Ok 'Bones let's decide who the Cupcakes Goddesses will be donating to.

After voting, please list your name in a post so we'll have an idea of who's voted.

I'll start with a vote for LiveStrong.

Actually I have an idea...recently a pro (I think ) rider was injured, I don't remember the exact circumstances but this rider lost his legs.  He was from this area and an IL coaching business (VisionQuest, owned by former US Postal rider Robbie Ventura) is collecting funds.  I got an email from my bike club but deleted it...more info to follow!

Ok, I'll withdraw my plea for ADA and go with Livestrong as well...especially since this is the first week of Lance's final Tour de France, and so many of our BTers have personal stories re:cancer.  My grandparents both died of cancer in the last few years.

I really like Lance and fully support his quest for #7, but my vote is for the Challenged Athletes Foundation.  I am truly moved and impressed by their history and mission.  My brother-in-law was on his way to becoming a world-class cyclist when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.  Long story short is he is now blind and a double amputee.  Cancer you are asking...well why isn't he voting for Livestrong?  Simply because CAF is the organization that is working with my BIL to help regain some of the activity that he once had.  Of course, he'll never compete again but if he can experience some small part of what was the love of his life, then I have to think it is a good thing.

I voted for Live Strong. My dad has prostate cancer and has become a big Lance Armstrong fan. I never thought I'd see my dad wear a braclet but he always has on his Live Strong band.

I should point out that this poll is for the members of the Testosterbones from last month's bike challenge.

I apologize for any lack of clarity in the original post.

Everyone knows my stand here but I'll reiterate it briefly for the benefit of those who don't.

I lost several family members to cancer (including my mother) and Lance Armstrong is doing great work.  I have even been wearing my yellow Livestrong bracelet since April 2004 to show my support.

However, there are people that have much less resources to help find a cure for their diseases.  These are the people who suffer from "Orphan Diseases".  Those diseases that are rare and don't have the Lance Armstrong or Team in Training or pleathora of relatives affected to help raise money.

Aplastic Anemia is one of those "orphan" diseases.

It's great that so many people recognize Lance, have been touched by cancer (me included), and want to give to these "high profile" diseases, but we really can't forget the people who are dying that have little to no resources available to them.  No pharmaceutical company interest, no research university interest, and no "celebrities" helping to raise awareness.

Please consider donating the funds from the June Bike Lots Challenge to the Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation.  With the little resources they have, they have been able to reduce the mortality rate of those stricken with the disease from 80% in 1983 down to 30% today ! !

In addition, the money that is donated directly to the foundation can be deposited into a special "research" account and 100% of the money will be used for research.  NO administration fees are taken out!

Well, this is the really "awkward" part of the deal ... selecting which charity to donate to.

I humbly suggest that we donate the money to something other than the LAF. Why? Because everyone donates to LAF, and everyone and their sister will be donating this month as the TdF is taking place and all over the news. Plus, there is simply not a single person that has not been touched by cancer in some way. There will always be interest.

There are simply other charities that have as much need, but not the resources for generating funds. I will go out on a limb (a very safe limb) and state that there will not likely ever be a shortage of cancer and/or AIDS research money.

I would prefer we give the money to a charity that desperately needs it. My initial thought was "Hey, what about Motivated's (Karl's) charity that he's racing for?" Not many people, even those from BT, have pledged money to help him "race for charity". I have a soft spot in my heart for those charities that cater to kids and their families.
I vote for Steve's charity suggestion.

Again, we cannot go wrong with a decision here. An organization that is going to do great things will get a little (literally) financial backing. IMO, it makes the most sense to send the $$$ to where it is most needed. My humble suggestion.

Later. RyanB.

From the Rules Thread:

The two teams, through their captains, will each designate a single beneficiary charity. The losing team will make donations to the charity selected by the winning team. I would recommend using last month’s guidelines in selecting a charity.

Pledge

  • Also in this thread, you will state the maximum amount of your pledge. This will be the amount that you donate to the designated charity should you NOT make your goal and your team loses.
  • If you make your individual goal, but your team loses anyway, you will donate half of your pledge to the designated charity.
  • Participation is strictly voluntary, as is the payment of your pledge (honor system!). This is just a little challenge among friends, and in no way constitutes gambling. BT.com is not involved with this in any way except as a communication medium via these discussion boards.

So, it appears that it's up to Karl to officially designate a charity so folks can make their pledges and that I was being something of a noodge by posting the poll in the first place.

Well even if you were a noodge (which I don't think so because we are patiently waiting for someone to make a decision here) you can get away with it because your new sig line is really sweet!

Drumming fingers, here....Could y'all set a deadline and decide on the charity? I have $25 burning a hole in my pocket.

Actually, now that we're on to the next challenge (and charity decision, as I understand it), I don't want this thread and ultimate donation to get lost in the chatter.

Just let us know. Thanks.

I've placed my vote..

but I was basically out of touch for the past 5 days or so with the exception of updating my log..

When will the voting be over??

I have LOTS of threads to read so any help and updates on the challenges front would be great..

Thanks
