Member 85![]() ![]() ![]() Vienna, VA | Subject: Bonzai lost my businessWell, I had my first tri last weekend and I wanted to rent a wetsuit to give it a shot. Bonzai in Falls Church (VA) is where I ended up getting my wetsuit from. I went in the store and filled out the online application and rented the suit for a week. I understood that if you kept it over the week, you pay an additional $5. No biggie, a week was plenty of time to practice with the suit and then do the tri on Saturday. I didn't get home until after the store had closed, but I couldn't return the suit Sunday (they are closed) or Monday (Oh, they are closed then too!). I called today to ask their policy on this sutation, since I coudln't return it to a closed store. They said I still have to pay. I asked why they didn't explain that to me when I rented it, and they said it is not their policy to explain the rental agreement to the customer. It's up to the customer to read the fine print. I realize it's my fault for not reading it carefully, but I still think that's jacked up that they don't tell you upfront like a decent salesperson should. I'm more peeved at the way the employee handled the telephone call, and totally discouraged from dealing with them in the future. I need a tri bike, a wetsuit, and probably plenty of other gear in the next 3 months. I will not be buying any of it from Bonzai. |

The irony is that the $5.00 is not what set you off but the lack of customer service/tone of employee. Customer service is the one thing you expect from a LBS - and what differentiates them from Performance Bike or a web-based store like All3sports.com (where products can be significantly cheaper than at the LBS). Consider it a lesson learned, relatively cheaply! |

Member 41![]() Arlington, VA | Subject: RE: Bonzai lost my businessI had a not so good experience with them as well. I bought a Felt Z35 road bike from them and the guy in there treated me as if it was no big deal. I was going to buy either a new Felt B12 or cervelo p2c from them but I might wait and purchase it from another store. It's a shame because they are really the only tri specific store in the area and they carry Felt and Cervelo. I know Conte's carries cervelo but not felt. Another person on my tri team said the same thing about their customer service. He bought a P2C and they could have cared less if he bought the bike. |

Veteran 202![]() ![]() Arlington, VA | Subject: RE: Bonzai lost my businessTheir service runs hot and cold, depending on who helps you. I've had kids who didn't know anything about tri, then had other employees who were great. I think the mixed service really hurts their business. At the same time, they are the only true tri store I know of in the Northern VA area. I've also had very mixed experiences at Conte's and Revolution, so I'm not sure there's a consistently great place anywhere nearby. |

Member 36![]() Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Bonzai lost my businessIf enough people started telling management that some of their reps are either crappy, have bad attitudes or just all around dis-interested in actually doing their jobs, management would fix the issue. I hear a good way to do this is to tell them the problem and then stop buying from them (if it continues, of course). Bonzai obviously has a good rep in general, but it's a couple bad apples that are spoiling the barrel. I worked at a hardware store where, it didn't matter what the customer said, I was told to smile and help them anyways... and this included them swearing at me and throwing things in one instance (long story). The moral is that, in less than 20 years, this store is actually competing for business with companies like Lowes and Home Depot. I've had customers that have driven 150 miles just to by door knobs from them. Bizarre, but true.

Master 3546![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Millersville, MD | Subject: RE: Bonzai lost my businessI feel your pain. I've also experienced the "don't give a damn" attitude there before. I walked in and said sell me a bike, and they wouldn't give me the time of day. I got a fit through their rep at Principle Fitness, and now I have a $200 credit to be used towards a bike purchase, and there's a very good chance I'm going to eat it and buy from somewhere else. I was looking for a relationship, but they were looking for a lunch break. I wanted someone to help me choose between the differing models, but suffice it to say I was able to learn far more myself in a few hours on the internet than anyone cared to tell me in the store. I couldn't help but think it was because I didn't fit the profile of a real triathlete - 220 pounds of anti-aero and I was given a brochure to look through. What I really wanted was someone to say "here's my expert opinion based on x and y and z for you lets get you on a bike (oh you want to swap that out, no problem) and see how it feels" I've been pleased that there are more and more FIST certified fitters are local shops springing up. |

That sucks - I rented a suit there last year, and they actually did tell me to make sure I returned it on a day they were open. It's just hard since most races are on Sat/Sun, so depending on when you rent it, you may have to pay extra since the store isn't open.

I know Big Wheel Bikes has Orbea's and a few others, can't remebmer off the top of my head. I have found you pretty much have to hit each store because they all seem to have better deals and selection on certain items. Conte's pretty much only deals in the high end market for bikes, clothes and pretty much everthing else in the store. When I have gone to Bonzai I have gotten mixed service, sometimes the people have been extremely helpful, other times I get the dull zombie stare... |

Extreme Veteran 370![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Bonzai lost my businessI'll echo other sentiments...I've used them for wetsuit rentals and had little to no problems. I'll definitely go back to them if I need to and I'll definitely consider them when I decide to pick up a tri bike this off season. Also, the customer service discussion that has ensued reminded me of my bike purchase earlier this year. I went online and on BT to research options...you know how that works, do I get a tri bike or road bike? Which one's should I ride? Do I got to an LBS or order online? Etc. Well, after a few weeks of research I decided to spend a rainy early Spring Saturday hitting up three local shops I'd heard good things about. The first was great...I went in and the owner was manning the register so he spent 20-25 minutes chatting with me and ultimately recommended I get a road bike and showed me a few models. he showed me a few other options in some catalogs and was a nice guy. However, he was also really technical in his description of the bikes most of which went right over my head. The second shop was a different story. I got there shortly after they opened so although there were several people working it was obvious they weren't quite in gear yet. I finally get someone to pay attention to me after a few minutes and start with my intro..."I'm considering a road or tri bike, this is my first season doing tri's and here is the budget I'd like to stick to...watcha got?" He almost immediately says flatly that I not even consider a tri bike until l I've got at least one season under my belt (fine answer but his tone inferred a lot more than he said). So, he shows me a bike or two...says, let me get you some catalogs and basically thanks for coming in. No offer to take a ride, no more questions about what I prefer and what I'd like to get out the purchase...nothing about fitting, etc. Basically, here is what we have...thanks for coming in. Discouraged, I left and decided I'd hit one more shop. I go to the shop with my tail a little between my legs. Walk in and am almost immediately greeted with a smile and an offer to help. After talking a bit...the guy I was chatting with calls over one the owners, shows me several road bikes and tri bikes and pulls down a '07 B75 for me to ride on a trainer (it was raining pretty hard outside). I liked it so he pulled down an '08 F85 and another bike that I can't remember. Him and the owner must have spent 30 to 40 minutes with me on the trainer chatting about the bikes, whether the size fit me well, encouraging me to toy around with it, etc. I left with some info, some pricing and walked right back in the next day to buy the B75 and all the gear I needed. All because they were helpful, willing to take the time and put in the extra effort that made me feel like I was a valued client. FYI, I still go there for most gear that I need quickly...I take my bike there and the first place I went to for maintenance (one place is much more convenient geographically) and I haven't stepped foot in the second place and have no plans to do so anytime soon. Customer service always matters...every second of the day. If it didn't we'd all buy online and say screw the LBS's. Sorry for the long post and slight hijack. Just thought it was a related story. --Chris |

I am one that if you mess up you pay, just saying. I don't think it is their responsibility when they rent to you to explain the store hours. If they said one week ending on Sunday and they closed at 5pm and you brought it at 6pm and then on Monday there were closed you owe the $5. |

When (unfortunately) he didn't have my shoe size in stock, he didn't try to push another brand on me.
