Subject: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED

Welcome to the Manatees. We are all mentors and mentees, which sounds like manatees--hence our name. Some iteration of this group has been going on for over 12 seasons and I've lost track of what season we are in! All experience levels and goals welcome.

We have not-yet-triathletes, multiple-iron finishers, runners, bikers and swimming specialists. We range from slow to fast, and beginner to veteran, but most of us are somewhere in the middle of all that. Our training philosophies, gear, objectives and methods are similarly varied. We are very committed to health and to each other. We are an extremely supportive and active group, as Janyne likes to say, inactive Manatees make us sad. Please check in (even to admit you're procrastinating or overwhelmed) and be passionate. Keeping up your training log here on BT and opening it to other group members is mandatory. This helps us all connect through messages such as Inspires and PM's, which some of us do on a regular basis. (If you don't know how, we'll help you). We have members that have been here a while and really know how this site works. We are ready and willing to help you navigate through the wealth of resources found on BT and elsewhere. We use a variety of other tools, such as Strava, Instagram, and other Social Media sites to encourage, support, and get to know each other better. We believe the journey is the reward, and look forward to having you as a fellow traveler and a friend.

As always, any former Manatees are welcome at any time. To join, please respond to this message and include (or later add) your bio.

Bio: Please add information from the format below and/or whatever you'd like to share.

NAME: What you're actually called in the real world.

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook, Twitter, or whatever name/handle you use from any other social media site if you'd like us to follow along.

STORY: Who you are, why you want to do endurance/multisport, any athletic background

FAMILY STATUS: Family situation (single/partnered/family/pets, especially pets)

CURRENT TRAINING: If/how you have been training so far

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: If any have been chosen or are on the possibilities list.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: What do you hope to get out of this?

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: Why do you want to join this group?

Hi

I'm Tom 40 years old and live in Congleton England which is 25 miles South of Manchester. I am married with two kids who are 7 and 5.

I did my first triathlon nearly two years ago after 18 years of being inactive, easting and drinking too much! last year was a right off as got knocked off my bike and broke my collarbone which put paid to the races I had planned, seemed to lose incentive to train as much as I should and year trailed off. I did join a running club which is great fun but this trailed off again after the summer but running again now and once I can run 6 miles comfortably again I will be back out with them every Tuesday.

This year plan to do my first 70.3 and a couple of olympic distance races.

I love being a Manatee as I learn lots from the group and its always good to hear other peoples stories.

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: https://www.facebook.com/cdban66https://twitter.com/CDBanhttps://www.instagram.com/cdban66/https://www.strava.com/athletes/2116063,

STORY: I had been somewhat athletic in High School, playing soccer, beach volleyball and basketball, but that was a long time ago. Marriage, two children, business ownership, and the general busyness of life just got in the way.  A number of years back I began going to the gym, lifting weights and such.  Then, in late July, 2010, we had a family weight loss challenge. In order to lose weight (BTW, I did win the challenge), I began running.  DD2 suggested we run a race at Walt Disney World, so I began to prep for that and my older sister joined in as well.  Before that race had happened, I began looking for more challenge/diversity, since I was enjoying the training.  I had a friend who had been in tri’s a while back, he gave me his old bike and it grew from there.  I have added in a mtb and took a bike mechanic class, since that appears to be the side of this I enjoy the most.

STATUS: I am a 6’3”, 50+ yr old male and I've been married for nearly 30 years. I have 2 girls, both in their 20’s.  My wife, Ann or TW(THE Wife), is the most wonderful person a man could have in his life and has been very supportive of this addition to my lifestyle.  Currently working on MTB improvements.

CURRENT TRAINING: I have found that I really enjoy trail running and bike riding. Currently focused on the MTB. I hope to add running back into the mix after the middle of January. Also, I have struggled to consistently do the stretching/recovery work that seems to help so much.

LAST YEAR: Not many positives came out of racing or training in 2017, although that which didn’t kill me has only made me stronger.

2017 races: The year started on the MTB, with a 40 miler in January. It was all downhill from there, with less training, less racing and a PF flareup in the summer.

2018 races: This year starts like last year, but I am soloing the 40 this year and hope to take major time off last year. I still haven't gotten to an Xterra event, but maybe this is the year.

BODY COMP:  I am about to hit 230 (woohoo, holidays!), with a goal weight of 210+/-.

WHAT WOULD MAKE ME A GOOD MANATEE: I am not the fastest, but I am supportive, upbeat, and would like to be in better shape, not just for triathlon, but for life. I have a bit of bike knowledge and a wealth of knowledge learned the hard way.  I read logs for info, laughs, and motivation, post a bit and you will likely receive an "Inspire" or 2 from me every now and again.

STORY: Athletic growing up, played soccer, basketball, volleyball, track and field, etc etc.  Went to school, started a career.  Played soccer and hockey for a few years, but put on a few pounds.  Always wanted to run a marathon but have bad ankles and knees so didn't think I could ever do it.  Watched Biggest Loser faithfully for years and finally decided if the contestants on the show could finish one, I certainly could.  Started training, had some foot problems so was derailed from my first choice.  Got orthotics, started training again and ran my first marathon on 10/10/10.  Continued running, but had also always wanted to do an Ironman (heard about IM Canada the first year it happened--I was 10--and my first though was 'they are crazy' and my second though was 'I want to do that one day').  Started swim training in fall 2011 and did my first sprint in 2012.  Several sprints that year and Calgary 70.3 in the summer.  Since then 2 IM (Canada '14 and Copenhagen '15) and 7 HIM/Half Iron distance.  Currently training for IM #3

FAMILY STATUS: Partnered 10+ years, 4 dogs, 2 cats (I am a vet tech, partner is a dog trainer/agility competitor)

CURRENT TRAINING: For IM Santa Rosa in May 2018

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: IM Santa Rosa, possibly Coeur D'Alene 70.3.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Be able to eat some bad food and drink some beers and not gain weight mostly .  I do like the community of people and I like to challenge myself.

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I like to be able to pass along some knowledge that I have picked up along the way.  Mostly about mental toughness and the fact that if we stop telling ourselves we can't, we can.  I don't post a ton, but read all posts and chime in now and again.  I love seeing people achieve their goals and dreams (Footloose (the new version) just made me cry...)

Name: Ann-Marie, AM/AMD, HandsStory: I’ve been active my whole life, but avoided running like the plague. When I’d see people running in the rain or hear them talk about getting up early to run, I’d laugh at them. Now I am them! I did my first triathlon in 2010. Sprints mainly at first, then. Few HIM and then I ventured into the IM this (2017) year at Louisville. It did not go as planned, so my redemption race is 2018 Chattanooga. Family: Single with the cutest puppy (Teddy the wire hair pointing griffon) since my last puppy! 2018 races: Valley of the Lillies HM in April, Lake Logan HIM, IM Chattanooga. I’m kind of stalking Janyne!Goals: like every year, don’t get injured and enjoy it all! So far, part 1 has been elusive, but I’ve pretty much been on point for the enjoyment goal! Though, it’d be even better sans injury!!What makes me a good manatee: I try to be active in the forum and am pretty good with inspires.

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: Nope

STORY: I'm a long-time runner (since age 10) who didn't take up tri until age 41 while teaching at an international school in Vietnam. It started with joining a master's swim club as cross-training, and morphed into mainly doing triathlons at distances up to and including half-ironman. I have a strong background in running (did a 2:43 marathon long, long ago!) and, to a lesser extent, swimming (HS and age-group clubs); biking, not so much!

FAMILY STATUS: Single; two fur children (cats) in Saigon--Smudgee and Tomoko. My parents moved from Oregon to Idaho in September and adopted a new kitty, Shelby, just before Christmas. Sadly (I'm leaving on Wednesday for Vietnam) she seems to have bonded most strongly with me!

CURRENT TRAINING: Kind of an unusual situation right now. I'm planning to do a HIM (Challenge Wanaka in New Zealand) in mid-February, much earlier than I normally would do one. It's been on my bucket list since I started tri. So I haven't taken as much of a break from swim or bike training as I usually do. I missed nearly four months of running this past fall with a misdiagnosed injury that has turned out to be Morton's neuroma (basically, a nerve irritation that makes my toe and the bottom of my foot hurt), and am slowly getting back to it. Up to nearly an hour of total running right now. Things are a lot better, but I have lost a lot of run fitness, and each time I move up the time/distance I seem to need a week or so until I can do it without anything hurting, so not sure I'll be able to do all of the run at Wanaka--there may be some run-walk. Right now running about 3X a week for 50 minutes total each time; biking about 5-6 hours a week (total), and swimming 8-9K a week.

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: I doubt I will sign up for anything until after Challenge Wanaka. If all continues to go well, probably one or two other HIM (Vietnam and/or Calgary) and maybe some shorter local events. Toying with the idea of a late summer or early fall IM. That would depend on getting/staying healthy and being able to handle more running.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Camaraderie--in Saigon there are very, very few triathletes and really only one that I see socially on a regular basis (until a few years ago there were often none). My location and work hours mean that almost all my training during the school year is solo. It gets lonely!

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I enjoy hearing about others' adventures and looking at cute fur kid pics. I have been in endurance sports (distance running, swimming) for almost 40 years so I am happy to share any experience (usually as an example of what not to do!) that might be useful to others. I am always happy to host any visitors to Saigon.

Hoping Shelby is okay. She's on my bed washing her tummy right now. Only 9 PM and so far just a few volleys. We've been warned that the locals like to fire their rifles to ring in the New Year--hoping this is just urban legend or something that people tell transplants from Oregon to scare them off.

Happy New Year Chris

My name is Michelle and I'd like to join your Manatee mentoring group. Love manatees and other sea, air and land creatures, so the name draws me in, even though it has nothing to do with manatees... Anyway

My name is Michelle, I'm female and will be turning 60 in 2018! (So, it's a big year for me to do some exciting and challenging stuff).
I recently retired, so I also have very few excuses as to why I can't do all the things I always said I wanted to do..."when I wasn't working and had more time". So here I am.

I've done a few triathlons in the past, olympic and sprint distances. I haven't done any in the past 5 years, so I have some work ahead of me. I have signed up for St. Anthony's (olympic) end of April this year, so I need to start training right now. I'm in reasonably good health, but I need to lose a good 10 pounds and build up my stamina. I think being part of a mentoring group would be super helpful to me, and I also am looking forward to providing support and friendship to others.

I am single, recently moved to the Tampa Bay area of Fl., and share my home with 3 parrots. Or, maybe I should say they share "their" home with me. Isaac, (22 yr old Amazon parrot) loves to join me on bike rides. He sits atop a bike basket, spreads his wings and encourages me to ride faster.. It's quite the sight!
Looking forward to a wonderful 2018

Best regards
Michelle

Happy New Year!!!!

Bio: My name is Nancy and I this trip around the sun will be my 47th one. I teach 8th grade English, I am married (my husband is a PGA Tour caddie--who just happens to be heading to Hawaii next week when I go back to work after a nice relaxing break), and though we have no children, we do have 3 'fur kids,' Louie, James, and Edward.

NAME: Nancy

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: I'm only on FB as Nancy Downard Schwertfeger

STORY: At one point in my life, I was a really good equestrian. I rode 3-day event horses (dressage, cross-country jumping, and stadium jumping) for 20 years, but the reality of being an adult and wanting to do adult-like things (i.e. buy a house, own a car, go on a date, etc) required that I move away from the horses. After 15 years of 'adulthood,' though (jobs, master's degree, marriage, moving to a new state, etc) and I found I'd lost a little of myself. So, I got into fitness. One day I saw a friend of mine had run the Columbus (Ohio) marathon and met her sub 4-hour goal. I mentioned to her that I'd always wanted to 'be a runner,' but that I just wasn't a runner. With her encouragement in Oct. of 2011, I started Couch to 5K and signed up for my first ever running race that next Feb, a half marathon. LOL. Finished the HM and signed up for another. The next fall, I set my sights on a full marathon. Ran that in March of 2013. The next day I thought: Now what? I saw that the city I lived in, Augusta, GA, had a half Ironman in September. That sounds like a good next goal, right? I signed up the next day and then went looking for a bike and a place to swim (prior to that year, the furthest I had ever swam was from the center of the deep end to the ladder when I was 12 years old). Met some great new friends in Tri Augusta and trained and raced Augusta 70.3 in 2013 and 2014. For 2015, I wanted to focus on improving my run and sprint/oly distances only. The year started off great, I was making huge improvements in my run, I had nagging injuries that kept me from doing what I wanted and then...BAM. I just got totally burned out on all of it. Dropped off the swim/bike/run planet. For the next 18 months, I kept trying to find my mojo, but it was gone.

Then, in April of 2017 I volunteered at a YMCA triathlon for children with disabilities, called "Tri my Best." Motivated by their atttitudes, I jumped back into training, signed up for Augusta 70.3 for that September and started training. Race day wasn't the most fun day I've had. I was underprepared, but didn't have my worst race on record. The next day, I made contact with a coach that I respect, and we've been working together since Oct. 1.

I never thought I'd like being a coached athlete as much as I do. I love the accountability, I love the pats on the back from time to time, and I love being held accountable for when things don't go as planned. It's required me to really think about the things I do from day to day that impact my ability to train and improve. It doesn't hurt when your training plan and your consistency in pushing oneself to meet each day's goals allows you to take over a minute per mile off your run pace in 12 weeks.

FAMILY STATUS: Married for 12 years to a PGA Tour caddie. 3 dogs, Louie (14 years old), James (8 years old), Edward (1 year old)

CURRENT TRAINING: Currently run training only, prepping for a March marathon. Will then switch to multi-sport focus for the remainder of the year and into 2019.

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Columbia marathon (March 2018), Augusta HIM (Sept 2018), IM-Louisville (Oct 2019)

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I was a Manatee before I lost my mojo, and the Manatees are just a great group of people. I love the comraderie, the feedback, and thoughtfulness of the group. Anyhow, my goal this year is to improve my biggest weakness in triathlon which is my run. I'd like to be able to actually run a decent half marathon during the Augusta 70.3 instead of suffering through 12 of 13 miles like I have my previous 3 races. So, the big goals this year: Run the Columbia marathon in 4:20-4:30 (my previous Columbia marathon time was 4:57 in 2013) and finish Augusta 70.3 in 6:15 or better (my best finish was my first at 6:35).

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: Well, I'm built a little like a Manatee, I swim slow, and I don't think Manatees are the fastest swimmers. Manatees seem gentle and kind, and while I may have to become a whirling dervish from time to time when my 8th graders get out of line, I'm a pretty gentle and kind person. Seriously, though, I'll be a good sounding board whenever I can.

Hi Michelle, welcome to the Manatees!  You are the 3d Florida manatee!  Since you are in Tampa you are sort of in between Chris and me. I understand there is a very active tri community in Tampa, so you should be able to find people to train with should you want that. I'd love to see your parrot biking with you!! Does his flapping help with speed?

In sept 2016, while training for a half marathon, my knee gave way, resulting in a torn ACL and meniscus. I had an op to repair this in April 2017. Trying to get back into shape as I have my wedding in May this year.

FAMILY STATUS: Engaged.

CURRENT TRAINING: Just knee rehab at the minute. Looking to start a programme this week.

RACES PLANNED FOR 18: At least 2 Sprints.

BEER PREFERENCE: IPA's!

WEIGHT LOSS: That would be nice.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A MENTEE. You tell me, I’ll do it.

Hi, I’d love to join your group -

NAME: Ally

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: alsiedee on MyFitnessPal

STORY: 52 yrs old, former engineer/international project mgr, currently SAHM working part time. I love being outdoors - hiking, biking, kayaking; I love competing/training hard, though I’m only a middling athlete. I dove into triathlon in my mid-forties and loved it - trained with a great group of people, got into decent shape, even had moderate success on the podium - a few 2nd place Athena finishes in local races. Running was always my weakest point and I participated in some longer-distance running training programs with our local running club to work on it. In hindsight, it would have been better to just stick with the 10k distance that I had (finally!) built up to rather than try to go faster/farther. Instead, I wound up pushing too hard & injuring my knee. It’s taken several years and focused PT to get to the place where I can do normal activities & sports without pain/re-injury. I’ve been playing volleyball (and more recently pickleball) for some cardio, but it’s not been enough to get back in shape. With focused training, I think I could achieve either a Sprint Tri or a Bike-Swim-Bike event this year. But given my starting point - current fitnesss, age, etc - it’s definitly a challenge that I’d like to face with the support of other tri-enthusiasts.

FAMILY STATUS: Married with 2 kids (twins - middle schoolers), one cat; kids are hoping we’ll add a dog soon..

CURRENT TRAINING: starting pretty much from scratch (only occasional team sports right now, no tri-sport training currently)

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: I’ll pick a local Sprint Tri to train for this year; haven’t decided which one yet. Longer term goal is to be able to compete at the Olympic distance again or find longer swim/bike events.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Initial goal - get back into a solid training routine, starting with swim/bike workouts; as lose some weight, begin walk/run program. Long term goals - be able to run a 5k with my kids, compete in Sprint Tri (or bike-swim-bike event), reach & maintain healthy weight.

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I have to admit, it was the name that drew me in - not only do I visit Homosassa Springs every year (winter home of the manatee) but I kind-of feel like a manatee myself right now - slow & gentle. I think I’d have the most to contribute to older/newer triathletes; I’m familiar with overcoming some of the challenges faced by older &/or heavier athletes. But I also would enjoy following and cheering on the more elite athletes among us.

Hi all,

I'd like to return to the pod as well!

NAME: Adam
OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: I'm on Facebook and Instagram (and a lurker on Twitter) happy to friend any Manatees.
STORY: I'm a 44 (age up) year old university professor. I was a short-distance track athlete in high school and spent most of my 20s and 30s doing recreational gym workouts. Like everyone else, I have a tough time balancing work/family/training. I had never done any type of endurance activity until triathlon and this will be my 3rd full season of triathlon. The last two years, I've done a 70.3 then burned out a bit and taken a long off-season.
FAMILY STATUS: I'm recently married (for the 2nd time) and have two teenagers (15 year old boy and 13 year old girl). Yikes.
CURRENT TRAINING: I'm currently strength training and will start adding in some cardio soon.
THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: None currently, but I'll hope to add some late spring sprints and maybe some late season Olympics or maybe a half.
GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I train mostly in isolation so I greatly value this group. It's really great having a supportive group of varying experience.
WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: Well, I can't say that I'm always the best (esp when I'm not tri training). However, I think I'm firmly in the middle between newbies and some of the seasoned triathletes here. It's not been that long since I started (and I still swim like a newbie) so I can relate to those just starting out.

Hi Ann-Marie

I see now that my format for my introduction was not quite right. Apologies to the group. Yes, I've recently joined "outspoken multipart team", although haven't yet done much with them. Will start this month for sure! I do encourage Isaac to help peddle up the overpasses.. (only hills there are here!). Not sure he really helps, but he's fun to ride with. But, he only rides on my clunker bike, not my road bike... So, different type of ride, but since the bike weights a ton, I figure its still good exercise. I would post a picture, but not sure how to do that...
Looking forward to being part of the Manatees...
Happy New Year everyone!
