Comments:

When signing up for the Tri I had to summit a swim time. I took some of my workouts and tried to figure out what a good time would be. It was pretty much a guess on my part. I summitted a 5:30 time, I think I seriously under estimated my swim time. I passed four people in the pool! Right before I got in the pool I looked up to the window that I knew Jeff and the kids as well as Christian and Shannon were standing. Christian is over there holding up there sign it really made me laugh and just relax a bit. Thanks guys!
What would you do differently?:

Be a bit better in controlling my breathing. The first lap I didn't take my first breath until the 8th stroke. Jeff was kind enough to follow that for me. Toward the end of the swim, last four laps, I was breathing every two strokes. Even though I was breathing heavy toward the end, when I got out to run to T1 I felt good and got my breathing under control rather fast!

Forgot to drink before leaving.
The volunteer in bike area loved my Grape Jam Tri suit with raspberry trim. Talked to me the entire time I was running with my bike to go out.

Comments:

Going and doing the course early with Shannon(fitphd) and Christian(theattorney) realy helped in knowing some of the rough spots. It also helped mentally. Since I had already finished the course once I knew I could do it again. Got passed a few times. Mostly by really fit men, a couple of women, none in my age group. Worked on shifting gears and trying to use both chain rings and all gears. Still need to work on the shifting. Popped the chain off once, put it back on by MYSELF (didn't know I knew how to do that.) As I was fixing it I saw the white van pull up and knew that it was the bike guy. I was determined to get it myself and told him that when he got to me. Hopped back on the bike and almost took out two bikers going by me. They were not happy with me. Finished up strong even after having to stop. Saw the kids and their signs as I was
What would you do differently?:

I need to practice my gear shifting for the next time.

Comments:

I knew this was going to be the hardest part of the whole thing. I am not a strong runner. I was not prepared for all of the hills. Plus I had never run on a trail before. So considering all of that I think I did pretty good. The best part of it all was crossing the finish line. Sam and Emma came out and ran with me. Only "Wendi'd" once on this run!
What would you do differently?:

I will have to just keep going out there and trying hard.
Post race
Warm down:

Got to spend time with Shannon, Christian and Tom. Walked a bit and had a few bagels.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My run performance!

Event comments:

This was a great race for me to start with. It was short enough not to be discouraging at all. I enjoyed the whole experience!

Course: This course SUCKED! The first part was a running/bike path. As you leave that you head into a mulched trail. Not bad. Then we headed into the wooded part of the course. There were roots, bridges with no sides, a stepping stone path, mud puddles and many up hills. All UP hill! There was a steep climb up to the road. I turned up the hill and thought I was almost to the turn around. But OH No I still had a turn and another down hill before the turn around. Got to the turn around and thought okay now it will be down hills. Of course that was not the case. Going back the same way I came it was still all up hill on the way. Unbelievable!

The course was definitely hilly, especially the bike, it was all up and down. Also, the lap pool was total chaos.

But I enjoyed the course, even though the trail run was unexpected.

All right Denise! Way to go. I'm so glad you had a great first tri experience. Are you ready to hit St. A next year??? Have a great recovery day, you deserve it.

Denise, "simply amazing" are the words that come to mind.  A mere 4 months ago, we were sitting around a table in St. Pete and it was obvious you were becoming infected with the "tri" bug.  Now, here you are completing traithlons.  I've watched your training, your progression, and your disciplined approach as you've gotten ready for this event.

This was the payoff for all that work.  Congratulations!  I hope you relish that feeling of accomplishment.

Awesome race babe.  I thought you said your suit was pink and purple....grape and raspberry.  LOL!

Your swim was excellent.  Form was awesome.  Way to be aggressive in there and pass people!  Its tough in those tight lanes, but you didn't have any problem getting by.  Glad to see your front derailer cooperated (for the most part).  The run was tough!!!  Remember the look on the kids' faces when we walked the course?  And how well they slept that night?

You had a great race.  Congratulations!  Can't wait to see you in Angel's race next!

Great time on an unexpected trail run! Some people can't handle the unexpected during a tri (myself especially!), but it looks like you don't have this problem.

Have some friends in Chapel Hill, may try this one next year.

Awesome race!

Way to beat your forccasted swim time.  And a good bike despite some mechanical problems.

Sounds like you had a blast and have fully succumbed to the bug.  :D

Keep having fun!!!!!!!

I think I may have passed you the other way when you came out of the woods... did you ask the volunteer if it was the halfway point? I thought the same thing when I came out!! Then, I had my eyes fixed on someone going up the hill and when he turned down that one road I thought, okay, THAT must be the turn around!! Still not the turn around!! That course did seem long, but you dealt with a lot of adversity and handled it pretty well for your first tri. Good job!

Denise--I did the UNC as well, and I was equally surprised by the run course! But, since this is the first year for this race, at least we know what to expect next year. One thing I liked about the UNC, and the Endurance Development Series in general in the camaraderie that is felt when you do one of these races. everyone is nice, and amicable, and people are much more friendly on the course than I've found in the NCTS.

Congratulations again!!!

Way to go Denise! I had a similiar experience last year with the trail at Mission Man. Every race is different! Fantastic job with the chain! You would not believe how many people panic when that happens. Hang in there, you have a great coach, you can't go wrong!

Awesome race Denise! Super Swim, overcame the chain in the bike, and brought it on home on the hard run... Great support from the crew and your children!  I hope to cheer you on at the Angels Race... I believe I'm volunteering somewhere on the course...
