For planning purposes, I am curious what everyone's favorite tris are. Come on chime in!

BASF Tri- all around great vibe thru-out the whole race, participants and spectators were more than supportive and cheering all on. the run course was a lil pita but really good mash potatoes has its lumps.

Triangle Tri- Awesome course! There are some squeaks to oil in the new venue but again, mashed potatoes...Still a great venue for the participant.

Gary Kirby Tri- I did not participate in this one, was purely spectating. This was a great supportive tri. however the bike course was a looped course- while that can be good to build your speed with familiarity, it can also get monotonous. overall it seemed to have a good specatator level and vendor support.

Bandits is my favorite. Hilly, yes, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger right?! It's a very scenic swim start and bike course. Not a crowded race, which is always a plus.

Carol:

The Bandits write up describes the hills. What is it like near the dam? Are there places where there is a drop off on one side? Do you drive out that morning or stay at a hotel?

Done 4 so far: Buckner Mission Man in Burlington (sprint), Pinehurst Oly, White Lake Half, Triangle (sprint). Buckner Mission Man was really nice- my first one and they had a ton of food at the end. It was a great start, nice course, beautiful lake, etc. Bike course is prob a little easier than Triangle. Pinehurst: nice race but I bonked so have some mixed feelings. Planning on doing it again this year. White Lake Half: I was giddy for days afterwards with a great sense of accomplishment. Nice race- tons of support on the course. Triangle: had a great race but the parking situation was an issue (as we've discussed). Buckner is next weekend if you want to do another sprint soon...its a 750m swim, 14 mile ride and 5K run.

Last year I drove out that morning with Tom H, one of the swim group. Made for a long day, but he did all the driving, so easy for me! Haven't decided what I'm doing this year yet. Guess I better figure it out soon!!

I don't recall anything unsafe about the roads near the dam. There is a guardrail. Here are my race photos from last year. You can see how pretty it was. This race was just before I got my tri bike. It will be interesting to do it again with the new bike.

Wilmington YMCA is definitely my favorite. It's a long day and a lot effort to get down there and set up, but its the only swim I love.

I'm also a big fan of Gary Kirby, even more with the bike racks added this year. I like the 4 lap course because my family can actually watch.

White Lake holds a special place for me, but I had the most fun in a race at Pinehurst.  It all clicked on race day.

White Lake Sprint II, 2009, will always be special for me since it is a nice area, flat, I have several close frinds that live at the lake, and that's where I got my first podium.  Master Novice 3rd.  Although it was just MN, it will alwyas be special since that was Mother's day and my wife was with me.  Many things came together on that day to make White Lake special and one I will never forget.

With my limited race history (only 3 so far) mine has been Latta.  Just felt good the whole time, great environment.  It was a good time.

White Lake Half.  Love the swim, love the bike course and I even like the new run course.

Bandit's is close, close second. Good swim, awesome bike and a kick run.  And like keyone, I like that it's a small race.  (And maybe to keep it that way I should point out that lake is full of water moccasins, the bike course is covered in chicken poop from all the Tyson's chicken farms, the run course is hazardous due to the high winds and likelihood of plummeting to your death off the dam.  Also, it rains every time.  So you probably shouldn't ever do this race.  Move along.  Nothing to see here.)

as far as a fun vibe, Wilmington YMCA in September.  Always fun, never know what you'll see on the course (clowns, professional wrestlers)

I haven't done White Lake with the new run course, so I won't comment on that one.

Pinehurst is a great course.  And I have had a good race and a bad race there.

B2B 1/2 was great.

Lake Kristi outside of Greenville, NC is a fun small sprint.  ski lake swim, run is mostly on the grass.  small, local race, but you get to know everyone.

As for Bandits, it was a fun race, even though it was raining the year I did it.  Swim is great, bike is challenging. (and yes there was a snake, but it was a rattlesnake in the curled up in striking position in the middle of the road on the bike course, not in the lake) .  The run up and down the and back of the dam is the hardest (even harder than the big hill at Duke 1/2)

Now Duke 1/2 holds a place in my heart/soul because I'm going to break 6 hours overall and 2 hours on the run on that course before I die.  That was my first 1/2 ever several years ago and I almost quit on the run (you can see my race report on it).  I barely broke 7 hours that year.  The next year I took some off.  The following year I got oh so close to 6, but walked the big hill.  This year. ... we'll see.  But that is why I do this particular race.  To beat the race course ( and hopefully some other racers too)

Quite frankly, I haven't had a bad time racing any race (don't ask me that during the run at White Lake 1/2 though, you might get a different answer )

I like Lake Kristi in Geenville and Woodlake in Vass . Both are small sprint races. Lake Kristi is on Mr./Mrs. Overtons property (Overton's Watersports) and the lake is man made and named after his daughter who is/was a professional water skier. This is a well run and very fun race. Woodlake is put on by the Woodlake Country Club volunteers. There are no timing mats or chips. They don't even supply split times. But a very fun, well run race and not expensive. Also, I have done the Goldsboro sprint before, which I like as well. I've done alot of the Setup races including Wilmington, Triangle, White Lake Half, Duke Half, Pinehurst, Bandits, JF Hurley, Over the Mountain, Riverwood but the smaller races remain my favorite. I'd like to do some of those FSseries races. They sound pretty low key.

The FS Series races are very well organized. I have done Nelson Bay in Stella NC and Little Washington (Sprint and OLY). Both are great courses and well supported by the community. Emerald Isle is a fun race in October, although the weather is dicey and them swim has been cancelled on a couple of occasions.

the Washington Triathlon may actually go up to a Half Next year and be held in April.

ditto on the FS series.. Beaverdam oly in apr is a nice season tuneup...with cold water.  Washington oly is also nice. Both have a nice park for the kids to play in while they are attending the race.

Lake Logan - Gorgeous setting, flat bike except for a killer hill at the start and end.  Organization was great, tons of parking, excellent traffic control.  Can't say enough good things about it!!

Beach to Battleship Half was really a great race, even considering the ferry traffic after the race.

I also really enjoy swimming at White Lake.
