soooooooooo ok, i would hafta say that sushi is prolly one of, if not my most favorite food around.  now ive heard that it is one of the most healthiest things that one could eat.  i was wondering if anyone knew the real scoop on sushi, is it good or bad for me and in how much moderation???

My father started a sushi restaurant about 6 months before I was born. He owned it until 2 years ago when he sold it to a family friend.

That said, I have eaten sushi at least once a week since I was about 5 years old. I worked at the restaurant for 4 years, during which time I ate it nearly everyday. I've never had any major health problems.

I thought this was such a great question that I did a Google and got just some quick numbers for my favorite items when we go to sushi.

Tuna Nigiri (one piece with white rice) = 60 cal. , 4g protein
Salmon Nigiri (one piece with white rice) = 68 cal , 5g protein
Rolls (with typical wrapping and white rice) = 370-550 cal (highest being the tempura rolls)

So I think eating any of this while I'm in training is better than I used to eat. Plus there are ways to cut down the numbers even more (brown rice or cucumber wrapped rolls).

If you want to cut down the calories even more, add in some sashimi to the mix.  My 3yo goes crazy over salmon sashimi.  He tries to order it at every restaurant we go to.

Tempura is deep-fried - of course, it's bad for you

I love big hunks of raw tuna. No rice necessary. Just the slices of fish. On a plate. All for me

I love sushi - eat it all the time.  Great for you unless you are pregnant.  I avoid the tempura and stick to nigiri or hand rolls...

wife and i went and got some carry-out yesterday for college football day.   figured that was alot more healthier than burgers, bbq, or pizza.

i snuck in a couple beers too since the sushi is heathly.   i always go for sushi when i want something that "feels" like a cheat meal but it's really not.

love me some sushi

I believe that raw fish, like raw meat, is a natural source for creatine, which I understand can be benificial shortly after a workout. I think.

Is it true that raw fish brings about a "buzz" sensation? I do feel like I am much more comfortably satisfied.

I like the sushi 'cause it's never touched a frying pan.......

It's a terrific recovery meal and when you choose your pieces responsibly - is great for adding protien and carbs without a ton of bad calories.  Be careful of rolls, as they will often have a mayonaise based sauce that will add some fat (not all bad).

I agree-- sushi is generally quite healthy but only in moderation.

It offers the heart-healthy omegas and nice clean, unadulterated protein.  White rice is, of course, an empty carb but you can find brown rice sushi (though not for the sushi purist) and you also can opt for sashimi or things like tataki or naruto to skip the rice completely.

Seaweed and kelp also offer immense nutritional benefit from its great vitamin and trace mineral content.  Good for immune system, thyroid, blood sugar, arthritis, antioxidant protection...

But as I said, everything in moderation.  High fish consumption is linked to heavy metals and white rice offers little nutritional benefit, empty calories, simple sugary carbs.

 ...but I still LOVE it!!!

Sushi is great! But now that I'm a vegetarian, I only get to enjoy those available options that cater to my diet. Point obvious question - I'm assuming vegetarian sushis have less protein than regular seafood sushi right?

I LOOOOVE eating sushi.

I feel very fortunate that sushi is my "feel guilty" food.  When I am hungry, and want something delisious to satisfy me...I turn to sushi.  I know many people aren't this lucky...others turn to Enchilladas, Burgers, Pizza, etc, etc.  So, I feel quite fortunate to have a food love affair with something so (relatively) healthy as sushi.

My only downfall to Sushi, is I tend to like the rolls with Cream Cheese in them.  Luckily, I don't care for the Tempura ones.

Calorie count is a lot higher per piece than I thought. I have to be careful.

Yeah, would not be tasty. However, I have a little fantasy about going for all you can eat sushi after a long run or bike, man...protein, carbs.....it would be awesome, one of these days.

One great thing about triathlon training is that you burn so many calories, you can binge a little. If I have to go an extra 40 miles on the bike for tempura sushi...bring it on!
