I quit. Thank God almighty, tomorrow I quit."

Good luck!

Yeah, kids will change your life and if you're smart you'll let them change it for the better.  Anyone who drank with me from 1984-2004 wouldn't believe it if they saw me on the weekends now.  You can do it man, it's all about the kids.

Come back here for support.  You've already taken a huge step by posting this cuz we'll keep track of you now.  Good luck.

Uh Oh... You've done it now... you may as well have put it up on the CoJ billboard.

We will watch you, encourage you, scare you, spook you, disturb you and hopefully make you laugh along the way.

An old boy friend of mine used to dip. Can tell you first hand, it's no delicious sweet nectar from this end. Just sayin'

Your wife must be thrilled. Laughing

Good to hear. I work for the "little blue pill" company and used to smoke (he bummed from me at the bar on Fridays) with the chemist who synthesized the discovery lot of the molecule. He and I now occasionally OWS together. I quit with the patch (that's all you had back then) and it was really hard. I'd have killed someone if I didn't have it; I was miserably bi+chy.

It's an interesting molecule: It "partially blocks" the nicotine receptors in the brain. That's a tough problem, usually you either fully agonize (ramp up) or antagonize (shut down) a receptor. "Partially" anatagonizing is tricky. In this case, you want to basically tell the receptor that nicotine doesn't give any benefit. Make it neutral. Every other approach just delivers nicotine via a different route.

I understand the key to making it work is support and counseling. Not to beat yourself up if you slip, but get back off the demon ASAP.

Congrats; I had cravings for a long time before they completely subsided. You'll make it. It sounds as if you want to bad enough. You're tougher than this.

Nice job man.  Seriously nice!

Here is some advice that applies in many contexts...

Just start swallowing instead of spitting and the allure fades quicly

Good luck.  Quitting chewing was the hardest thing I have ever done.  Started chewing in 1986.  Decided to quit in 1991 when I got married.  Hid it from my wife for the next 7 years (she knew) tried quitting off and on.  Finally kicked it for good in 1998.  9 years clean and I still have occational dreams and cravings for it.  The only advise I have for you is quit for yourself.  I tried quitting for my wife and kids but it never really stuck until I decided that it was what I really wanted to do.

I have quit smoking a couple of times

smoked for 15 years
quit for 5 years
cheated off and on for 2 years
quit for almost 6 years now (March 2)

The thing to remember is that this is a true addiction. You can NEVER, EVER dip again, not even once, not ever.

good luck

Good luck man!  Thanks for sharing.  Get in the mindset that this is a war.  You vs. the focking dirty filthy disgusting habit (yea, that's what the rest of the world thinks, sorry to say).

You will have cravings.  Breathe deep and fight...each will get shorter and the space between cravings will get bigger, like waves.  Never dip again, don't let your addicted brain tell you it's OK.

That day will come when the little "Nekkid kid" you're chasing around has kids of her own.  Please tell me you want to be around to see that.

You're doing the right thing and you know it.  Now don't let us down...or them.

Thanks everybody.  I was just babbling away and didn't expect this, I really appreciate it.  The hard part right now is this is all I can think about.  I'm not really craving, it's just so ingrained in what I do every day.

Pitt, the way you describe how Chantix works is pretty good.  The last few days it was like I didn't get much feeling out of a dip, hard to describe that.

I hope you succeed!

My first time chewing - I was a freshman in H.S. (over 25 years ago) and bought AppleJack (the loose leaf cr*p).  Yep, I went right to the hard stuff.  I felt very ill and threw up big time later that day.  I never chewed again, and glad that it taught me a lesson!

Way to go!   You'll get lots of support here.  And whoever said it earlier is right.  You have to want to do this for you, not anybody else.  I know you can do it!

Hope you succeed with quitting.  Having seen numerous friends/coworkers try to quit (smoking) I can see that it is a tough challenge.  Take it one day at a time, maybe post in your training log how many days you've gone without and this will inspire you to keep at it.

As a current cancer patient, I can assure you that this is a wise decision.

"Just the thought turns my stomach"

I tend to have that effect on people, thanks.  Unfortunately, I have not dipped since midnight on Monday.  I sure do miss it.  I think it misses me too.

Dead I am the dog, hound of hell you cry
