For some reason I much prefer climbing than riding on the flats. Anyone else feel the same way?

Give me a 3-hour ride in the mountains over a 3-hour or even 2-hour flat ride any day of the week! The steeper the better!

Which do you prefer and why?

As long as I can get a bike ride in, it doesn't matter to me.  But training for a specific race with hills, ya gotta do hills.

I like flat, fast, smooth pavement, and low traffic.  Of course, I live in Mississippi.  It's not like I've ever really done a climb of any significance, so my options were limited to begin with.

Flat, or just slightly south of flat. I suck at climbing and am scared of descending, unless it's long and gradual. I'll probably NEVER do an Ironman, but if I did, I'd do Florida

X2! not many climbing options here in FL either.

I don't think I've ever done a ride that's really flat.  I think it might be fun to see what speeds I'd average on a flat ride but I generally do enjoy the hills.

I don't know its a toss up for me.  I enjoy climbing because I am able to see what I've just accomplished (size wise) and flats are nice cause of the speed I can gain.

I guess climbing wins because of the decent.

I like to train on all hills but race at flat as possible.

I like both it keeps things entertaining however having to do a long steep climb really gets me excited; there is something about the challenge that I enjoy a lot.

Definitely the hills, which makes Monday mornings actually appealing!  Nothing like a nice 4km climb in to work to start the week!

I like rolling hills -- I enjoy climbing, but I really suck at it, so it is nice to have a mix of climbing and descents, with occasionally some flat terrain thrown in.  Luckily, that is a pretty accurate description of my city.

I really was not crazy about cycling until I met some difficult hills...now it's appeal is growing. I would still say varying terrain to keep it interesting

I love the rollers. We have them here in N. Alabama and I enjoy it. It's good to get the taste of flats, but the hills are where the power comes from!

I much prefer climbing even though I hate hills. It might have to do with the fact that there are not good flat places to ride near me without running into traffic/stop lights/signs etc...Even the trails are not to good even if flat because of all the people/animals/speed limits on them (who wants to only go 15mph on a nice flat, paved trail?)  When I am climbing I don't care about the stops because by the time I get there I am ready for a break and they do not put nearly as many lights/signs on the hills around here.

I feel more satisfied after a long climb or day in the hills.  But fast flats is a kick as well.

I like a bit of everything.

I'm a big fan of the 15+ mile canyon climbs out here. After an hour of straight climbing, you almost forget you're on a hill!

Or not...

Climbing, no contest.  I hate flat.  My riding partner loves flat or long slight grades.  Funny, he beats me there most of the time, and I usually win the climbs.
