Pre-race routine:

I picked up my race packet on Friday and saigned up Janice and picked up Hollis' race packet. Did the expo thing and lots of other goodies. Got new shoes. Hung out with my friend Joanne in the DonJoy booth. Met Trixie, Lane, Jean, Chris and Wendi and we went to a late lunch. Janice (foolproof) and Hollis (possum) stayed with me Friday night. We went to dinner at Chillis and to bed early.
Event warmup:

Janice and Hollis wanted to follow me over. Unfortunately I don't know downtwon Tampa well and teh only exit I know was blocked off. I was very afraid of losing them and had no idea where I was going. Renee was calling me asking where I was parked. Heartrate in zone one. After a time consuming romp thru Tampa make our way to the garage and the stupid person in front of me has to get out of her car to pay becuase her purse is int he trunk.AAARGGGHHHH Heart rate in zone 2. Clearly she is not a runner doing the race and take her sweet time. We finally get parked but I loose Hollis and Janice in the garage. The original plan was to drop gear at the convention center but now there is not time. Renee is calliing, Janice is calling....find everyone, find the start. There are about 500 people in line for the bathroom. I'm too stressed to wait in line but Hollis and Janice get in line. I find my Plant City friends and chat before the race. They are uber fast tho and I know I can;t run with them. I am stressing because I did not get to stretch because of the afore mentioned snafus. A big thanks to Renee for coming to my race :)

Comments:

I decided to wear the shoes I bought in the expo on Friday. I know you aren't supposed to do something on Race day you don't normally do but since every pair of running shoes I own give my blisters I figured I had nothing to loose. I used J&J blister protection thingys on my insteps. RUn started on time. Did the first mile in 10:18..pretty good for me...a few seconds into the second mile stopped to pee, second miles 10:35 excluding pitstop. I actually was feeling pretty good. I actually felt like a runner. My hip didn't hurt. I had magic new shoes. I think I started taking my 2 minute walk breaks during mile 3. Times went down hill from there. Saw Janice on the other side of the road and waved. I was at the half way point in 52 minutes. I was feeling pretty good til about an hour into it and both legs started rebelling. I have never ever run that far in my life. Longest run to date is 7.5ish. Plan was to run the last 5K but it wasn't happening. Walked the rest stops. Time is an estimate off my watch. I escaped with only one small blister on my left foot.
What would you do differently?:

I need more time running. Need to work on my biomechanics. I almost feel like I would have been better off if I had just kept running.
Post race
Warm down:

Renee and Max and Lane were at the finish. Once I stopped for a few minutes my legs felt fine. I wasn't real tired or anything. Walked around. Went back to my car for my dry clothes. Changed and found Hollis and Janice. Shopped. Met up with the majority of the BT crew at a restaurant. Skipped the OWS in favor of packing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm a terrible runner with loads of injuries new and old and lots of biomechanincal problems. Met with Biomechanist friend Monday. Working on it.

Event comments:

It was really great to meet everyone that night for the pasta dinner. Big time thanks to Renee for organizing everything despite the fact she was running her first marathon the next day!!!!

Magic Shoes? Wow can I get me a pair of them too? One tiny blister seems like real progress for you the blister Queen!

Congrats on a PB for new distance!

Now you are ahead of me for distance....but I'm doing 9 on Saturday so I'll catch up....we are like two little ants keeping progress with each other...sometimes you are ahead like now other times its me.

Your running is progressing...you went through a lot last year with injuries you know.

I hope your biomechanics friend can help you along with Mike and your hard work!

Congrats on a nice Race!

Wooo hoooo...longest run ever!  You're just another one of the great BT-ers who did such a fantastic race this weekend.  Congrats on a wonderful race.  Get yourself some rest before you get back into training.  You're gonna be strong this summer!

whoa, now, Dr. Self-Deprication....  You are what you are, and you may be less fast than others, but you

a) were faster than you have ever been at that distance!
b) ran longer than you ever have before,
c) went farther than you ever have before.
d) didn;t quit when your body began to betray you

etc. etc.

with love,

sue7013 - 2006-03-01 11:46 AM thanks everyone for your kind words...but I am slow and I know it!!

Well, DUH!!! Of course, you're slow!

I'm slow, too, but I don't let my slowness affect my attitude or sense of accomplishment.  Slow is where I'm at TODAY. I will be somewhere else next month. And the month after. Fast isn't a state of mind or a personality trait; it's where you get after you work the process.

Celebrate the small successes, Sue. Those small successes lead to big successes.

You did it, forget about the speed. With all the injuries that is quite the accomplishment. Great work.

Sue I wanted to thank you for being such a great inspiration to me. I'm still new to running and today was a day that I just didn't feel like running. Every week has been geting better for me, but I still need to read posts like yours to help keep my attitude in the right direction. So "Thank You", and dont worry about being fast. Everyday we are faster than those that dont try at all.

May your distances increase and all your trails be downhill.
