Supporting an athlete.

One who engages in this is an "athletic supporter" aka a "jockstrap". 

 It's a BT-ism that originated, I believe, with Comet and Tri Take Me Away.

That would be Grease.

And if I’m showing up to cheer, I’m starting the term “Jog Bra’ing.”  You’re welcome.

Coulda sworn it was Grease 2...or is that the one where they made fun of the secretary's voice "Rydell High...beat the Caviliers!"

I’m not sure.  I’ve tried very hard to burn the images of Grease 2 out of my head.

I first heard the term from a guy who isn't on BT and a girl that is, Steamy. The term "athletic supporter" was thrown around our running group in Atlanta where I was living. I didn't get the double entandre. It was explained and I just started using the term jockstrap. That was in 2004....now its made its way to the common tri vocab of BT.

I call it 'Strapping for short sometimes. Post your Athletic Supporter pics too! At its finest in this whole album:

Honestly, I can't believe the traveling I've done to jockstrap and how far my friends have come to jockstrap. Jess has gone to Canada! Thats awesome, she's Queen Jockstrap. Its just as fun as racing.

OK, not that my lowly single state Athletic Supporterism can compare, but here it is:

The first one is me remotely jockstrapping Dumpster, who was in Kona... I was at home-a.

Next is Quentin, the cat, jockstrapping Dumpster via IM LIVE (heh, 'cept that's Normann Stadtler on the screen, there)

Then we have me out in the cold @ March Madness Half Marathon... (JOCKSTRAPPIN' with Mr. Hangloose, now that was fun fun fun!! Although this was the only photo we took! "I wanted a high five, not a DNA sample!")

Then we have 2 photos from IM WI last year... and, come to think of it, since this was in Wisconsin, I have dual state Athletic Supporterism to my credit. We stood, in the rain, on top of the last of 3 big hills on the bike course. People probably thought they were hallucinating us! Pink wigs and all.

My first jockstrap race was for Schmize last year.  It was the first time I met his wife and she punched me.  Good times. 

My second 'strapping was with Whizzzzz at that CHILLY half mary in Cary in March of this year.  She put up a great quote from that day so I'll put up one too.  "What are YOU doing here???!!!!"  (mine's funnier if you know the story)

My third strap attack was at Rockman.  Cheering tupuppy and coredump and others.  Great morning. The Schmize gang showed up too so we had a j'strapping party going on.  Here's Whizzz cheering on Chris at the run finish.  The road is empty because it is at the top of a brutal hill just before transition and not a lot of other people were finishing in under 5 hours!
