I hit a new "PR" on the bike yesterday, up to 38.6 MPH. Felt reasonably stable, but a little sketchy getting passed by cars on a country road at that speed.

Anyone get up to a ridiculously high speed before? I keep thinking of watching the TDF this year, on the first big mountain stage with LA and the Italian guy, when Ligget kept saying one year they came down the same hill LA was climbing and some guy hit 100 KPH! That takes some balls (or lack of brains)!

46 mph coming down Loveland Pass here in Colorado. I wanted to go faster, but cars got in my way!

The first time I ever did a century -which was a very big deal for me- we got to a big-ass hill towards the end of our ride. Both DH and I were extremely disheartened, looking up at it. But we did get to come down the other side and hit somewhere around 38 mph. I don't remember exactly. We wanted to go back up the hill, just so e could do it again. But calmer heads prevailed.

35 mph down a winding hill in the Adirondacks.  The speed limit for cars is 25.

Up to 50 mph in Fort Davis. Scared the living daylights out of me! At that speed, all it takes is a pebble in the road to send you hurdling down the mountain. I started applying the breaks after that, so perhaps I could have gone faster. You have to be careful about breaking hard down a steep hill. I was taught to "feather" my brakes because if you clamp on the brakes you run the risk of heating up your rims which can cause your tube to explode, as was seen in the TDF...not a good deal. We have some hills here in East Texas where we can hit 40-45 mph pretty easy. I also did a race in Lago Vista which had an extremely steep downhill where I hit 44 mph breaking all the way down.

I've hit mid-40's pretty regularly, all on downhills of course. It's quite a rush. Maybe I'm just too dumb to be scared.

Usually running out of road so I feel like I could go faster, but have to slow down to make turns at the bottom.

Fastest on a flat is about 30mph, but can't really hold that for any duration of time yet, as I have to go totally anaerobic to reach that.

I can get up to 30-35 down the long bridges on my MTB depending on the wind. It gets too crazy for me, not enough Rake and Trail for those speeds.

80 Kmph (50mph) going down a monster hill in my area.  What a "rush"!  I only wish that the hill were longer and that there weren't a stop sign at the bottom of it ... it sort of cuts down on the speed as I am still accelerating by the time I get there but I have to slow down and stop!

My top speed was "only" 49.8mph and man was I mad when I saw that. I so wanted to get it up to 50 but I ran out of downhill....

My coach sees me doing this and as he catches me on EVERY uphill he says "man you got some b@lls..." I think to myself....nah, I just haven't had a huge wreck on my bike yet!

I hope that he and I do that ride again next year because I hope to break my PSR (personal speed record) and go 55-60mph...I just gotta be sure to not show how excited I am about doing it in front of Joanna. For some reason she calls going that fast on a bike "stupid." Go figure.

47 mph is my PB. I usually hit 38 mph on a long decent when I bike my regular route.

I reached 47.6 MPH going down "Suicide Hill" during this years MS150. I hope to beat that next year. I have gone 29.8 MPH of my own power on a long flat road, but have not been able to get to 30 MPH (hey, there is another goal, must go 30 MPH or faster).

Tri-Bike on the road -- 42.6mph downhill but ran out of road to try faster speeds. Felt very stable and was thrilled!!

MTB on gravel fire road -- 39.5mph downhill (with turns) at Kamakaze run at Mammoth Mtn. Scared to death but didn't crash. One friend hit 44mph but crashed in a turn, another friend rode her brakes to go slower.... she melted her rear tube by the time she reached the bottom of the run.

37 mph and I was scared to death... I had my rear brake engaged, so I probably could have gone faster... It took every ounce of concentration, strength and courage for me not to CRY!!! I was completely scared.

50.2 mph before I lost nerve and feathered the brakes. Not a whole lot of confidence in those skinny little tires.

47 in the Texas State Tri.  Same speed as the car travelling 3 feet from me... my internal dialog went something like this: On your right, on your right, on your right, on your right.
