Overall Rank = 85/277
Age Group = F 30-34
Age Group Rank = 5/21
Pre-race routine:

Woke up late, ran out the door, stopped at store for coffee. Enjoyed the drive and cranked the tunes...
Met Sue and Christine and my friend Alyce.
Event warmup:

Walked to swim start and pondered the crazy waves.
Swim
  • 13m 48s
  • 800 meters
  • 01m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

Wow, I just get worse and worse with the swim - definetely mental at this point. The waves were so big that they let us start at the first bouy, past the break line, so it ended up being a wading start. Used my swedes today. They leaked a bit but were mostly good. Time includes the long run to transition.
Transition 1
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

I was just itching to get on my bike and do the fun part.
Bike
  • 28m 51s
  • 10.4 miles
  • 21.63 mile/hr
Comments:

Look at that!! This is my first 21mph+ average in a race!! Yeehaw! My bike computer AND my HRM were both not working today, so I had no data to follow. Just went out there and rode. I realized how badly I had done in the swim when I just kept passing and passing girls in my AG - tons of them. Got 2nd in AG here..
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Run
  • 26m 55s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, I just cannot run in sand. My first mile was about 8:47, by second mile I was 19:xx, the last 1.1 miles I went a LOT faster, sand was gone. Felt pretty good throughout. Obviously not a top quality run for me, but the sand just messes everything up. I am very happy with 5th in AG...my run has seen big improvements this season.
What would you do differently?:

Kill myself more in that last mile. I got passed with about 1/2 mile to go...I hate that.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with the BTers, drove home, stopped for coffee on the way (Dunkin Donuts, yeah!!).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being a big dork with the swim.

Event comments:

Some of you know that I was hoping to beat my spinning instructor today. Didn't happen, but it was close! She got 2nd in our AG, and she beat me by 54 seconds!! Last race, a few weeks ago, she beat me by over 2 minutes. Next time I will get her. She sent me a nice email just now congratulating me and telling me she was getting scared..
I did get an award, since it went 5 deep, but I don't want an award for 5th place. It says runner-up on it. Blech. I have been just outside the top 3 in AG for a few races now and it is getting really old. I MUST PLACE by the end of this season - just once!!
Look in my album to see my cute shirt I wore today!!

Jessica- very nice performance today...for some reason I thought you were a part of the relay that Sue was doing...anyways, I can't believe you guys had to run on the sand....argggh! I have a sand run in my tri next weekend. Any tips??
But, hey a 21 mph on the bike is freaking awesome. You should be so happy. Maybe not having the bike computer helped, lol. Anyways, enjoy resting the rest of today. Cute shirt!

Bang up job. Way to gut out the sand. I don't mind salt water swims but running on soft sand is just miserable.

Well Sand Key was my first tri and it was really fun. My times sucked but now I knwo what to expect and can work on getting all of my times down. But overall I could not have had a better expierence. Jess was right. There were some good size waves. I probobly drank a half gallon of salt water, and all of the training I had done for the swimming went down the drain. My form was horrible. Bike ride went ok but since I was in the last wave there weren't many other people around me when I was riding so I think I had trouble pacing myself. The run went alright other than the sand, was not expecting that. But other than my time I was happy. I wanted to do the race without stopping the entire time and I did that. Now just got to work on the times. oh yeah, it was great to meet the other BTers there.

You had a great race.  It's tough running in sand...you gotta assume times will be a bit slower than usual.  (even WITH the sand, your time was still good)  Incredible bike!  Keep it up!
