Pre-race routine:

Thursday drove to Orlando and met up with my parents. Went to the pool and did a few laps. Walked around DownTown Disney with the 'rents

Friday we did MGM. It was a good time. Walked a lot. Did some more laps. Met up with Wendi and Mike and the kids for dinner that night and to watch Fireworks.

Saturday: Did Animal Kingdom in the am. My parents were tired from the day before a little bit. Went back to the hotel and got registered etc. Met up with Wendi and Marcy who was borrowing my road bike for the race. Handed off the Trek and Wendi and I went over to drop off our bikes at Disney. We get there and I pump my tires, pump Wendis front tire and was having difficulty with her rear tire. Half the stem pops off in the Presta adapter. She doesn't have a new tube and my spare is too small. We decide to get on the boat, drop the bikes off, take the rear wheel off her bike and go to a bike store to get a new tube. The LBS at the race were absolutely no help and had no spare tubes. I felt so bad.

SOOO the problem is the LBS servicing the race is 45 minutes each way and we don't have that kind of time. We are calling everyone trying to find a closer bike store. We get off the boat and spont a phone book and start making calls. Luckily Wendis friend lives in Orlando and helped us find the closest one. Off to the store, get it fixed, back to Disney, back on the boat, walk back to transition and put said wheel back onto the bike...that was harder than the race..But crisis averted.

Sunday: Extremely rude drunk people in the hotel kept everyone up all night. They were still at it when Wendi and I left for transition at 4:30 am. I think I got 2 hours of sleep.

Got to transition and set up. Braided Wendis hair (pre-race ritual) Wandered around and tried to find our familys. Found them
Event warmup:

None. We just wandered around and watched everyone.
Swim
  • 08m 14s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started myself up front knowing I was probably one of the better swimmers for this race and I haven't quite figured out how to swim over people yet. My first fresh water tri.
What would you do differently?:

I need to learn how to push myself in open water. I was one of the first in my wave out of the water, and I think my time was around 8 minutes and I know I can do much better than that.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

I slowly jogged to T1. I just put on my helmet and went. There was a long muddy way before you comuld mount. I had my shoes elasticed on the bike and I sliped my right foot in, but the left band broke early and I struggled to get my left foot in the shoe.
What would you do differently?:

Not be injured so I could run faster.
Bike
  • 30m 34s
  • 10.2 miles
  • 20.02 mile/hr
Comments:

Once I got my feet in my shoes I was off. There were few tri bikes or road bikes at this event. Wendi and I like to check out the bikes but no eye candy at this event...well except for our bikes...Lots of mountain bikes, cross bikes and even a few beach cruiser bikes...one even had a basket on the front. Pretty easy to pass.

There was a really annoying no pass zone about 1/2 mile long or so. You could only go as fast as the mountain bike in front of you. It was kind of a nice break. Catch your breath, getout of aero, enjoy some gatorade.

The bike was fun. As always. I really pounded the bike because of my injury and the plan of walking the run I figured I could go all out.
What would you do differently?:

Had trouble with my shoes for the first time. I'm definately better with elastics than trying to clip in. Not sure what went wrong. Build more endurance to go FASTER>>>
Transition 2
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

Jogged with bike. Heard Marcy's husband cheering for me (THANKS) Went fine. Slipped on shoes and decided to forgo socks which turned out to be a mistake. Grabbed my hat and race belt and off I went. Ran thru trasition
What would you do differently?:

Once again not be injured so I can run
Run
  • 22m 21s
  • 2 miles
  • 11m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran out thru transition (OK don't everyone yell at me yet as I stryed from the walking plan...you can do that later) because there were like 200 people yelling to go and I just couldn't not run. Made the corner and WALKED up the very muddy hill and into the park.

I know the plan was to walk the run. BUT who of you who really know me thought I would be able to do that????? I'm just WAY too competitive. It would have been worse in any other race tho.

Got into the park and started to jog/walk/jog. I caught up to an older lady who was walking and asked her if she was part of team survivor (breast cancer survivors doing the race)She said no, and asked if I was. I said no, but I was running for my mom who is a breast cancer survivor. We walked together for a while and I started to jog again and we wished each other good luck.

Wasn't feeling too bad hip wise, and by the time I made it to Its a Small World my hip was getting sore so I decided to walk. Discoverd it hurt more to walk than to run so decided to run again. About this time I'm thinking...hey this no sock thing is working out pretty good. HA By the time I came out of Tommorrow land the blisters had started.. I started to walk again and this other racer starts yelling at me 'keep going you can't stop now you're almost done" OK so once again I succummed to peer pressure. Came thru Cinderellas castle and spotted the photographer. I didn't want to look like I was dying or tripping over my feet so I made an attempt to look like I was running instead of my shuffling jog thing. I knew I only had a litttle further to go so I picked it up and sucked it up til the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Not be injured. Put my socks on.
Post race
Warm down:

went to the medical tent to tend to my blisters (mild amount of blood stains in my shoe)and ice for my hip. Drank my water. Found my family, found Wendi's family. Watched Wendi finish. We all hung out and took pictures. Got our stuff out of transition and headed back to the boats to the parking lots.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1)Don't know how to pace myself in open water
2)Hip fracture
3)Blisters
4) Can't run secondary to number 2

Event comments:

It was an interesting race. Its really more of an event than a race. The focus is on finishing and the celebration of finishing and not so much racing and going fast. It is a race I would highly reccommend for a first timer. Everyone was really friendly. It being at Disney makes it a little difficult to get around, but it was really cool to run thru the park. It raises money for a good cause that is near and dear to my heart.

NICE pic of your hip.  I wouldn't be so bold as to take a picture of MY hip and put it up for everyone to view<img align='middle' src='https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/wink.gif'>, but if you got it, flaunt it!!  Anywway great race.  Hope your hip is feeling better today.  HAS to be tough to race injured, particularly when everyone is telling you to run!

wow, great job.  No sleep, muddy shoes, broken hip.... still an awesome race.

What, no LBS support at the race? That sucks.  They had a trailer last year.

Were you in pain afterwards?

LOL!  That is soooooo you Sue!  This is probably one of the best race reports all year with all the Disney landmarks in it.  Glad to see you took it moderately easy on the run.  Your bike kicked ass BTW.  4 of 94 in your AG.  Damn nice.

Keep on sticking to that hip healing plan.  Great race!!!!

Thanks everyone....BTW HIP UPDATE:  Its Ok today.  It was prettty sore last night and this am, but tylenol is a wonderful drug.  I think its finally starting to feel better.  I'm not signing up for any more races (unless I decide on the aquabike) until my hip is better because I am too competitive to not run.
