Got up to 58 MPH going down a mountain in Kirkwood, CA. It took me 12 hours to bike up the mountain but only about 60 minutes to bike down.

I hit 62mph during my first tri in aero position last August.  I'm going to repeat the race next weekend (26th).  We'll see if my new tri bike is faster than my old road bike!

44mph going down Keller Rd. in Oakland, tucked and peddling like mad on my MTB. The road is wide, smooth, and without much traffic.

Fastest I've been is 48.4 and the bike felt fine, I just ran out of road.

Watching the TdF on British Eurosport this July one of the commentators (Sean Kelly) said that he once reached 118kph (74mph).  That's just crazy!

43 MPH during Lake Stevens 70.3 back in July.   Had a curve at the bottom so I got to feel some G Force.   My Orbea has spooky handling at that speed.

Around 62mph on a downhill on the road bike.

42 mph in a flat sprint in a road race.

48 mph in a mountain bike race (my first x-country mtb race ever had some really long fire roads we went on).

Scariest?? By far the 48 mph on the mtb!! No skills and a rigid frame ...... no suspension at all.

piggpen35 - 2004-11-13 5:32 PM I was pulled over by the county sherrif for doing 48 in a 35 on Mile Hill Rd. With a name like that you know it is a fun road to ride, bit only ine one direction. He didnt write me a ticket, but he did encourage me to slow down before I kill myself! He was not nearly as impressed that I was able to catch and over take him as I was I guess! When I got home and told my wife what I thought was a rather funny story she was ready to kill me! Something about having to be around for 18 more years to raise my daughter. Now I just dont tell her when I go fast. The one advantage to being a clydsdale is the decents!

Pulled over by the sheriff!!  I always wondered if anyone had been stopped for speeding on a bike!!!  That's funny :-)

48 mph, no aerobars.  I keep shooting for 50 but run out of hill too quickly.

The fastest I regually hit is around 80km/h (just under 50mph.) It seems fast, but then I remember that the downhill mountain bike racers at Whistler hit 90km/h, and they are moving over dirt, rocks, and roots. I think the term is "scary fast." :-)

There's plenty of long hills, and a few really steep and short hills, but not a lot of long steep hills around here, so I don't get to play in the over-80 zone much.

Recently only 37mph down a little hill. As a teenager I remember getting 55mph down a very big hill on my old concord ten speed. I'm curious to see when I would start hitting the breaks. I would willingly get my motorcycle up to 120mph, but that was before I put it down a few times.

46.7 on my last tri. I'll be doing that tri next year, and I'll have a bike that is about 150% more aerodynamic then so we will see how that goes!

My brother-in-law passes me without even trying on hills because he's one of those skinny annoying people that bike riders are supposed to look like. I pass him without even trying going down the other side because I'm about ten pounds overweight. Fastest on the way down (feathering so that he wouldn't feel too bad) 46 mph...I love gravity.

I made 51 here is SW Ohio.  We do have large hills.  full aero and all.  The best is when I get to fly by the guys I ride with.  They kill me on the uphills since I outweigh them by 40-50 pounds, but I own the downhill.

I have a client that purchased a $6K Cannondale tandem bike to take to WV and try and break 70 with another person.  Now that I think is crazy.

rkreuser - 2004-11-14 10:17 PMEditorial note: Same hill, different guy (Jim Scorse) went 67.6 mph down the same hill...I thought he was drafting the TGV, but it turned out he drafted a car for 3/4 mile, then three other guys pulled hard down the hill for him, slingshotting him down the steepest part of the hill (about 19%). We even checked his cyclometer to make sure he wasn't using 650s on the bike but the cyclometer calculating based on 700s. And the French doping agency cleared him, too. Ohmigod. Check it out at http://www.highlandercycletour.com/tour_highlights.htm

67.6mph!!!! That is an outrageous speed! I did just under 65kph (40mph) today descending Oliver's Hill, a local short rise south of Melbourne (grade is about 8%) and thought I was doing great!

For me it's 49.7 on a long 6% grade. I was with my brother who had 65mph as max speed on his computer (he always goes down 7 to 10% faster than me but it's a 13% there...). We were astouned and I'd like to do it again just to make sure his computer didn't tilt on the descend... That's gonna be next year probably as the hill is not in my area...

I think it would be suicide to be on the aerobars at such a speed.... (at least for me!).

The fastest I've gone was 67 kph. I routinely get up into that range on the hills on my longer ride route, but above 60 kph the tears are sheeting out of my eyes so bad I can't see a thing. This is with bike glasses on. As a result Ive learned to regulate my speed at the top of the hill so that I only get up to about 60 (most of the time , speed is fun!)

My PB is 53.4 in the North Georgia Mountains (same place the Tour de Georgia rides).  I honestly didn't think my bike was going to hold together.  I just tucked in and zipped down the hill.  It was great...had about a 3 mile decent.  The car behind us passed at the bottom, told us that we were crazy but that it was really entertaining to watch!!

I can regularly get low 40's on a majority of hills in town.
