Member  1748     Exton, PA |  Subject: Tri bike with disc wheel, flat pedals, pink paisley helmetI remember a thread a while back, someone commenting about a tri bike with flat pedals on it and how wrong it looked. SO here is what happened to me this weekend. Friday afternoon argument with my son about going down the shore with me and his sisters, led to me leaving half my gear in the front of garage! I get to the beach where I have a sprint tri planned on Sunday morning, but when I'm unpacking I start to realize I don't have my bike shoes, or my helmet, or my bike pump. (next 20 minutes spent cursing at myself) I show up to race on Sunday morning, I took flat pedals off my daughters bike and borrowed her pink and white paisley helmet. Yes it looked a little silly, but I was there to race. I think the other guy thought I was out of the competition Finished in 9th OA and 1st in AG Never under estimate a bike flat pedals on a bike, it could be someone that forgot their shoes and improvised. By the way my T2 was very fast! |

I can't believe I didn't notice the helmet because I remember when I got caught by you and a couple others. Especially with a disc cause I love that sound. I'll send you the link for results. I don't think they have posted pics on their website in awhile. |

Here is me with platform pedals (and kids helmet). I am a Beginner Triathlete and only averaged 20 mph over a 56 mile bike course.
Here is the guy that won the race who forgot his bike shoes. He averaged over 23 mph over the same 56 mi course riding barefoot.
I look at clipless pedals to cycling like I do wet suits to swimming. They keep you in a good position. If your technique is flawless then you don't need the wet suit to keep you high in the water. If your peddle technique is flawless you likewise don't need clip less pedals to keep your foot position in the correct spot on the pedal or to keep you foot in contact with the pedal. I did note on an old list of energy savings from aero gear that one item they listed was taping your shoe laces. Apparently when everyone was on platform pedals that was a cheep way to buy another 2-3 watts. Obviously with bike shoes you are more aero in that regard. Barefoot may have give the guy above a few more watts of energy savings. :-) Still...Mike761 nice work. One of my AG competitors (as in 40+) in SE Asia rides a pink tri bike painted with Hello Kitty designs. She's fast, too, so no one laughs at her bike. |
