I can't handle the suspense any longer... when do they get posted/emailed???  The first lotto drawing is today, so I figure the notices must get sent out today, no?

for some reason I think they post them at 7pm PCT - nothing on their web site yet....
Last year I remember getting notification right before I went to sleep and not being able to sleep b/c I was so shocked I got picked.

Yeah... I'm waiting as well. I did this race last year for first time (after 3 attempts) and I had a horrible race. I really hope I get picked (again) this year. I need to get my revenge on “The Rock”. I’m not sure if you’ve done this race or not… but here are a couple of (newbie) mistakes I made last year:

1. I didn't drop my 2 transition bags off in the right place (you have 2 transition bags you need to prepare). I had to do the .5 mil run after the swim in my bare feet… most of it is on gravel. (NOT RECOMMENDED!);

2. The boat is crazy... after the pros go… everyone starts to jump in. I didn't position myself very well and went 2 groups after my age group was called;

3. A portion of the run is on the beach (before the sand steps); my shoes were all open mesh in the front and I had A LOT of sand in my shoes. You can dump most of it out at the top of the steps... but still uncomfortable for the rest of the race; and last but not least

4. My chain popped trying to change gears going up one of the killer hills. Seriously... some of those climbs are straight-up. I saw a few people walking their bikes up them. I would train 2x as hard on the bike this go-round.

It's crazy that we're all hoping to all get tortured again!!!! This race was the hardest I've ever done in my 3 years of doing TRIs... but I loved every minute of it!!!!

Let me know if you get picked!!!!

Yay!!!  I got in!!!!!  I can't believe it!  I definitely appreciate the newbie tips - I'm going to start researching the race and looking into some good hills training.  Any and all tips are much appreciated.  I'll start looking at past Alcatraz threads, I suppose.  I CAN'T WAIT!

There's still a chance!!  The next lottery drawing is Feb. 1, and if you entered in time for yesterday's drawing, you're already in the pot for the next one.  So don't lose hope just yet!

I'm in -but through qualifying. See you all there. Rstocks -if you don't get in through the random drawing you should go down and do the Florida's Great Escape in March -I bet you could qualify that way.

Same here, this will be my first time. It's a long drive for me up to SF, but I've heard some good things about this race so I think it's worth it.

Sounds like a crazy race.

Did I get this all goofed up or wasn't the December drawing limited to those who had participated in the event previously?

At least that is what I am hoping for as I reeeeallllly want to do it this year

I'M IN, but I don't think I can do the race anymore.    I wish I could give my lottery slot to one of you guys!  Good luck with the next drawing!

Rookie Alcatri member here - can anybody share with me their swim training plans. I have an olympic distance tri in the works for May but wonder how far I should actually swim in training at one time. I can currently do 100M without cause for concern (apparently the 1.5M swim can turn out to be 2M pretty easy b/c of the currents).

Thanks

Hi,

Wanted a veteran opinion here since I only have done one tri (oly) and my swimming still sucks...cycling is decent, running is decent (do marathons so have kept up the running). I go into Alcatraz for the second yr in a row through the lotto (declined for '07). A friend actually entered me as a joke since I say I never win anything! Would it be more crazy to turn down the entry or more crazy to think I can improve my swimming by that time? Thanks!

I started training from SCRATCH this time last year - started with 3x75 in the pool and worked my way up to over 1 mile nonstop in time for the race. My husband was in the same situation and he finished the swim - and the tri - without any problems.
