Expert 945 , Michigan | Subject: Aero Nutrition Question Where do BT'ers keep their non-liquid nutrition for HIM and IM races? At Steelhead this past weekend I saw for the first time people sticking Shot Blocks and what looked like Cliff Bars directly to their top tube, where people sometimes tape gels. The Shot Blocks and Cliff Bars were opened, out of their packaging, and just stuck to the frame? |

Extreme Veteran 680 Acworth, GA | Subject: RE: Aero Nutrition Question Sounds like an interesting technique but a little extreme. I always "precut" the wrappers before I tape anything down but that is just for ease of opening later. Opening Cliff bars or blocks can be a hassle when tired, especially when you "tear here" and it doesn't quite work out. |

Extreme Veteran 863 West Michigan | Subject: RE: Aero Nutrition Question I said other. I rubber band mine to my PD aerodrink bracket. Simple and quick. My Bento box is filled with my spare tube, Co2, etc. I do have another box I could attach to top tube and seat post. That is for Olympic and above. |

Subject: RE: Aero Nutrition Question I selected other. My nutrition goes in flasks. Which may be kept in my bento box or my jersey pocket. |

Master 1437 Calgary, AB | Subject: RE: Aero Nutrition Question I have 2 flasks, 1 in the bento just for storage and one in a flask holder on the stem which I use every 30. Then 2 packs of cliff blocks cut in half (so 3 per "pack").

Only think I can think of is that tri tops/jerseys typically have MUCH smaller pockets than cycling jerseys (and usually only one pocket as opposed to three) or they are in weird locations like on the side instead of in the back. |

Master 1437 Calgary, AB | Subject: RE: Aero Nutrition Question I hate having large things on my back - especially water bottles. But yah my flask problem is because the shirt I'm planning on wearing (the desoto long sleeve cooler) has only 1 center reachable pocket. With my bike jersey on training ride I have "backup" stuff like an extra bottle, tube, arm warmers, cellphone, etc in the pockets.

They are small and because unless you are going to swim with all your nutrition, you need to be loading up your pockets in T1 and that's just a waste of time. For long course races I use a Fuel Box to carry about 6 gels in packets if it's cold or a gel flask if it's warm, and maybe a few bites of a Cliff Bar. For an IM, I have 2 Cliff Bars in there. My hydration needs all are course provided and i have two bottle, one on the seat tube and one between the aero bars. Edited by bryancd 2011-08-18 12:38 PM |

Champion 9600 Fountain Hills, AZ | Subject: RE: Aero Nutrition Question To be honest, I have never understood the tape method. I can see how it's a reminder to eat them and if your really tape them down they can tear open as you pull them, but you can't just drop the package, that's a rule violation, so you need to put the empty packs in your pocket. Why not just have a Bento type box where you can keep them and store your trash? |

Expert 945 , Michigan | Subject: RE: Aero Nutrition Question I saw a number of the pros at Steelhead slip a gel flask into their jersey pocket just before the bike start. They originally had them taped to their top tube. I assume they would have made the switch after their first swig if the race hadn't been a DU. I had a bento box with the gels at Steelhead and think I'm gonna try the taped to top tube method for my next HIM. Maybe I'll try the flask. Who knows. There's always something to think about. FWIW, I think it's easier to put empty gel packs in your pocket than back in your bento. |

What issue did you have with the Bento box? Do you think it's not aero efficient for somereason and is slowing you down, because it's not. |

I don't know about Cliff Bars but lick and stick works for shot blocks quite well though I've never done it in a race. Only tried it to see how it worked. First time I saw this being done was at an Xterra race (mountain biking). Either bento box or taped to top tube for me, depending on distance. |

Expert 945 , Michigan | Subject: RE: Aero Nutrition Question I had 4 gels and a Cliff bar in the box. By the end of the ride, it was like a trash can. It was all I could do to get the 4th gel out while not dropping trash and risking penalty. I ended up taking the empty packets out one by one and putting them in my rear trisuit pocket. When I got to the last full gel, it was so nice not to have to fuss with the trash. Plus, the extra step of taking the piece of gel packet out of your mouth after you bite it off was annoying. The tape method eliminates that. |

I use one of these and it fits everything no problem without all that fuss. http://www.sportsbasement.com/istar.asp?a=6&id=AEROBOX!Fuel |

To OP, tape gel to frame for Sprint and Oly. Strategic tape placement and it comes right off as gel tops are meant to tear easily. Used wrapper is now flat and is tucked into pant leg. I'd lose the top part half the time. Longer course and I use Bento box. Water is downtube or between aerobars for short-course, both for long-course. I'm limiting to half IM for the foreseeable future, and that's enough for me to make it. |

Veteran 820 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Aero Nutrition Question This is slightly off topic, but realavent to the topic, are you allowed to dispose of trash at bottle drop locations? Like a few others I have my spare tire etc in my bento box, though it's not really a bento box, rather an under the seat bag that doesn't fit under my seat because of the seatpost, so I put it up front like a bento. I have my first HIM this weekend. I will be taping four gels to the top tube, the tear off method has worked for me in the past, and the trash would normally got in the leg of my tri shorts. In the past it has only been one wrapper so no big deal. I was thinking the bottle drop locations may also be for trash, if not I'll have to rethink that part, don't want four of them in my shorts. Back when I first got into tri in the 90 we stuck powerbars to our top tubes, in some cases they stuck a little too well. |

16 | Subject: RE: Aero Nutrition Question I drink Infinit for the whole race, nothing else. No gels, no solids, no tablets. Never carry more than two bottles. I start the bike with one normal concentrated bottle in my horizontal bottle on the aero bars and one super concentrated bottle on the downtube. No bento box, no parachute bottle behind my seat. For the first part of the ride I just drink the normal bottle. At the first aid station I toss that empty bottle and take a water hand up. For the rest of the ride I sip from the concentrated bottle at a pace to empty it by T2 and I chase each sip with water from the aero bar bottle. I take new water hand up at each aid station. I try to pace the drinking so I'm taking more calories at the beginning of the bike and less toward the end. Then for the run I drink whatever's offered on course. If it's an oly or sprint I only carry the one normal bottle on the bars. Nothing else is needed. If you mix the drink up right you can get just as many calories from it without ever having to mess with gels and bars, which never sound appetizing 3 hours into a race on a hot day. Even before I switched to Infinit I used the same method with EFS, accelerade, or whatever you like mixed with Carbo Pro. Ps... Why is it that no matter how many times I press return my posts still show up as one long paragraph. I swear I didn't type it this way! Edited by ComidaDeluxe 2011-08-18 2:04 PM |
