Subject: Controversial crash - you make the call

Did this rider intentionally pull down the yellow jersey?  Did he do it because he was being driven into the barrier or because the race was on the line?

Bos: "It's making me sick"

Impey still in hospital after crash with Bos, who defends his role

Dutch racer Theo Bos says he feels sick about Sunday’s crash in the final kilometer of the Presidential Tour of Turkey. His crash with yellow jersey wearer Daryl Impey (Barloworld) has generated a huge amount of Internet chatter and calls for Bos to be punished for his role in it.

Impey was awarded the race win despite the crash, which left him on the ground for 20 minutes before he could cross the finish line. The South African rider remains in the hospital in Turkey. His team said he cracked two vertebrae in his lower back, as well as suffering facial injuries including a missing tooth.

Footage of the final kilometer of the race has been watched and dissected by hundreds of thousands of YouTube viewers. The helicopter footage appears to show Bos grabbing Impey’s jersey and pushing Impey into the fencing. Bos was behind Impey when he reached out. Both riders went down...

First I have to say that I love the name of the race. Tour of Turkey. I just can't help but think of a turkey and not Turkey. Can.not.stop.giggling.

Anyway, WOW. From the video it definitely looks like Bos is pulling Impey down and shoving him into the barrier. It is unfortunate that we can't see Bos fully or in the moments before. I think that would be more telling. All we see is a fist grab Impey's jersey and then the crash. I feel like if I could see what was happening Impey the few seconds before I could better judge. From the way the video is shot it looks like a very intentional and aggressive move on Bos's part. But also one that doesn't make a lot of sense considering the crash certainly didn't do him any favors.

I go back and forth. It sure looks intentional. But if you're gonna intentionally pull someone down, why pull them down in front of your wheel, causing you to crash as well?

Interesting.  At first contact it looks to me like Bos is pushing him away.  Then he grabs a fistful of jersey and the elbow comes in like he's pulling.  Now, what that makes me think of is a non-intentional instinct.  He was pushing Bos to get him out of the way, but started losing some of his own control (I'd have to watch closer than I did to be sure).  Maybe not much, but at that stage in the sprint, even the slightest sense that you're leaning too much in the wrong direction has to be corrected immediately.  So, he grabs to pull himself back right and....  boom.

That's my "it could have been an accident" interpretation.

Then there's the intentional interpretation.  He pulled Bos down figuring he'd be able to walk away from the wreck.

Honestly, I like my first thought better.

Seen a fair bit of debate about this...Although it looks intentional on the slo-mo clip, you can't tell what happened just prior to the crash. In any case, yellow jersey's team mates should have been all around him. The guy wasn't contesting the sprint, so where were they?

When I saw this I thought now how would Sherlock Holmes or a real life great mind like Brown_Dog_Us would decipher this to establish intention. Some of you have mentioned that it looks like Bos was initially pushing Impey. This does not seem to be the case to me. He would need to lean into the guy in order to do that or he would veer left into the barriers and the Impey would veer right. The other thing I noticed is that Bos was accelerting to catch Impey just before he grabbed him.  I would need to consult with Brown_Dog_Us on this, but my conclusion is that something happened between the two just before they were on camera which pissed Bos off.  Bos accelerates and intends to grab Impey and push him forward out of Bos' way so that Bos could move right or have more room or something.  I can not believe that Bos would be so stupid as to intentionally grab Impey and pull Impey down in front of himself.  I think he was angry and just want to give him a rough shove to get Impey out of his way.

There is an interview with Bos on You-Tube, but it is in Dutch. I am going to have a Dutch friend interpret it for me.  I would really like to know what the nut was thinking.  From experience I have dealt with a few Dutch people that react before they think.

Don't worry.  I'm here.

The first time I watched it I thought he was pulling him into the fence, but after watching it a few times it looks like he was trapped against the fence and at pushed him away first and then he grabbed the jersey.  The verdict is very stupid riding.  He should have yelled instead of pushing.  This would have kept his right hand on the bars and he would have maintained control of his bike.  There will be no need for further punishment because he will forever be know as "that guy" and be met by hostility where ever he races.

I agree.  It looks like they make have had words prior to coming into the frame.  Bos was coming up to push him or get aggressive then things got out of control.  That is my take.  There is no way Bos set out to take him down and himself.  Way too dangerous to himself to wreck like that. He could have just ridden him into the barrier from the other side.

Chris has the best point of all...where the hell was his team mates.  You never leave the yellow alone.  Period.  Lazy or stupid team.  Basic roadie tactics.

UCI just announces Bos get one month for this insane riding which is the min. penality (max is 6 months).  Meanwhile, Impley is recovering from a broken jaw and teeth and several fractured vertebrae.  Justice?  I don't agree.

I am with you ... they should have made the suspension the same duration as it took the other ride to heal.

wow, I'm a n00b rider, but that looked about as F'd up as I've ever seen.

To me, it looked like Bos was being pushed into the fence/wall at first, then it looked like he grabbed the jersey and pulled him right in front of him! WTF? Stupid is as stupid does, I guess.

wow...he's screwed from now on, i think, and it wouldn't surprise me if he lost his team sponsorship and had trouble finding a new team.
