With the holidays comes the spirit of giving.   Tell us about the charities you support.   I am posting not so much as to find out which is most popular but to find out more about all of the great organizations out there.  I started a list - please add on and tell us about ones you are passionate about.

Thank you MoDs for fixing my poll!

Might as well say it again.

I'm giving a bunch to the Kidney Cancer Association
http://www.kidneycancer.org/get-involved/give/donate-now/

Remember to give to CFC if you're government!

There are half a dozen or so organizations that I send checks to regularly, but my local community food bank is where I spend my time. I'm slowly learning about the path donated food takes before it reaches the needy.

I fund raise for the American Diabetes Association through Tour de Cure and recently fund raised for Oasis for Orphans helping children in Kenya orphaned from the AIDS crisis. The ADA is the most near and dear to my heart as my mom, sister and nephew all have Type 1 Diabetes.

I volunteer my time at my local food bank packaging food packs for elementary and middle school-aged kids so they can have food to eat on the weekends. Yesterday we completed over 3,000 packs and those will be gone in a week.

I love this topic.

The majority of my charitable giving goes toward:

  • Children International – I’ve sponsored children through this organization for about 10 years. I am happy with the sponsorship process, communication I receive, ease at writing to your child (which I must get better at), etc. Highly recommend it.
  • Young Survival Coalition – The premier global organization dedicated to the critical issues unique to young women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. YSC offers resources, connections and outreach so women feel supported, empowered and hopeful.
  • My local United Way – One of the best organizations for addressing critical needs in our communities.
  • World Wildlife Fund – I like to give symbolic adoptions of animals as gifts – you receive an adoption certificate, photo and stuffed animal (nice one, too) with the adoption. You can opt to not have the photo and stuffed animal sent along with the adoption so that more of your donation goes toward the cause. When doing the adoption for kids, though, I always get the stuffed animal.

I am a member of the Army of Women, which connects women with opportunities to participate in breast cancer research studies. I haven’t participated in a study yet, but am hoping to one day have the opportunity to make my small contribution to such important research.

Heifer International - gives live stock, training, and other items with an eye to sustainability to families in the developing world. How else can you give your niece a "share" in a water buffalo for Christmas? I also just read how fantasy author, Patrick Rothfuss (a Game of Thrones) is a big supporter of this, and when he started making money at writing, he declared he would match funds if his fans donated there. It drained his bank account.

Smile Train - provides surgery for children with cleft pallets, as well as trains local doctors to perform these surgeries. It's been touted as "most productive, dollar for deed, charities in the world". The average cost to repair a cleft pallet is $250 per child.

Planned Parenthood

Local food bank

I'm looking for a Philippines Relief fund - anyone recommendations?

I love Heifer International. We've been using them for gifts for years and years. It's especially great to give as a gift to a kid who doesn't need any more "stuff". It's an actual tangible "thing", as opposed to just giving a donation in their name, and the card that the person gets explains aexactly how their donation will help the family or village who receives it.

I live rural, so with the help of a neighbor, plant about a 4 acre garden. We usually plant field peas, watermelons, cantalopes, tomatoes, okra and some peppers. We let anyone come harvest what they need as long as they don't sell it. It really helps the older folks on a fixed income.

I'm on the board of a local non-profit that is doing great things with adults with developmental disabilities. Most of our participants are on the autism spectrum.

The organization is Triumph Services (http://www.triumphservices.org/)

It is helping individuals live independently and having great success with it's program services, which is gaining some recognition as a model program throughout the country. Some people actually move here, or move their children here so they can be in the program and have the support that they need to live independently. Live, Work and Play.

NXS - that is cool. Did you have many takers? How did people know it was for the community? My niece grew veggies in. 20x20 foot plot at the community garden to donate to a senior center. It was a Girl Scout project - I'm not sure which badge she got for it. But pretty cool for a 12 YO

Special operation warrior foundation does incredible work. I have raised money for them through my first IM and first ultra. Each time I do something at the next level I use it to bring awareness to there group.

Good for your niece, I am sure she learned a lot things on many different levels. I hope she continues it in the future.

Like I said, we are rural (no neighborhoods). Everyone knows and looks out for each other, so pretty much everyone knows about the garden. Just about everyone makes use of it including the deer and coyotes! Peas (take up most of the garden) are like a staple around here, so folks get enough to can or freeze to carry them through the year. Melons, what can I say. When people see a ripe watermelon patch, you just can't keep them out.. The blessing I get from the folks who use it, is greater than what I take from the garden itself. Its not much, but its something for my little corner of the world.
