Holy cow! Yeah, I'm using exclamation points a lot about this.

18 knots gusting to 25. I felt like I was peddling my butt off and going backwards.

I'm used to taking wind into account from flying but this is something entirely different. I'm ready for a nap now and that was only 50 minutes of biking.

This winter, Spinervals every bike ride. This year was just time, get a base.

Don't mind it much on hard rides.

I LOVE riding in the wind. It's a wonderful opportunity to become better at getting into the tightest possible aero position on my bike. Feel the wind, and make it your friend, and it will pay on race day.

Edit: I don't know how knots compares to mph. So, maybe the wind you were in today was more than I have ever ridden in! I've ridden in 20 mph / gusts up to 30 mph.

Consider it wind training.  If you do enough tri's, you will inveitably have some windy races.

Just about the same...  Only 15% difference.

I have been out in 25-25 with 45 gusts.  One almost blew me into traffic which was a little unsettling...  The desert leaves you exposed and wind whips through some of the washes pretty good.

Considering probably half of my races end up being in flatter/windier conditions I just suck it up and get used to it.

Biggest problem with being fast in the wind though in races???  Wheelsuckers .........

Oh I know I gotta and I know it's good for me. Doesn't mean I gotta like it, just means I've got to do more of it

Sorry, I'm a pilot, I think in knots. Below about 50, they're close enough to not pay much attention to which it's in.
Seems a headwind will hurt you more than a tail wind will help you on the bike too. Interesting.

Another interesting thing is trying to figure out how the heck I had a headwind for 3/4 of the ride and it's a loop. Not a quartering headwind, a full headwind. THAT was messed up.

If you're out there riding in it and hating it, you'll be all tense and waste energy in your tension. If you're out there telling yourself you love it, you'll relax and you'll do better. So, play mind games with yourself. Next time it's windy, think "Yay, it's windy, I'll pretend I'm in a wind tunnel." It really works.

I need to learn how to do this in running!

See the dude sitting about 5 feet behind me??  Blatantly drafting?

He was there for about a 1/2 hour.

A "wheelsucker" is someone who rides in your draft and never does a lick of work.  It is a road racing term and applies to many.  But considering this race was not draft legal this pr-ck was simply breaking the rules for personal gain.

I feel what it's doing to me and work on making as little of me feel the wind as is humanly possible, then shift and see if I can find a position that less of me feels the wind.

Running, I just black out and come to when it's time to have to make a decision. I've done that for over 20 years now and learned it well in the Army

The wind is my training partner.

But remember the wind givith and the wind taketh away,
but she never giveth back as much as she taketh away.

When it's big though, do be careful especially of traffic and other riders in your vicinity.  - Don't want to get run over just being tough.  We had one day this spring when the wind was gusting to 40 and we just stayed in the neighborhoods rather than hitting the open road.  Better safe than leaving skin on the pavement.

In Dallas for pretty much most of the year I had to ride in wind that was 15-25 mph. It sucked. Or it blew. Whichever. HA!

One day we did a 50 mile ride in wind that had gusts up to 40 mph. I will never do that again. There was a section where the wind was whipping around a high rise and 4 of us got blown off our bikes. We all ended up on the ground. Learned my lesson.

I only ride in wind up to 30 mph now. Anything over that and I'm on the trainer.

ipull400watts - 2008-10-21 11:43 PM  I hope you dropped that a hole.

The irony of it all ......... I was the one who got a yellow card for crossing over the yellow line for a 1/2 second when I got pushed over by someone I was passing who tried to pass another at the same time and swerved to the left.  So I had to go over to avoid an accident.  I passed this dude (who was in a small pack that couldn't follow me) after that and he latched on.

This was a windy section of the course but there was not a penalty box so I had to keep riding on.  when I finally found a penalty tent and pulled over to serve my bogus yellow card he had to keep going obviously into the wind alone.  I did my "stop and go" and caught him about 3 miles later.  I absolutely blew his frickin' doors off so he couldn't latch back on and gave him the "Draft this!" as I road by.  He never caught back up.

My nemsis is the cross wind. If the wind is from the north or south it will be directly across my bike for 95 percent of my East/West ride. That means no break or tailwind as compensation. The other day I did 70 miles and had a tailwind for um maybe 4 miles of it, the rest was cross or straight into it (25 mph wind). It doesn't tense me up per sey, but it does take energy adjusting to being blown into the road or towards the gravel depending on direction. I typically have a 10 to 25 mph wind for 90 percent of my rides. What took the wind out of my sails so to speak on my HIM however was endless hills. The next challenge.

Oh btw what is this penalty box you speak of. I had neaver heard of that how does it work (other than what you said). How do you know you have a yellow card or need to seak out a penalty box and how long do you have to stay in one etc. Teach me oh wise one.

Yeah but how often do you ride in the wind?  I don't mind it when it's every once in a while, but this spring it was 25-35 mph almost everyday for 3 months. It really wears on you mentally when you know you have to train, but it makes you sick thinking about going out in the wind again.
